I was driving it with the heater and aircon off,
But you were not, and could not have been, driving it with the Auto Transmission "OFF"

That too can influence Fan behaviour.

Once again !
You do NEED to look at that Coolant Temp Sensor and confirm that it is accurate. It should read more than 72 *C when the engine is warm.

Engine will not be asking fans to the party at those temps.

Hi all. Thanks for all the great advice.

Had the car over on the weekend and got a couple of runs with the log going to compare it against that healthy graph from @SaVAGeSoot. That was really helpful.

Temperatures looked pretty tragic. We'll get that looked into first before chasing other issues.

Are you sure your coolant system isn't compromised? Why is the rad output temp reaching 70ºC like that out of the blue? That screams air pocket to me!

That a good point.

She'd had the car serviced not that long ago and I wasn't too impressed with their work (e.g., the oil level was over-filled. I had to take about 400ml out to get it back down to the 'full' mark). So if they did the coolant, they may have just drained and gravity filled.

I've got a vacuum coolant filler. She'll have the car back over on the weekend so I'll give that a try.

One problem with the RHD Touareg is the OBDII port is right in front of the accelerator pedal and the Hex-V2 is easily dislodged if not careful, which is what happened during the run. I'd say the reason the radiator output temp spiked at the start of the 2nd graph was due to having to restart the scan with the engine already hot. I had to park and set it all up again.

What about after the 500s mark?

As it was at the end of the drive, the 500 spike would most likely be while waiting in traffic to turn into my home road and the 600 spike will be from while I'm parking before stopping the test.

If I keep playing with this car, I'll definitely have to look into that right-angle adapter.

Thanks all for the good pointers and advice.
Unfortunately I couldn’t get around to bleeding the cooling system last weekend, so my daughter is getting her mechanic to check it next week to see if it solves the coolant temps before chasing other causes.

I read about the IDE08087 ‘Test - Bleed cooling circuit’ command but this car doesn’t have it listed in the Security Access or Basic Settings options.

It does have the IDE01550 ‘Service Position’ command to open the cooling system valves, so she’ll make sure that they know about this and the VW procedure for vacuum coolant filling/bleeding, or take it elsewhere.

Cheers.
