No Response From Controller - 19-CAN Gateway - Have I misunderstood how VCDS works all these years?

The question, I always thought when VCDS "talks VAG" it only talks to the CAN Gateway, which itself talks to whatever module. So if I can't communicate with the CAN Gateway because of a faulty connection on the diag port, why can I talk to the other modules? Or does VCDS use K line?

Briefly, my EML came on (and won't go off). Scanned ECU 1 - some error with the camshaft range from 4 months and 400 miles ago (about right with my mileage) - MIL confirmed on. Only 2 occurrences.

Weird... nothing current? And I never noticed the MIL on 4 months ago. Maybe it self cleared and I never looked down or something.

Checked ECU 2 - no errors. Fine, let's autoscan. "Not Supported by the gateway". Even weirder. Tried opening 19 - CAN Gateway and no response from controller. Every module I tried except for this works if opened directly. BCM, engine, ABS... just the gateway.

As per usual, searching comes up with solid advice from Uwe - check the CAN spade connectors on the port. Yeah, pin 6 looks really odd. Common on RHD vehicles.

VCDS is working fine on another Audi of this vintage. CAN Gateway all happy and accessible. Over the weekend I'll troubleshoot it further, I've got enough bits lying around to fabricate some temporary wiring or may even repin the port. But it's also strange how I have an EML with no (active) stored code.

That autoscan shows everything talking over CAN (-80xx in the VCID). You can still do an autoscan in the current state of things if you add a custom line to your MyAutoscan.txt and select that instead of "Auto Detect":

(don't forget to add a new line after that).
From your description, it sounds like every address except 19 should then be found in that autoscan, which would indicate an issue with the gateway itself, but not to the point that it can't propagate the diagnostics to the other addresses. It will be interesting to see if the other controllers have something negative to say about the gateway itself.

Ah I see, you can manually put in the addresses and skip the auto detect - which presumably relies on the CAN Gateway? Handy to know, appreciated.

But Plot Twist.
Thought I'd go out and clear all ECU codes to at least see if the EML goes out. It did, and it worked (clearing codes on these can be a PITA as some faults "bounce" from one ECU to the other, and propagate back before you get to the other ECU). So very weird how the fault was logged 4 months ago but - I'm pretty sure - the EML didn't illuminate until today?

But now the CAN Gateway is accessible again? My concern in asking my original question was if this is unexpected behaviour and indeed indicates the gateway is on the blink. So, maybe it is?

(The exhaust flaps don't trigger an EML).

It depends. On cars that have a proper CAN Gateway, which this one certainly does, communications do indeed go through the CAN Gateway. But if you select an individual control module like 01-Engine, and VCDS doesn't get an answer via CAN, it will fall back and try K-Line. However, I would not expect that to produce any results in this car.

I don't know as much about the subject as you, but I was on the fence. If you think it's a dodgy connection I'll certainly focus on that, not worry too much. And maybe a little prayer. Don't think a new gateway would be cheap on these...

Couldn't be bothered doing anything over the weekend. Had a look last night. Seems likely it's faulting or failing. I'm not going to do anything yet, wait for it to come back, but I'm unsure whether replacing this can be done with VCDS?

I did find this post on VCDS forums (Chassis Type: 42), which I assume is this guy over on the R8 forums, so seems it's relatively trivial? But elsewhere I read it triggers component protection and needs ODIS to remove said protection? Was this person lucky or is it plug and play?

I could not connect to 19-CAN Gateway module while using VCDS and consequently I could not perform an auto-scan on the car using diagnostic software.

However my car did start and ran fine and I was able to connect to other individual modules directly such as 03-ABS Brakes or 01-Engine modules. May be my CANBUS module was only partially defective.

BTW swapping the CANBUS module was only a diagnostic step for me as I was convinced that no communication with CANBUS module was due to a short-circuit or an interference from another module. But after swapping out the module, I was able to connect to 19-CAN Gateway module right away :D.

$25 well spent.

I guess if that person got a second hand module working with little effort I've nothing to worry about. It is nearly a 20 y/o car. But worth asking.

Contrary to the pictures, another angle shows pin #6 is seated correctly. Tugging at the back or pushing it from the front doesn't move a mm.

Using a spare ODB male port I had lying around I connected up the VCDS cable with separate wires. Works fine. Disconnecting pin #6 (CAN High), K line still connected, completely disables all functionality. Only the basic modules are listed and none can be communicated with. This is different than when the issue presented itself, where it was fully functional apart from the CB Gateway.

Hmm, seems this CAN Gateway is re-used from a different platform, 1K0. Mine:

Part No SW: 420 907 530 HW: 1K0 907 951

420 = R8, 1K0 = Golf? Probably Golfs, A3's etc of that era.

The link I posted (from the other person) was:

I wonder if the software on the one destined for a 1K0 platform is more forgiving than one destined for an R8.
