My 2006 Phaeton has been sitting for about a year and a half with a blown air strut. Runs great and moves, but can't really leave my driveway. If I put it back on the road (and I'm teetering on that) I'd want to refresh the airbags on all four corners, not just the blown one. I am good friends with the Phaeton suspension controller and am perfectly comfortable doing the swap, but I'm having a bit of decision paralysis around the replacement.
Options:
1. Factory replacements, NLA.
2. Bilstein B4 OE replacements. $2000 per corner, $8000 total. I can swing it but I'd have to sleep on the couch for a week.
3. Have RMT rebuild my existing struts. $500/corner, $2000 total. Feel fine about the rebagging, but the dampers have 120k on them...
4. eBay mystery brand air struts. $250/corner, $1000 total. Who knows, and I **do not** like the huge claimed cross-reference range for cars that originally had different part numbers for a reason.
5. Retrofit coilovers. Not sure who makes a good kit. I'm willing to lose height adjustment, prefer to keep adjustable damping, not willing to lose luxobarge ride quality.
6. Chuck it in the fuck-it bucket. I love the car and I can spare the money, but I could use the life-priority simplification.
What are people doing these days for Bentley / Phaeton suspension overhauls?
