Hello,

This is my first post here so please forgive me if I don't follow the rules correctly. I have a 2006 Audi A4 B7 Quattro with a 2.0T and 6 speed automatic transmission. Here is my vehicle scan and also the PLB file for the Control Module Maps of the Automatic Transmission. My problem is the following:

The car shifts perfectly fine everywhere else except for when it down shifts from 3rd to 2nd at low speeds during braking. When the car is cold, it shifts smoothly, but once the car is warmed up it starts to shift rough from 3rd to 2nd, its becoming quite unbearable and I am afraid I am damaging the transmission. During this transition, the car shudders and I can hear the transmission clunking. Its almost as if the transmission is having a hard time shifting from 3rd to 2nd. This rough downshift does not happen in sport mode. I have already performed a transmission fluid change with ZF Lifegaurd 8 twice! Also changed the transmission filter, but shifting is still an issue. I have also performed a Throttle Body and Kickdown adaptation but it still did not help :banghead:. Now I am thinking I might have to reset the transmission to the factory settings and then do an adaptation drive. But I am not too familiar with this procedure. Can someone please tell me if this is the right thing to do next? If so, then what is the procedure for resetting the transmission in VAG COM? Also once the reset has occurred, how exactly do I perform the adaptation drive?

You could try slightly thicker fluid, to raise the PSI during shift points........for wear.

I was thinking about doing that next if the transmission reset didn't help. Were you thinking adding Lucas products to the existing fluid? Or flushing out? What thicker fluid is compatible with this transmission?

Have you seen a procedure for that that applies to your transmission? I haven't, and I don't think such a procedure exists, because what you have there is a totally conventional automatic transmission, not a CVT, and not a DSG.

Ah yes, an "Adaptation Drive" which does not involve a scan tool. :D

Based on that TSB, I suppose you should have your transmission updated to software level 0090 as well.

Thanks for posting the map and scan per our phone conversation yesterday. Based on what I see in MVB 070+ I do not believe the 09L Adaptation function procedure is going to work. Per my research previously the factory scan tool in addition to RoW market TSBs described this as a phase-in period during MY 2006. I was not aware of 37-06-13 for the NAR market 09L so this adds a great deal of clarity to the actual SWL (software Level).

Having that flash completed per Uwe's suggestion would be my next move.

In the meanwhile I need to make sure my MVB and Adp channel values (from memory) are correct and I'll post the details if you'd like to try with the current SWL.

OK, I was close on the MVBs. Groups 073 through 077 apply but your module skipped from 070 to 125 as if they aren't supported. Please double check the next time you are connected to the car but that should confirm the reset won't work.

Next, the Adaptation channel was group 001. The original value would be 0 when applicable (rather than error which is what I'd expect pre-flash) and you save the new value of 0 into that channel. After doing so any learned MVB 073 - 077 data would be zeroed and the test drive needs to be completed.

If you have that flash update completed I would like to take a look at another control module map!

Hi Dana, thank you so much for your very thorough explanation! You were unbelievably helpful over the phone, wayyyyyy more than the gentleman I spoke with over the phone yesterday...

You are correct, I don't believe my car's transmission module supports the adaptations. When I go into adaptation channels 73 - 77, I only see ERROR and NOT AVAILABLE. I am hesitant to get the software updated because that would require me to go to the dealership and also will require a complete transmission flush with a fluid that has since been superseded. Not to mention they will charge me an arm and a leg to perform the work. If I had not invested in the VAG COM, the dealership route would have been more affordable. I guess my next step, as suggested by Jack@European_Parts, is to try a thicker transmission fluid. I have noticed that when I come to a stop under harder braking, the transmission shift very smooth from 3rd to 2nd. So Jack@European_Parts thought seems to make sense, maybe I need thicker fluid to increase the pressure during low speed down shifting.

Thanks for the input Jack@European_Parts! Since Dana and Uwe have suggested that a Factory Reset won't be possible on the Transmission's adaptation values without a software upgrade, my next option is to try either an additive or a thicker transmission fluid. I searched on google for a Nazi STP additive but I am not getting anything. Is that the exact name? My only remaining question is that will the Nazi STP OK to mix with the Lifegard 8 trans fluid I already have in the transmission?

I don't remember if those modules support Adaptation Channel 0... If so, it's probably worth a try?

Oh LOL I think I get it now haha. Nazi STP = German STP?!

I was able to go in and perform a SAVE in channel 00 for the transmission, but I'm not sure if it did anything because the adaptation channels don't show any information. I will try it again tonight.

Yes ZF Lifegard 8 is the correct fluid according to the dealership and Europaparts. Also when I took the old fluid out, it was the same greenish color as the ZF Lifegard 8.

The proper coding is 0000002 but I'd try 0000001 All-Wheel-Drive (Rest of World) followed by a key cycle and changing it directly back to the proper value. If RoW coding is outright refused just re-code it to the same value with different Importer and Equipment numbers so you can see if these actually changed from zeros:

Shop #: WSC 06314 000 00000

Worst case, your TCM is still coded properly and the shifting concern isn't fixed IMO.

Yes it does, but from my understanding even the blue fluid was later superseded by the green fluid.

Well STP will never admit to the Nazi's making this, however, if you go deep into FAA log data, and aviation/military history........ you can find that it is true.


Real STP has the ability to be mixed with ATF and pretty much all oils.

Hydraulic fluids all do about the same thing but sometimes differently.

Some just do it at different specifications or blends to be with within a threshold or chemical mix.

The fact this car shifts fine cold says that while stuff is tight and PSI is higher due to being thicker...... says it will help.

Most of the time it does when you have a trans that has no issues but a slight mechanical wear problem as this.

The VB could also be modified to change the flow and some support regulation adjustment.

Since it is not feasible to make these adjustments in the VB typically you can experiment with fluid thickness.

Sometimes I thin stuff out and in a case like this I thicken it up.

I have run transmissions on straight SAE 30 weight motor oil with excellent success in race cars.
Doesn't shift cold very well initially though.......so a waiting period.

I have had great success with 0w40 Mobil one in an auto-trans.........thin cold and thickens hot.

Heavy Duty Tractor hydraulic oils work very well, and can be bought like 5 gallons at 40 bucks..........


I would tell Audi and VW to shove all their oils up their ass..........
The mythical time bomb which has only proven to me that the engines or transmissions fail with their oils on a routine anyway.
