I am looking to buy an EV for the first time (ID.4) I already have a Hex v2. I took it with me to look at a car, and plugged in and did a full scan. there were several errors listed but most of them were generated when it was on a rolling road annual test, or related to overnight charging on a time-based energy tarrif. So I am not too worried about those. What I was most hoping to learn was about the battery health. Can the VCDS give me that info? I have registered 1/3 VINS (that being my A4); I obviously don't want to register the VIN of every car I look at, so maybe I am limited to what I can check and I would totally understand that if it's a VIN locked feature.

Seems crazy to me -when battery health is such a critical factor when buying a used EV- it should be visible in the cars infotainment system like the mileage of a non EV, or the battery health of an iPhone.

Any advice would be most appreciated, thanks in advance

Greg

Remember VW USA's advice on the ID.4, something along the lines of "don't park it near anything flammable" due to "potential thermal events..."

Interesting.. I guess they had a fault and did a recall. Thanks for the headsup.
Volkswagen has issued urgent recalls for certain 2023–2025 ID.4 EVs due to battery fire risks, advising owners to park outside, avoid DC fast chargers, and limit charging to 80%. The issue stems from potential battery module defects and missing safety software that can cause overheating, even while parked. Repairs are free.

Please can someone from RT (@Uwe?) confirm but AFAIK looking without changing anything does not use up a VIN?

It’s positively encouraged to use your enthusiast HEX-V2 for this purpose, but heed Eric’s advice of declining the VIN registration.
