My 1st post guys, hope I'm following protocol. I have a B8.5 S4 (2014) with a replaced steering rack and transmission. Audi flashed the transmission no problem but I'm having difficulty with the rack. My most pressing issue is VCDS rejects the security code in the pop up bubble.

Scan with bad rack (Possibly not even the rack that came on the car originally Audi states different revision than the vin shows)

Understood, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I've tried the one listed on many write ups as well, 40168 to no avail, I'm just not sure where I go about finding the code the control module will accept.

I just got rejected attempting I believe 20113 to the central electronics module as well which is what the pop up box suggested so I'm not sure if it's my vcds setup on my computer or these codes aren't correct. Just adding this for context.

At a glance I think the old/faulty rack was from a B8.5 A5 Cabrio donor vehicle based on the 8F0909852H dataset that was flashed into it. It was faulty either way but I agree with the Audi dealer's suspicion that it was not original.

Next, the current condition scan is lacking communication with most of the control modules and it ended with VIgn 0.0V (meaning ignition/terminal 15 off). Most diagnostic functions are not available with the ignition off so please scan it again, perhaps with the engine at idle, and post that copy so we can see if that was a fluke versus an actual problem on the car side that we need to shift focus to.

If the terminal 15 issue is ongoing that may directly explain the Unknown Error 00 with SA 43702 in address 44 however that is rarely needed because it applies to Basic Setting Enabling. For that reason, when the engine is at idle please try the full lock right and left steps at the very bottom of this page:

The left/right full lock steps I've tried but the angle is out more than 20 degrees as of this moment. I'm about to pull all lower control arms and do the bushings so that I can get an alignment I was hoping was going to fix these end stops.

Excellent. Everything is communicating correctly and this scan looks a lot better.

For science, you can reconnect to address 44 at idle and see if Security Access 43702 = Basic Setting Enabling is accepted but I don't think that is the answer if you see a full 20° discrepancy. That is the specification I located when I added the Resetting of learned values for steering assistance notes at the bottom of this page but I don't like it at all:


When you are working with a smaller range (such as +/- 8°) you are less likely to encounter difficulty but I don't think you are going to make it worse if you try that once more prior to the remaining repairs and before the next alignment.

Every time I attemtped to access 44 I had the car running, it was only off when I ran the auto scan. The two sides are currently out beyound 20 degrees, the left side reads 515.70 and the right is 465. I installed the rack, even swapped the tie rod ends and I had no idea what I was doing. As soon as I change the bushings out, I will let the professionals do it the right way :D. What I did was set the rack to the incorrect rack which I pulled from the car, I believe I was working off bad intel!

OK, when you get to the point where the new bushing are installed and you are about to wrap up the work make sure to pop into address 16 (that's the clockspring/slipring and where G85 lives) with the ignition on and check MVB 033.3 Steering Angle (Internal)

Make sure that's as close as possible to 0.0° with the steering wheel straight. This is easier said than done without a drive-on rack and the full professional kit but as long as you have the wheels on and suspension loaded with G85 centered you might be able to correct that toe getting it closer to center using a tape measure. That will not substitute the need for a real alignment but the tires will thank you on the test drive after repairs and the trip to the shop. If you get it close enough the drive to the alignment shop might be with fully functional power steering assist.

I went outside and put the length of both tie rod ends in relation to the threads on the tie rods equal, did the left right full lock and the error is gone, however it made my alignment horrible, the wheels fighting each other, so i returned it to the "lopsided" setting it was previously. The steering error is gone and now I have full steering assist. I will have it parked until the bushings arrive and then drive it only to the alignment after, I think I'm in good shape. I still need to figure out the security codes for the modules as i'm trying to unlock, but I'm getting there.
