My 2015 GTI smog readiness from OBD2 scanner: 6 out of 9 ready, 3 not ready. Following are the not ready monitors:

Catalyst
Fuel
Oxygen

I have driven since reset about 30 miles, on highway and locals, still show stubbornly in OBD scanner as not ready, there us no code after scanning.

How long I should drive the car in terms of miles to get the above 3 monitors ready?

Thanks alot for your insight

Is the car chipped or stock? Any intermittent codes?

Thanks for the reply, there is no code.

ECU is stock ECU, never flashed after factory

Hi there,

How long I should drive the car in terms of miles to get the above 3 monitors ready?

As long as it takes... :p until Readiness sets or you get a fault code, by the way does this vehicle have a tune on the Engine controller? If so, you will want to talk to your tuner.

For this vehicle you will want to use the Basic Settings: IDE00553-Automatic test procedure

Here is the full procedure:

Automatic test sequence] - Readiness Tests of UDS Engine controllers

Prerequisites: All Electrical consumers off

Select [01-Engine]
- Check and clear fault codes, even if there are none.

Start engine
- Select [Basic settings] - IDE00553
[Automatic test procedure] or [Automatic test procedure]

Select the following [Show Measuring Data]:
IDE00450 [Operating Instructions] - (As is says, follow instructions)
IDE00451 [Currently running routine] - (Current test being performed)
IDE00030 [Status of actuator test] - (Current status)
IDE00727 [Test steps to be performed] - (This should count down to 0)
IDE00021 [Engine speed] - (Follow instructions, above)
IDE00025 [Coolant temperature] - (Should be at least 80'C)

- Press [Go] for the Basic Settings, [Automatic test sequence/procedure]
- Follow the 'Operating instructions', press and hold brake/accelerator pedal until the test has finished.

When the system has finished you should get the message "System OK" in the [Operating Instructions] field.

Hope this helps,

drpeter

VCDS shows it does not have tune since coming out of the factory.

Last successful flash attempt is in 2014
Successful flash attempt is 1/1/1/1

I have not attempted to perform "Automatic test sequence/procedure", which needs to press both brake and gas pedal all the way to the floor, a little scary:) Pressing gas pedal to the floor is like rpm would go through the roof:)

I think I just drive as long as it takes until ready

Thanks

I would take that with a grain of salt. There are tuners that have figured out how to reset the flash counters.

With the proper Basic Setting active, the ECU will control RPM to where it wants to have it for the test when you do that.

Thanks Drpeter, I have run the Automatic Test Procedure under Basic Setting and show these measuring data, worked great

Test completed:

VCDS readyness show all of 8 monitors ready:

vcds_ready.jpg

But OBD readyness still show Fuel monitor not ready:

obd_readyness.jpg

It is highly likely that fuel system monitor was never included in the VAG proprietory 8 bit readyness vector, so Automatic test procedure will not test Fuel system monitor.

Question:

Is there any way to set it ready without driving?

Thanks again for the great advice that made Catalyst and Oxgen monitors ready.

Why are you doing this in the generic OBD function instead of in address 01, readiness?

Why are you doing this in the generic OBD function instead of in address 01, readiness?
Because I need to have the car pass California Smog Test that all OBD monitors are required to be ready for passing.

By the way, here is response from AI:

California would check something outside of Volkswagen's own diagnostic readiness vector. However, the California smog test machine strictly operates under Federal SAE J1979 / Generic OBD-II standards, entirely ignoring VAG’s proprietary 8-bit readiness vector.

Why VAG Excluded Fuel From Its 8-Bit Vector

Volkswagen created that 8-bit readiness vector (often seen in VCDS or factory ODIS tools) for a very specific engineering reason: it tracks non-continuous active self-tests.

  • VAG 8-Bit Vector (CAT | CAT HEATER | EVAP | AIR | A/C | O2 | O2 HEATER | EGR):These are non-continuous systems. They require the ECU to intrusively command specific component sweeps (e.g., heating up an O2 sensor, cycling an EVAP purge valve, running a catalytic oxygen-storage check). Because a technician can force these routines while parked using VCDS, VW built an internal 8-bit byte to track their completion.
  • Fuel System & Misfire (Continuous Monitors):VW did not include the Fuel Monitor or Misfire Monitor in that 8-bit byte because they are passive, continuous calculations, not active intrusive tests. The ECU processes fuel trim math in the background 100% of the time whenever the engine is in Closed-Loop. Since there is no "test routine" to trigger, VW saw no reason to put it in their basic setting readiness byte.

How the California Smog Machine (BAR-OIS) Actually Inspects Your Car

By federal law, state inspection programs cannot use manufacturer-proprietary scan protocols because every car maker (VW, Ford, Toyota, BMW) structures their internal software differently.

Instead, the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) machine uses Generic OBD-II Mode 01 (PID $01), which is identical across all manufacturers:

  1. The Machine Queries Mode 01: When plugged into your 2015 GTI, the BAR machine asks the ECU: "Send me the status of all SAE J1979 supported readiness monitors since DTCs were cleared."
  2. The ECU Responds with Standard SAE Bits: Your VW ECU replies using standard OBD-II formatting, which explicitly includes:
    • Misfire Monitor: (Continuous)
    • Fuel System Monitor: (Continuous)
    • Comprehensive Component Monitor: (Continuous)
    • Catalyst Monitor: (Non-Continuous)
    • O2 Sensor Monitor: (Non-Continuous)
    • EVAP Monitor: (Non-Continuous)
  3. The Pass/Fail Logic Applies: The BAR machine reads the Fuel System Monitor bit directly from standard OBD-II PID $01. If it reads "Incomplete" or "Not Ready," the inspection machine will fail the readiness check before even starting the tailpipe/tamper test.

Summary

The BAR smog inspection machine does not know or care about VW's internal 8-bit readiness domain. It reads the standard Generic OBD-II Fuel System Monitor bit, which is mandated by the EPA and California Air Resources Board (CARB) for all 1996 and newer vehicles.

Here is my plan for the remaining Fuel system monitor:

There is no engine code.

Drive the car at night like 10:30pm after warming up, on highway at 55 MPH, exit the highway by coast down without press brake and change gear until speed down to 20MPH while gas level is between 1/4 and 3/4.

Also, using VCDS:

Check Fuel Trims to Rule Out Subtle Air/Fuel Skews

If Mode 01 still shows "Incomplete", the replacement engine's fuel trims might be sitting near the outer boundary of what the ECM considers "normal," causing it to delay validating the monitor.
  1. In VCDS, go to 01-Engine -> Advanced Measuring Values.
    • IDE00021 – Engine speed (RPM)
    • IDE00604 – Adaptation of mixture formation bank 1 at idle / Short-term fuel trim (STFT)
    • IDE00597 – Long-term adaptation of mixture formation bank 1 / Long-term fuel trim (LTFT)

Common Causes for High Fuel Trims After an Engine Swap

If LTFT is slightly high (e.g., +10%), look for these minor physical causes that don't trigger a fault code:
  • Minor Intake Air Leak: A loose PCV hose, slightly unseated dipstick, or loose intake boot clamp behind the Mass Air Flow / Manifold Pressure sensor.
  • Exhaust Manifold / Downpipe Sealing: A slight exhaust leak before or at the primary O2 sensor flange introduces outside air, tricking the O2 sensor into reading lean and adding unnecessary fuel.
  • Purge Valve (N80): A sticking EVAP purge valve can draw unaccounted fuel vapors into the intake.

Short-Term Fuel Trim (STFT) behaves differently than Long-Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) because it moves in real time. While LTFT is a slow, stored average, STFT bounces rapidly around 0% as the engine control module (ECM) continuously adjusts the fuel injectors based on instantaneous oxygen sensor readings.

Here is the exact value range breakdown for STFT on your EA888 Gen 3 engine:

1. Normal / Healthy Range:

  • At Steady Idle or Constant Speed: STFT should oscillate rapidly between approx. -3% and +3% (or -5% and +5%).
  • What it means: The ECM is easily maintaining a perfect stoichiometric air-fuel ratio (λ = 1.0) with only microscopic, real-time injector corrections.

2. Normal Dynamic Range (During Acceleration / Deceleration): Up to

  • During Rapid Throttle Changes: STFT will briefly spike higher or lower (e.g., jump to +8% when you step on the gas or drop to -8% when you lift off).
  • What it means: This transient movement is completely normal as the ECM compensates for sudden airflow changes before the engine stabilizes back to steady-state.

3. Borderline Range (Delays Fuel Monitor Completion):

  • If STFT remains constantly positive (+10% to +15%): The ECM is having to add a significant amount of extra fuel in real time to compensate for unmetered air (a minor vacuum leak, unseated dipstick, PCV breather line leak, or loose intake hose clamp).
  • If STFT remains constantly negative -10%$ to -15%): The ECM is actively subtracting fuel in real time due to over-fueling (leaking EVAP purge valve N80, or slightly dripping injector).
  • Impact on Readiness: When STFT sits constantly outside the 5% band during steady cruising or idling, the ECM delays committing those calculations into LTFT, which keeps the continuous Fuel System Monitor in a "Not Ready" / "Incomplete" state.

4. Fault Code Range: Exceeding

  • If STFT (combined with LTFT) stays above +20% or below -20% for a set duration, the ECM reaches its maximum adaptation limit and illuminates the Check Engine Light (DTC P0171 System Too Lean or P0172 System Too Rich).

Total Fuel Trim Rule of Thumb

To know your engine's true air-fuel correction state, add the two numbers together:

Total Fuel Trim = LTFT + STFT
  • Target: Combined Total Fuel Trim should be within -5% to +5% while idling or holding a steady 55 mph speed.
  • Verification in VCDS: When logging IDE00021 (LTFT) and IDE00022 (STFT) while idling at operating temperature, if STFT is bouncing right around 0% (e.g., -1.5% to +2.1%$, your fuel metering is working as intended.
If LTFT/STFT is not normal, out of the range, even not enough to trigger code, Fuel monitor will not be set ready. VW dealer had replaced with new VW engine, and new intake manifold that come with VW 12 months/12000 miles warranty, I will take it to dealer asking them to measure LTFT and STFT values with their official ODIS and then request them to rectify until VW spec is met, which should then enable Fuel monitor to be ready after driving home from dealership.

According to California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR):

The misfire, fuel, and comprehensive component continuous monitors are ignored during an OBD test on "gas" vehicles.

This means, fuel system monitor not ready will not fail the smog test, provided other monitors are ready and no CEL and no code.
