Is it possible to use VCDS to change my B5 S4 to Long Life Service intervals?

Hi,

I am based in the UK and have a B5 Audi S4 Avant 2.7L. The service interval set up on my car has to the best of my knowledge never been changed since I have had the car. I bought it when it was 3 years old.

I would prefer to be on "Long Life" service intervals. I am assuming that I am not already.

I am not really sure what servicing my car is set to at the moment, but the 365 days and min/max hours in the screenshot below would seem to indicate that I am possibly on some kind of hybrid of annual servicing.

I don't understand why the min miles to service is higher that the max miles to service. Does this make sense?

My car service manual states that there are two types of service intervals:-
Standard Servicing = 12 months or 10,000m
Long Life Servicing = 24 months or sooner according to driving style.

For Long Life servicing one has to use VW 503 01 spec oil. I am using VW 504.00 spec which supercedes VW 503 01.
The oil quality according to VCDS is currently set at 1. I am not sure if this is correct?

The following link gives an example of typical servicing options:-
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/SRI_Reset_Procedure
I only have one option in the drop down menu on this screen and that is for a General Service Reset.

Just in case required, I have also attached the latest auto scan:-

For Longlife on this car, I think you'd need to set the following:

45: 2
44: 730
43: 30
42: 15

But personally, I think it would be a mistake to go more than 10,000 miles or one year between oil changes, no matter the "quality" of the oil. In fact, in a car that I liked and intended to keep, I like to have the oil changed around 7500 miles.

Actually while talking to heavy machinery guys, the longlife doesn't necessarily depend all on oil. It depends on the oil filter capacity. A 0.5l oilfilter vs. 3-4 liter can and will make a difference. Also there are 2 in some trucks.

About the oil change frequency, i remember reading a article about when changing the oil too frequent. The additives in oil which help to neutralize the remains of old oil can harm the engine internals when there isn't any old oil to neutralize. My oil change is 9.3k miles/15k km.

My 2 cents.

Thanks!

If I did leave the settings as they are, I am not clear as to how the switch is made between Standard (fixed) servicing and Long Life (variable) servicing. I note that my maximum mileage setting (9,000m) is lower that my minimum mileage setting (19,000m). I suspect that these settings would have been made by an authorised Audi dealer when the car was fairly new. Could it be that this is to force selection of the maximum mileage setting - for Standard (fixed) servicing or is it likely to be an error? Could it be that the Long Life (variable) servicing is initiated by selecting oil quality 2 instead of 1?

Can I ask why you feel the need for the long life servicing schedule??

I am considering options as per the service manual after just completing a service and I am using VW 504 00 spec oil which I understand is compatible with the Long Life service option.

I was told by the main Audi Dealer who I purchased the car from many years ago that it was on Long Life servicing, but now that I have VCDS I can see that it is not.

I may well leave it as is, but am still curious as to how things work and why my min max mileage settings are set as they are with the min higher than the max.

On that cluster, I believe it is primarily the Oil Quality channel that determines whether you're on Standard/Fixed or Long-Life/Flexible. However, the other channels should be adjusted to corresponding sensible values.

I note that my maximum mileage setting (9,000m) is lower that my minimum mileage setting (19,000m).
Yeah, that part doesn't make much sense to me.

:) Thanks - I'm glad it's not just me who is looking at my mileage service settings and questioning the logic - though perhaps there is some to someone! Well at least I am confident now that I am definitely not on Long Life servicing and I now have a much better idea of what to do if I want to go there.

Hi Klaus, yes the reason I was asking is because at that time the car was built, I don't think they actually had the option of the QG1, I worked for VW at that time and the earliest I remember the mention of "longlife" would have been around 2002.
Unfortunately there are some plebs employed in main dealers who haven't a clue about the function of such intervals. I remember one time sending a friend into a dealership for a service and Haldex service, came out with a bill for a normal service..... I queried the Haldex issue to then be told yes sure it's ticked in the service book..... they then pointed at the cabin filter tick box!!!! If the technicians can't comprehend what a Haldex unit is, what makes you think they understand the difference between QG0 and QG1 PR codes. Lol

I have no connections to vehicle maintenance, but I do see your point. The Haldex story is scary. However, it may be that VAG LL servicing did in fact begin as early as 1999 as that is the date on the back page of the pdf document I posted a link to in my last message. However, there is no mention of an S4 in that document. My car was built in 1999 and first registered in 2000. On reflection LL servicing is probably not a good idea for an S4 driven enthusiastically - even if it was an option.
