2005 Rialta/2004 Eurovan problems

I'll try my best to do this properly.

I've had VCDS for over 20 years, but only used it for the minor things that came up on the Rialta and Jettas. Thought I had an account here, but found no reminders of it, so got a new account yesterday.

I recently bought my second Rialta, but this one has the CEL/MIL on - generic codes P0449 and P2401. Drove it home to TX from FL. No noticeable driving problems. Now I'd like to get rid of the codes so I can more thoroughly enjoy driving it. To begin with, I checked the blinker fluid and muffler bearings, so that's out of the way. I cleared the codes using VCDS, started the engine for a minute or so, then shut down to do a scan. Here's what it said:

I did a bit of checking, but feel sort of lost at this point. Way past anything I've done in the past. I know the Short-To-Ground is often caused by a blown fuse or bad relay, though usually a lot more shown, so I checked all of them. Found a couple of fuses that didn't seem to be related that needed replacing. Any suggestions are definitely appreciated. FYI, I do have the Bentley, most of the VW test cables (including the VAG 1598/31 for the ECU/ECM), and many of the tools needed for these critters.

Yup. Get out your wiring diagram for the engine, check if you have 12V on the one side of the LDP and EVAP solenoid. Typically this sorts of things are turned on by the ECU pulling the other side low. If no +12, use WD to trace back to see where it's it's not making it though.

Thanks. Guess I just needed a small kick in the right direction. I have the 12V at the t4e connector in the engine compartment, but not at either of the places at the canister platform. I will find it eventually. I don't much like being out there when it's over 90, so time is limited this time of year. Supposed to be a cold front coming through, so only 88 or 89 on Wed. & Thu. though!

BTW, probably should have mentioned that I'm 98% sure that the previous owner had a local 'expert' working on it, so...

TA-DA! Naturally I started at the wrong end, but found a broken wire (and one almost broken) about 8 inches from the t4e connector. Hard to tell if it's mouse damage or from the battery being mishandled. Anywho, the CEL is off and no codes (yet?) I'm planning to take a little road trip tomorrow to see what else, if anything, shows up, so I may be back...
