OK I hope today is the day this "ureka" moment occurs - It could do and it is important. When you mentioned "bits" etc... previously I thought "I'm lost" this happens [lots] - I'll see if I can get this exact page when I launch VCDS again in about an hour or so.

I do recall seeing the Long Coding Helper - but doing anything with it yesterday was not possible - Hence the mental block, however it is getting closer.

So it looks like there is a feature that just needs a little learning.

So the coding in place will be correct then [this was suspected] as is is known the old battery is WET and so is the new battery but seeing evidence [confirmation] [reconciliation] acknowledgement in VCDS is what was eluding me and I knew I was missing something but didn't know what - Not a nice feeling!

Navigation of the long coding helper - I'll get back in an hour or so hopefully with some more progress.

Hello again,

long_code_helper.png
OK - I've had another look at this since yesterday - and now there is a further understanding - It's EZ when U know how!!! - A little clunky but all the information was in place for the battery. The coding for the battery type is done from the "interactive" menu from the coding helper from within battery regulation - I can see this now - I've borrowed Uwe's picture for ease of inclusion as when I was in the car with the laptop taking screenshots is possible but quite difficult.

So, the coding "F326015A" is the correct coding for the WET battery - lead acid - The new battery is the same as the old one. If an AGM battery was installed the coding becomes F326115A - With the fifth digit changing from a zero to a one. Then this would need to be applied with the "DO IT" button pending acceptance from VCDS - But this isn't needed I'm just talking it through.

This would conclude the battery coding - All done - Thank you for your assistance - This seems to have gone very well! - It is now possible to get the car back on the road - Thank you.

When Autoscan was performed and included here on the forum there are 47 errors - How relevant are these? and do I need to bother about these?

The car was serviced a while back - It hasn't driven at all in a few years - so no wear and tear - This might be another subject for another thread here on the forum?

There are 10 kinds of people in the world:
Those who understand binary, and those do don't.

Clear all of them. Drive the car for a day or two. Re-scan. See what comes back.

OK - I'll take this as a work in progress - with learning steps along the way.

Another query out of interest and in case I've missed something. During some discussions here on the forum the VW OEM part number for the size of battery I've bought and installed is 5K0915105H.

5K0 915 105 H - Does this information need to be input into VCDS? - I thought it would have been but I've not done this and also I've not seen where this would be input if it does need to be. I'd rather ask this rather than not, again for a greater understanding - Thank you.

No, not on this car.

Some older BMS systems required the part number instead of capacity and battery type. They would look up the part number in an internal table and determined the capacity and battery type from the part number.

OK Uwe - Great info - On this car not the case but on some others yes - Glad I asked so no more bases to cover. I was worried that for some "unknown" reason the new battery would just stop working because of not performing some task necessary for correct operation.

All I can say is WOW what a crash course!

Here is the interactive manual that you can click around and read about. It is safe to practice on as you are not on/in your vehicles network. Scroll down the page and notice the links to certain functions of VCDS. Manual Index.
