I remember, when test driving the 2019 DSG Mk7.5 Golf R, when Auto-hold was on and engaged, there was an indicator in the cluster to signify that the car was currently being held.

On my Manual 2019 Golf R, there is no such indicator, even though it also has Auto-hold.

This indicator was separate from the light on the button itself that just shows if Auto-hold was on or off, and only illuminated when the brakes were being held by the system.

Is it possible to turn that indicator on in a car that has a manual transmission?

If you do a "chauffeur stop", auto hold often won't engage, unless you press the brake firmly when fully stopped. It would be really nice to see an indication on the instrument cluster for confirmation.

(Attached is the icon on an Audi, plus this link to the owners manual of the Golf referencing it I recall it being the green foot on the brake icon though, but either is fine for me, I just want some indicator that it's actually holding)

Thanks in advanced!

All golfs automatics have this as standard. The light is red when you apply the handbrake and green when auto-hold is on. manual golf’s cannot and do not have auto-hold as there is no automatic clutch/gearbox. There is no functionality, therefore not possible have a light I’m afraid.

My manual Mk7.5 Golf R has auto hold, and as far as I know, all 2019 golf r's have it too, just not the indicator.

it's got the auto hold button and everything, just like the automatics.

Seems you’re right. If I recall the functionality only works if you have the driver seat belt plugged in.

yeah, undoing the seat belt, opening the driver's door, or the engine stalling will all temporarily deactivate auto hold, and apply the parking brake.

in fact, the stalling "feature" is particularly annoying, because it will apply the parking brake a few seconds after stalling, which means that if you restart your engine and set off right away, the parking brake will apply again as you're setting off, causing you to stall again. I saw a setting to turn that off in the ABS module, but it didn't seem to work, even after soft resetting the ABS module.

I’ve never personally attempted to deactivate it but I’m sure with a little trial and error it could be done. I found by double taking the accelerator it allows the car to continue. Not sure if that’s only on autos?

in general, I actually love auto hold, it's just the stall function that's annoying. there is a setting in the ABS module to turn it off, but it doesn't seem to actually work.

I actually made a video about managing auto hold better on manuals. the two things that are left bothering me is the lack of an indication on the instrument cluster, and it automatically applying the parking brake when you stall.

Try this... https://www.golfmk7.com/forums/inde...or-aid1-golf7-7-5-for-791a-instrument.428019/

I have the green auto hold indication working in my 2015 Golf TDI, 6MT... with Electronic Parking Brake and Digital Dash retrofits.
I'll take a look at this tomorrow. I'm a little hesitant to change coding things when there's no description of what the bits do that I'm changing, especially since my abs module seem to have a far larger number of digits than older golfs.

I will say, I've never seen auto hold use the parking brake, unless ABS gives up for some reason. it almost always uses the actual ABS system applying hydraulic pressure. unless the engine shuts off, you unplug your seatbelt, open the driver's door, or the ABS system loses brake pressure, it will not use the EPB. auto hold will also time out after something like 5 or 10 minutes of holding the car, and switch to the EPB from ABS hydraulic pressure.

I don't know this for sure, but I suspect all the people that think that the EPB is what auto hold uses, are wrong. I've never seen any auto hold system on any car use the EPB instead of the ABS, the reason being quite simple, EPB takes a lot longer to engage and disengage, and only engages on the rear wheels. ABS on the other hand can engage on all four wheels, and is rather quick to respond since it kind of has to be by definition. I don't know this for certain though. I'm just highly skeptical of the claim that the EPB is used for auto hold ever.

It does require epb. Have you got epb?

oh yes, I know it requires epb. and I do have epb. but it seems that some people think it works via the epb, and it doesn't as far as I can tell. it only falls back to it if something "goes wrong".

@nabeelr I didn't suggesting anything about auto hold works. Just gave you some background on my car. If I had just said I had it working on my 2015 TDI 6MT it might invite questions since the 2015 TDI did not come with EPB or AID. I mentioned EPB because without it there is no Auto hold button (and thus function) available, afaik.

For what it's worth, I had to retrofit the EPB capable ABS into my car so at one point had an ABS module that did not come in my car installed with all zeros for coding. And even once I had coding in there there was a lot of trial and error to get everything correct. As you mentioned none of that coding is labeled by vcds but a lot of it has been sussed out by people in the VAG community. If a coding change doesn't work just revert it.

My thread after EPB retrofit... https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/38491/

And the reference (use at your discretion, obviously)... https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/17417/

oh, I know. I wasn't talking about you, but rather some of the comments in that other forum post you linked, it seemed like some people thought that the EPB was what held the car in auto hold mode.

again, I may be wrong, but I don't think the EPB is at all used for auto hold, shy of as a fall back. I only mentioned it here, because I figure the people here are more knowledgeable, and if I'm wrong about that, someone will correct me.

You are correct, ebp is not ‘directly’ part of auto-hold. It works via the hydraulic pressure applied by the brakes.
I just tested it on a car that came into the garage and the green light came on when used. Pity it was an auto and not a manual

this is the thing! that's exactly what I remember on DSG that I test drove before I settled on the manual!

I'm glad someone was able to confirm it, because I bought the car new in 2019, and after all these years, I was starting to doubt myself.

it also drives me nuts that in North America we don't have start stop on manuals. I actually like start/stop because I'm a cheap ass, and I don't want to waste gas at a red light. 😂 I'd much rather waste it roasting the tires on the launch I'll do the moment the light turns green. 😂

You could retrofit start/stop. You will have to add the battery monitor, a neutral position sensor (requires drilling into the transmission case), a vacuum sensor (G608) if you don't have it, possibly a starter depending on what your car already has, some coding of course. One hurdle that the start/stop enable bit in the ECU (for me) was not changeable.

The retrofit has been done on a gasser (the whole thread is good but start around page 5 if you just want the juice)... https://www.golfmk7.com/forums/index.php?threads/start-stop-tdi-usa.420216/

Regarding that hurdle of not being able to change the bit in the ECU... There is open source tuning available for the gasser ECUs and @salvatore_calzone over there was able to change that bit with the ECU unlocked. But it seemed there was more protection on that bit compared to some of the others that you can change at will. It also helped that his ECU already included start/stop and neutral position sensor tables (since that same ECU would be used on an automatic that came with start/stop) although he could have copied them over if needed.

omg, what are you doing to me!? that's something I've always wanted to do, but I keep writing off as too complex, and I haven't even bothered looking into it yet. don't make it seem possible! you're going to nerd snipe the hell out of me. 😂😂😂

I think my car already has a neutral switch... the reason I say this, is when you go into launch control mode (that deactivates the 3800rpm rev limit) it seems to be able to tell if the gear lever is in neutral, or in one of the forward gears. so I suspect it has a neutral switch in it.

the other thing is, if the 7.5 is anything like the Mk 8 start stop system, it should restart the engine if you stall, which was a really nice feature on the German mk8 i drove.

with all this talk of stalling, I promise I don't actually stall all that often. 😂

I'm just here to help you spend your money. Neither my car nor @salvatore's car has launch control so I can't speak to whether you have the neutral position sensor. You could probably look in real time values for the engine module and see it.

But if you look through that thread you will see pictures of where that sensor would be. It's right near the reverse sensor. It's been a while but I think you can see that area with just the airbox removed.

well, I don't think Manuals have real launch control, but, that's silly rev limiter at 3800 that kicks in unless you do the right incantation is still there.

I actually just tested it, and it's about clutch pedal position (with traction control and stability control off), and not gear lever position, as I thought. So there may not be a neutral switch on my manual.

Also, just tried the coding today, and it worked great!

It was exactly this:
Code:
Byte 8 - 45 to 47
Byte 19 - A2 to E2

Curious what the two separate changes are. I can't imagine both are for the one light. Anyways...

Thanks a bunch for the help!
