That's why we need self driving cars!
Yes, many drivers would rather be doing something else than driving around (and a good part of them _do_ do something else, like fondling their phones... talk about stupid people) --> self driving cars would improve the lives of the rest of us, who actually enjoy driving.
As long as they are not mandated.
The thing is, the wind is strongly blowing in that direction: see all the mandated toys and "brain diapers" that are being mandated, especially over here in Europe (but I think the US is affected as well).
And if you want to have self driving cars which do not require an army of very good, smart programmers to implement (maybe just LLM-powered mechanical parrots, which if the trend is maintained would be equally expensive, but I digress...), you _should_ mandate them.
Self driving cars are actually rather good at self driving themselves since the late '90, as soon as we could infer in real time something a little better as a 2-layes, 15 neuron perceptron (and already just with that they weren't all bad, except when they tried to jump into rivers parsed as nice, smooth roads). The huge hurdle is to handle the uncertainty and chaos introduced by agents who follow rules "fuzzily" and use JIT-based heuristics to navigate, commonly known as humans.
If we banned humans from driving, we could roll out tomorrow, see the road death toll fall considerably, alongside a marked increase in efficiency of the fleet and so on.
What's not to like?
Despite being European, I do enjoy some amount of personal freedom. The freedom of taking the wheel of my car and go wherever the f***k I like on my own terms is something I value above a very little absolute reduction of the risk of dying horribly while doing so.
