I recently received my RT OBDII extension cable, its about 24 inches long and all pins/wires are present. (many obd cables do not provide for pin #1 , 12v Ign. switched) I wanted to use this cable as it makes plugging in the Hex-Net very easy. I simply reach in through the drivers side open (rolled down, remember those days) window grab the end of the cable and plug in the HN.
Routing the cable isn't a big deal, but some patience is required and no disassembly is required. Note the pictures. There is room under the steering column, its close, but it will fit. I plugged the cable into the DLC, then "fed" the HN end through the opening under the dash that is in-line with the steering column and with some patience fed it through and over*** some plastic finger trim. Once un-coiled from this location, there is about 12 inches to work with ; more than enough length to reach in the open door window and plug in the HN. There is still room to raise and lower the column when the cable is tucked in to that small space.
*** Note: do you see that rectangular item in the photo ; that is a air-bag (Audi B9.5). My routing goes up and over that box and I do not recommend you route anything in this AB's path. (up and over, and not under).
