in 70 years have we really advanced from 45 MPG US (54 MPG UK)
I'm sure if you were willing to settle for 35 hp in a very small car, we could do better than that these days. I mean engine efficiency has increased since then.

There's a guy in Ohio that built a streamliner car around a 1.9 TDI that gets over 100 mpg.

Do we really need any more? Mrs Crasher relates of a tale where four adults, two children and two large dogs went on holiday in the early 1970’s in an Austin 1100 from Lancaster (the original one, in England) to Scotland (I can’t see Merica has borrowed that name yet) and all survived.

One downside of DC fast charging is that you can't do this if you're attacked:

That's why EV owners need to carry an AK-47... :D

Difficult to conceal. Pragmatic solution: Keep the rifle in the trunk. Carry a pistol on your person.

Because nobody is ever violently attacked in England, or because you drive a gas car and can use the pump to defend yourself?

No one has to "live that way"... It's a choice. Now days no matter where you live, crims have guns and they do not hesitate to kill. In reality if you are not properly trained and packing heat, when the crims attack you, then you become a statistic. So everyone has a choice - either protect yourself from evil/crims or become a statistic. Even in places where guns are banned the crims all have guns. In places like Blighty and elsewhere crims can and still do kill with knives. You have a God given right to protect yourself against evil. It's your choice.

It is a whole different mind set here that is impossible to convey without experiencing it. In the UK my only exposure to fire arms was as an RAF cadet and at a strictly controlled shooting club, otherwise you just don't ever encounter them outside airports and such. On my two trips to the USA, my expose to firearms was daily and quite alarming.

And yet you were never shot, shot at, or in any danger at all. So the alarm was entirely within your own head and purely emotional.

An armed society is a polite society. The highest rates of criminal gun usage in the USA are in the areas with the strictest gun laws, and the lowest rates of criminal gun usage are in the areas where people can freely carry. That is not a coincidence - when there's a very real risk that their "victim" can turn and shoot them, criminals tend to think twice.

Americans cannot understand the mindset of most of the rest of the world with regards guns and most of the rest of the world cannot understand Americans with regards Guns. I personally choose to live in societies where both guns and criminals are less prevalent than in the US

The foreign media and U.S. radicals IME tend to make a big deal out of people owning guns because they detest guns. Contrary to what the media would like people to believe, the U.S. is not like the wild west where everyone carries and they have daily shoot-outs at the OK Corral. :( It's basically a propaganda campaign by those who hate guns and fail to comprehend that you become a defenseless victim if you are unable to protect yourself from criminals who all have guns. Banning guns has never stopped criminals from having them... and it never will.

I was in a restaurant in New York when someone was shot on the other side of the road, the rest of the diners barely flinched. In Arizona, we were sitting outside on a friends front porch when there was gunfire in the distance and two rounds were heard to pass though the area before police arrived and all hell broke loose, so we went inside. Later in Tucson, we were coming out of a club when a low rider drove by and the driver was gesturing out of the door with an AR15 looking gun draped down the side of the car, that might have had something to do with my American host making loud remarks about Latin Americans. Later, they took up us into the Yellow Mountains sightseeing but he brought along a 9mm and an Ar15 so "we can shoot some beer cans boy". On the way back, the Ford Explorer we were in decided it didn't like its left rear tyre being on the rim (this was 1994) and the thing rolled sideways down the road three times. When the Police turned up, one of them said "you been having fun shoot-in up here"...

I'm having a hard time believing you because that concentrated volume of gun-related incidents doesn't actually happen anywhere in the USA. You're just as likely to be struck by lightning as you are to be anywhere near more than one firearm-related incident (unless you're in a deep-blue inner city ghetto...)

That reads like a political cartoon, not like what life is actually like in America. About the only believable parts are the recreational target shooting and the accent of the cops. If you somehow really did experience everything you described, then I suggest you start investing in superstitious luck charms, because you clearly need a lot less BAD luck in your life!

It is what happened to me in 1994 on a three week purchasing tour of the USA. There were a number of other experiences I could relate, one where I was helping direct the traffic at that years Water Fest (the organiser Peter Bormann was a friend/supplier) when a police officer insisted he took my picture whilst I sat in his patrol cars drivers seat with my hand on his shotgun (no, that isn't a euphemism), I still have the picture somewhere. Or when I was in Tucson and my host got a bit drunk in a Mexican restaurant so I went outside for a cigarette and took my bottle of beer with me, only for a police car to pull up and two officers jump out hands on weapons because I was street drink, which I didn't know was wrong. They backed off and went on their way when I spoke to them.

US gun deaths per year are roughly 130 per million with half being homicides and half being suicide. US people struck by lightning per year are 1 per million. You are much more likely to be shot than struck by lightning. Maybe you reduce you chance of being shot by carrying a gun but that is probably offset the increased risk of using that gun to commit suicide or death though an accident

UK gun related homicide deaths per year are 0.5 per million.

I know you can prove anything with statistics but I also know which society I would prefer to live in.

Now do knives, vehicular homicides, blunt objects, and other weapons of choice for the people the UK keeps importing who insist upon violence.

US gun deaths per year are roughly 130 per million with half being homicides and half being suicide.
That statistic is heavily misleading. The vast majority of those gun-related homicides are from criminals shooting at other criminals (gang warfare), despite our government bending over backwards to try and claim otherwise.
  • Black / African American: 27.5 per 100,000
  • American Indian / Alaska Native: 9.3 per 100,000
  • Hispanic / Latino: 5.5 per 100,000
  • White: 2.0 per 100,000
  • Asian / Pacific Islander: 1.1 per 100,000
There's a very obvious pattern here that no one wants to talk about.

It isn't that we don't want to talk about it, the fact is, we aren't allowed to... in fact actively and legally prohibited from it. Here, I don't think it actually allowed to gather the data.

... and that's why I will never visit the British Isles, despite having a great love for the people and culture of Ireland (as well has ancestry from there!). I refuse to exist anywhere that my speech and can land me in jail for speaking the truth non-violently.

The bottom line is guns are NOT the problem, criminals and evil crazy people are the problem. We don't see gov'ment banning knives, cars, planes, etc. that are used to murder we see them targeting guns instead of criminals. It's as dumb as you can get.

A few years ago I read that some supermarket in the UK was stopping the sale of individual kitchen knives because some crackhead bought a single knife and then went out in the streets and attacked multiple people. Did banning the sale of one kitchen knife prevent other attacks. Do crazy people in the UK now need to buy a complete set of steak knives when they want to attack people? :banghead: The ignorant knee-jerk reactions are very counterproductive because few want to address the real issue which is CRIME not the instrument used to commit the crime.

As we have seen just recently another criminal co-pilot attempted to crash a plane full of people after attacking the senior pilot with an emergency cockpit axe. Will society now ban all airplanes and emergency cockpit axes because another terrorist tried to kill innocent people? It's time to get real and stop blaming the instrument used to commit crimes and instead remove the crims from society.
