Possible to disable Kessy without side effects? MQB Platform

Hi everyone, new user here that recently purchased VCDS and hoping that you can help with a question.

I have a question (or a sanity check) about Kessy for a SEAT Toledo 2017 Xcellence car that developed a Kessy fault one day after opening the doors and starting the engine a warning sign lit up on the dash: "Keyless access system faulty".
The warning message is displayed every few seconds while driving.

I ran a VCDS scan and the results are below:

I cleared the fault codes but the error immediately returns when the car is switched off and on, or locked and the door handle touched from outside, the same message on the dash is displayed.

As a troubleshooting step, I removed the drivers door handle and swapped with the passenger door handle, ran a new VCDS scan and the fault followed the handle: the drivers side reported the same issue with open circuit. Cleared the codes, swapped the handles back and ran a new scan and the fault returned to the passenger door handle.

I never use Kessy and prefer to switch it off completely which I am struggling to do successfully for this particular Kessy component.

If I select Module 05 - ACC / START and select to disable the passenger door handle, and also the drivers door handle, the same error is displayed, meaning it makes no difference, I changed the bits to 0 for the below options:

Activation of KESSY door handle- Drivers door
Activation of KESSY door handle- Passenger door

I also change Passive entry drivers door handle and passenger passive door handle not activated to 1 and saved the changes but still see the Kessy error on the dashboard.

I've tried to completely disable KESSY with option 09 central electrics disable keyless access and when I save the change I am unable to start the car with the push button unless I hold the key fob up to the start button.

I've also tried to disable KESSY in 09 Gateway - 5 Acc/Start Auth and have the same issue as above.

Is there any way to disable KESSY on the car with the MQB platform without side effects?

Are these the only options?

1.) Live with the constant warnings while driving
2.) Disable KESSY completely and use the key fob held to the push button every time the car needs to start
3.) Replace the faulty door handle with a working door handle, either new OEM which is not cheap or used and working OEM, or a non OEM door handle from China with questionable reliablilty/quality.

A Google search says that the door handle connection can be bridged with a 100 Ohm resistor to fool the system that the door handle antenna circuit is closed. Is that even a good idea?

If it were mine, and I wasn't willing to replace the handle with a working one, I would try it. I mean, you've already tried all the other obvious things to disable it.

That said, personally I like KESSY and would go replace the bad handle, but I understand that you might feel differently.

One additional idea here. I realize coding address 05 alone didn't do it but what if: It needed to be locked and take a good mid-day CAN Nap before it decided to cooperate? Also, what if it needs coding and ADP tweaked? Please post Adaptation and measuring values function control module maps from address 05 the next time you are connected to this car with VCDS.


As long as you open those with Notepad and wrap them in CODE tags the results will look similar to my adpmap-05-5Q0-959-435-C example here:

If it were mine, and I wasn't willing to replace the handle with a working one, I would try it. I mean, you've already tried all the other obvious things to disable it.

That said, personally I like KESSY and would go replace the bad handle, but I understand that you might feel differently.

I searched Google and the suggestion was to use a resistor between 1 and 5 Ohm but recommended a 3.3 Ohm resistor, the previous suggestion was to use a 100 Ohm resistor, it seems that advice changes daily!
Google Gemini said that if I didn't have a resistor, I could simply bridge pins 1 and 3 (or 1 and 4 was another suggestion) with a wire to close the circuit, I tried both pin couples and cleared the fault, still had the issue. I wonder if a specific resistance is required for the antenna. I could measure the drivers handle for values as I know that works but this seems like a MacGyvered solution to use resistors but I was curious if that would even work. I'd either like to disable KESSY completely or I've found a non OEM handle that is reasonably priced.

One additional idea here. I realize coding address 05 alone didn't do it but what if: It needed to be locked and take a good mid-day CAN Nap before it decided to cooperate?

I cleared the fault and changed the settings to disable keyless access for the passenger door last night and locked the doors with key fob. I'll check on the car later tonight, will give it roughly 24 hours and see if the error message returns and will let you know.

Update: the changes made to disable the passenger door and waiting for almost 24 hours did not help. As soon as I unlocked the car with the key fob and opened the door .... bing.. Keyless Access system faulty. That's well and dandy but I don't need reminding every 20 seconds while driving! Der technologische Rückschritt :D

OK so this is experiential at best, and it may be easier to get a used door handle painted the same color if these functions are specific to the Dataset, but I would try coding 05 to: 002F0C

If that wasn't the coding you already tested please try that with a car window open and lock / unlock the car doors to make sure we didn't divide by zero. Providing the coding was accepted and we didn't manage to lock you out of the car entirely I'd see if there's any change on the dash.

If the problem persists I have my eye on some of the ADP channels. I'll list them in the order that I would experiment but do so when you have time, at least one window open and/or other car doors open with the latches struck shut.

I purchased an aftermarket door handle from Ali Express for £22.17 (~$29.68 USD) which arrived on Saturday.
Product name on Ali Express: OEM for VW Tiguan mk1 2008-2016 Jetta Beetle Polo Sagitar for Skoda Yeti Rapid for SEAT Toledo 5N0837205L Door handle kessy
I connected the replacement door handle and no more Keyless Access errors.

I can also confirm that the following setting will disable the Keyless Access (KESSY) on the doors (but from what I've experienced, you need a working KESSY system first):

I guess that for this model of KESSY, it's not possible to disable the individual antenna's, at least that's what I'm thinking from the results of all my tests but could be mistaken.

One thing that I'd like to try is reconnect the faulty handle and then see if the fault definitely comes back. Then swap the new handle with the faulty handle and clear codes. Then disable passive entry with the option below while the system is in an operational state:
  • ENG105808-ENG123039-DeveloperCoding: Passiv Entry Exit (Byte 2)-Passive Entry Exit,activated
then swap the faulty handle back in and see if the fault returns while KESSY/passive entry was in a previously disabled state. Not sure if that's a good test but I'd like to see if passive entry was disabled while KESSY was in a operational state (via ENG123039) if the fault returns when the faulty handle is reconnected.

I like that idea!

The front door handle functions may specific to the Dataset (in which case VCDS cannot assist) but the fact that you can retrofit rear door fancy handles to the Golf with VWKESSYMQB using VCDS (not ODIS or VCP) inspires confidence.

I had some time to test today and unfortunately it didn't help with the warning messages. I replaced the working door handle with faulty door handle and the Keyless warning immediately came back. I cleared the fault code and connected the working door handle and disabled Keyless access with ENG105808-ENG123039-DeveloperCoding: Passiv Entry Exit (Byte 2)-Passive Entry Exit,deactivated
I connected the faulty door handle again and the Keyless Access warning came back

I was curious about something now that I have a functional KESSY system and wanted to disable KESSY via coding instead of adaptation/developer coding.
I reverted all 05: Acc/Start Auth settings to original values and then tested keyless access and keyless access worked fine for both driver and passenger doors.

I then changed 05: Acc/Start Auth coding to 002F0C and confirm that this disables keyless access for both doors. I prefer this as it's a cleaner solution instead of using the developer coding

It would not make me think about the door handle in any case. Or is this fault code known to be mislabeled?

The passenger door handle was faulty (or the wiring to the handle with an open circuit fault, but wiring was fine in my case). I swapped the working drivers door handle with faulty passenger door handle then ran a VCDS scan and the fault followed the door handle, VCDS scan reported the same antenna open circuit fault with the drivers side, potentially eliminating any faulty wiring issues on the passenger side.
I bought a new non OEM door handle and no more KESSY issues :)

VCDS will identify the specific interior KESSY antenna if it was faulty, I don't think there is an interior passenger side or drivers side KESSY antenna, from what i've seen online, the interior KESSY antenna's are located in the midle of the car. VCDS will identify the interior KESSY antenna's as 1 or 2 something, similar to the following:

1058315 - Interior Antenna 2 - open circuit
and
1057547 - Antenna for Keyless Entry System; Interior Antenna 1
B1172 13 [00001000] - Open Circuit

How difficult was the door handle swap. Any tips?

I need to research PN to be sure to get the right one...

It's pretty easy to remove the door handles if the Golf Sportwagon has the same door handle design as a Skoda Rapid/SEAT Toledo. If you open the doors you should see a black flexible plastic cover that can be easily removed. The driver's door handle is held in place with one torx bolt (has a lock), but the passenger side is very easy to remove, the handle is held in place with a plastic push/pull clip, there is a tool that fits into this clip, I made one from the wire of a coat hanger. The official VW tool is similar to the one below:

Once you have the door handle retaining clip or torx bolt loose (drivers side) the door handle cap/cover is easily removed if you pull on the door handle, the door handle can then be removed by gently pulling the door handle open and towards the back of the car and the door handle should then slide out of the door. If you then wiggle and gently pull the door handle it should come out of the door completely with the electrical plug connected. The electrical plug can be released by carefully lifting the clip and pulling the electrical plug off.
