Long time VCDS user, but 1st post!

I'm having trouble after the Sharan presented a "600mile" adblue warning out of the blue - and after a refil is not resetting.. Heres some info on the vehicle and the timeline of events.


2012 Sharan 7N, 2.0TDI DSG (CFFB engine)
Owned since: July 2013 (11k miles)

Status of car: Stock.
Dieselgate: Dealer "fix" applied when VW contacted us around 2016. A few weeks later, a fault developed with the NOx sensor, which was replaced (under good-will).
Dec 2024: VW Dealership carried out an Adblue heater replacement due to fault codes (sensor level).
No issues when topping up the Adblue fluid before or since Dec 2024.
Various other issues not related to emissions: Ignition barrel 2021, Aux heater pump replacement 2024, Air con compressor March 2026, DAB reception dead (ongoing).

End of March 26, the Sharan took the family+luggage on a faultless 600mile round trip. Predominantly motorway speeds of 60-70mph.
Visited friends who previously had a Seat Alhambra, but sold it due to numerous electrical faults and Adblue issues...
I made the mistake of saying out loud "Ours has generally been ok other than general maintenance, semi regular adblue top up and the adblue repair in 2024"

08th April, during a 40 mile motorway trip - Adblue light and warning reads "Fill Adblue, 600 miles until no-start". At one point I had an abnormal warning saying "start stop disabled" (or something like that - I was driving so didnt catch the complete message)
Later that day, 10 litres of Adblue added in one go. However, I made the mistake of not waiting a minute before starting the engine.
Adblue Light remained on and warning still shows on start-up.
Fault codes scanned (saved log) and cleared - SCR tank level detection reset & reset SCR lock.

09th April, I was curious whether the tank needed more (but having performed a reset, felt VCDS would not give a true reading) - so added more fluid... a further 5-6 litres - she must have been very empty!
I repeated my mistake of not waiting a minute before starting the engine. (facepalm)

Is my blocker to running the SCR Efficiency Test. However I wanted to double check with those far more knowledgable than me before spending £300+ on a new NOx sensor :-)

Logging was (is still) planned for this weekend, and I've been watching the count-down drop to "500 miles until..."
Miraculously, this morning the Adblue warning is no where to be seen on the dashboard. No warning message, no "bong", no adblue bottle illuminated. I've not plugged in the VCDS since last week. Car has been driven as normal.

Mystery... (for now)

I'll still get logging done and rescan for codes. I'd like to see if there are potential issue(s) bubbling below the threshold that might need attention in the future.

the best thing to do with the Adblue system (coding out ;) ) is DONT wait till the screen tells you to top up and than drive 2000kms to do so.
The ureum is very crystalising and the lower the level the better it makes crystals and will block/break the parts.
So fill it up more often/on a higher level instead of waiting till the last fumes..

Update: other priorities rose to the top of the list of life, and logging dropped out from the immediate range - that was until I paid the Sharan a compliment, and 10 mins later the fault reappeared.

From what I could understand - the tank was reporting as full of adblue, temperature ok, pump working etc. But one of the NOX sensors was not reporting anything.

I guess the next step is checking the corresponding fuse, and then the nox sensor plug for voltage/good earth.

Yours has the early NOX cat which is prone to blockage from a dribbling reductant injector and this is detected by NOX sensor 2 as in the fault code stored.
