Hi, back after quite an absence (my old Audi A4 has been in storage following a failed annual inspection several years back), but now I have a VW Touareg to play with.
My daughter told me her 2016 3.0L V6 TDI Touareg (RHD in Australia) was occasionally making a strange irregular ‘ticking’ noise from the engine bay. I heard the noise and couldn’t pinpoint it with the stethoscope, but it sounded like coming from the driver’s upper right side of the engine (i.e., left if looking from the front). A mechanic friend suggested it might be injector related, so I searched the Ross-Tech forums and found some relevant tests to try. Went for a drive to warm the car up and the dashboard dial sat on 90deg C as normal and the fan kicked in. However, the VCDS was showing the Coolant temp only got to and stayed between 69-72deg C. Ambient was 25 C by the way. Kept driving around, but the VCDS reading stayed the same, so it looks like a separate issue could be temp sensor. Anyway, continued with the injector tests regardless, so hoping that someone can confirm if I’m going down the correct path or not. What I did was:

- Tried to do the fuel pressure test, even though the temp didn’t get up to the 80 C mandated in the Ross-Tech video. The Specified value is 250,000 hPa, with the actual reading in the ball park at idle (out of practice with VCDS so forgot to save the data but took photos instead).
Injector 3 appeared to be the outlier.- Following the steps in the video I turned the engine off/ign on and the actual value showed 2,500 hPa (a rather strange value I thought). Stayed at this value as the temp rose to 77 C and as the engine started to cool the reading then started flashing back and forth between 2,500 and zero hPa.
After reading a similar Touareg thread (https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/54999/#post-456606) I’ll get the #3 injector looked at regardless, but just wondering if someone knows of any other VCDS tests I could run to confirm?
