Last Thursday (07/23), I was driving my 2017 Golf R around town when I pulled away from an intersection and the car suddenly lit up with multiple warnings: EPC, ACC, and EPB faults. At the same time, it went into a semi-hard limp mode with very little (and sometimes no) response from the accelerator pedal.
I managed to drive about 100 feet to my destination, parked, and tried restarting the car several times. The faults remained initially, but after letting the car sit for 30–60 seconds and trying again, it started normally with no warning lights. Very strange.
I decided to head home so I could scan the car myself. About 15 minutes into the highway drive, the same thing happened again, but this time it went into a full limp mode with absolutely no accelerator response. I pulled over and attempted the same restart procedure. However, each restart attempt resulted in the engine struggling to catch, briefly revving to around 1,500 RPM, and then shutting off within 2–3 seconds.
At that point, I had the car towed to the local VW dealer. Their initial diagnosis pointed to loose terminal pins in the ECM-to-throttle-body wiring circuit and/or a failed ECM. They also reported a turbo wastegate actuator position fault, claiming the actuator voltage would not calibrate consistently. They have since repaired the loose pins.
As of last night, they had the vehicle running again, but this morning the issue apparently returned. They reported that the ECM was becoming unusually hot and are now attempting to source a replacement ECM (assuming one can be found).
What seems a bit questionable to me is the recommendation for a new turbocharger due to the wastegate actuator fault. Based on the scan data I captured before taking the car in, I'm not seeing the fault codes I would typically expect for a failed turbocharger or wastegate actuator. I'm curious whether anyone has seen a similar failure before or has experience with an ECM causing these kinds of symptoms. Any thoughts on ECM replacement, diagnosis, or logical next steps would be appreciated.
