i have installed a used ecu in a 1998 a4 . the ecu came out of a 2wd auto and is going into a awd manual. i have gone into the coding on the engine module and entered the correct code then clicked do it. the computer will then go to the previous screen . it pulls up and in the line where it says soft coding will appear the old code. there is the little symbol rotating like it is doing something but it never gets any further. if i click on coding again it comes up with the original code not the new one. below the code there is a window that says shop code or something like that and it is filled with zeros . what am i doing wrong ? thanks , jeff

Which engine? 1.8T or 2.8 V6?

Try a Login with 01283 before changing the coding.

i have tried using the 01283 code in the login , in the upper left corner of the screen just getting the spinning loading symbol. i let it go for about 10 minutes but nothing happened . i then went forward to the coding screen and tried it again, same thing, i then tried the code in the box where it says shop. should i try to change the coding on the old ecu to see if it works. i am replacing the old ecu because the idle control circuit is bad. the idle circuit is working fine with the used ecu i installed. thanks , jeff

So correct coding for the ECU in this car should be 06251.

A stock ECU should accept this, but in the distant past, we did see some of these ECUs that had been "chipped" that refused to accept certain coding changes.

I would open this one up and look for signs of it being chipped. Those ECUs were usually modified by soldering not by flashing, not by flashing through the data port, and often (but not always) using a daughter board.
