Hello,
When I bought my 2008 R8 in USA, its tpms functionality was disabled. I was sorting out few other things and now have time to address tpms issue.
So it seems that tpms was deleted from module '17- Instruments' and in module '65-Tire Pressure' the adaptation channel 1 was set to zero. Even though car' tpms sensors were removed at that time, there was no tpms warning on the screen because tpms was deleted in '17- Instruments'.

So I changed coding for '17- Instruments' from 0069272 to 0085272 and for module '65-Tire Pressure' I changed the adaptation value of channel 1 from 0 to 1. And now I am getting tpms malfunction error in the dash. Then I bought aftermarket tpms sensors which were 433 Mhz models and pre-programed for 2008 R8. After I installed the tpms sensors, I took the car to a local tire shop where they used Autel tpms tool to activate the sensors. Their tool picked up all 4 sensors and recognized that tpms sensors are compatible with that particular vehicle.

However this year of R8 has no tpms relern or reset procedure after tpms sensor is changed. Car is supposed to autodetect the new sensors after driving for 10-20 minutes. I have been driving the car for 1 week but tpms warning has not gone away. VCDS scan showed that tpms module still has IDs of factory tpms sensors stored and it is trying to communicate with old factory sensors.

1) Do I need to change any other setting than what I did in '17- Instruments' & '65-Tire Pressure' modules to enable tpms functionality?

2) I am wondering if there is a procedure in VCDS where I can force tpms module to 'start looking' for new sensors IDs instead of keep looking for old sensors IDs?

3) Is there any way to update MBVs in the tpms module so that I can restore/flash IDs of new tpms sensors to the tpms module?

Thanks for reading.

Did you put in Autel TPMS sensors? If so, your tire shop should be able to use their Autel TPMS tool to write the IDs your car is expecting into the sensors.

Thanks for replying @JeffYoung . These are non Autel sensors. I installed tpms sensors about a year ago, at that time I did not know if it is even possible to clone tpms sensor ID to generic Autel sensors. But I shall come back to this topic.

I have some more information and few new questions about how my tpms module is behaving.

1) What information is displayed by Measuring Block -016 of tpms module? The reason I am asking is because I noted that value (which I assume is sensor ID) is dynamically changing in Measuring Block -016 even when car is not being driven. When ignition is first turned on, MB-16 shows value of "0.000.000.000" and then after few minutes it changed to "1.502.808.164" with bar value of 2.42 and later it displayed "1.520.760.020" with bar value of 2.60 and in the end it was "1.521.033.749" with bar value of 2.42 . All these values are changing when engine is not even started.
So why IDs and pressure values are changing in MB-016 ? Does MB-016 represent most recently detected tpms sensor ID?

2) The four voltage values being displayed in MB-020 are also dynamically changing. So when I am displaying MB-20 in VCDS, the voltgae 1 and 3 of MB-20 change every 5 to 10 seconds. What do these 4 voltage value represent?

I have posted my Measuring Value Block Map in the first post.

3) Does the 'Adaptation Channel 1' of tpms module need to be set to 1 or zero for normal functioning of tpms module?

4) As a last resort, I may have to clone the current sensor IDs to generic Autel tpms sensors (as suggested in previous post) so that tmps module in the car can recognize these sensors. However I am not sure which Measuring Block value represent what tire location. The tpms module is displaying sensor IDs in Measuring Blocks 3,6,9 and 12 but how would I know if MB-6 represent rear left or front right tire sensor @Dana ?

edit: I found an old post from @Uwe in which has posted this "Normally the order is LF, RF, LR, RR." so I guess this answer the question as of which sensor ID represent which tire location.

@Raindrop afraid I've only dealt with TPMS issues on one of my non-VAG cars, so I don't know how it plays with VCDS.

I think R8 TPMS system and the reset function is in the MMI even on the gen1 vehicles. Press CAR button for MMI then select tire pressure monitoring and store pressures.

I would think if someone coded it out you may need to change adaption channel in MMI to have tpms function come up for the reset.

Also note, depending on how many sets of TPMS sensors were on the car prior I do remember there being an issue where the tpms module could only remember 2 sets. If a 3rd set was fitted it may not recognize it. In which case I believe a replacement tpms module was needed. Unless there is a way to wipe the original ID's. I never tried or care enough to check.

I think R8 TPMS system and the reset function is in the MMI even on the gen1 vehicles. Press CAR button for MMI then select tire pressure monitoring and store pressures.

I have an Audi S5 which has 'Store Tire Pressure' option in MMI so I am familiar with MMI interface.

However in Gen 1 R8, options to set time and reset tpms is accessed by pressing button on wiper control stalk. The Gen 1 refresh R8 cars which have white font display in instrument cluster do have tpms reset option in the menu (there are youtube videos which shows that) however pre-refresh Gen 1 R8 cars with red font display do not have tpms reset option. There are many threads on R8 talk forum looking for such tpms option in pre-refresh Gen 1 R8 and no one has yet posted a photo of such an menu option. Even Autel tpms tool does not tell you to reset tpms in the dash/MMI.

You are right that cars Gen 1 R8 can store tpms sensor IDs for 2 set of wheels, however if you look at the Measuring Block map that I posted in 1st post, MBs 40, 41 & 42 shows that car has only 4 sensors IDs stored. Ross-tech has described a way to reset tpms module of this particular model here which I have tried but still no success. But I am not sure if I need to enable or disable any other option or change adaption channel value for this coding trick to work.

BTW can you please share your opinion as why value of Measuring Block-016 is changing values every few minutes? And what do the voltages displayed in MB-020 represent?

Thanks.

Have you tried changing the coding of TPMS module? Meaning just writing in a different coding temporarily or writing in the same coding again to see if it would make a change?

Adapting TPMS Sensors to System

To adapt new sensors, for example after changing wheels, first ensure that pressures are adequate. Then recode the TPMS. It's probably OK just to put the same coding value that's already there back in, but if in doubt, raise or lower the specified pressures a bit, then restore them to stock. After the module has been recoded, the car must be driven for a minimum of 10 minutes at a speed over 40 km/h (25 mph). Avoid stop-and-go driving.

Most cars using 4F0-907-273-A only show blocks up to ~015–020. Some later software versions expose more, but many groups will simply show “No data available.”

Tip when diagnosing TPMS:
The most useful blocks are usually:

  • 001–004 → actual pressure + temperature

  • 005–008 → sensor IDs (confirm sensors alive)

  • 015–018 → sensor battery life
Those three groups alone can diagnose 90% of TPMS problems.

Displays the decoded RF telegram information from sensors.

Typical fields:

  1. Last telegram type
  2. Sensor wake-up status
  3. Data validity flag
  4. CRC / telegram check result
Purpose:

  • Used when diagnosing communication faults with sensors.

  2. EEPROM status
  3. Last reset cause
  4. Controller diagnostic flag
Purpose:

  • Mainly for factory service diagnostics.

Important NOTE:
On many vehicles with 4F0-907-273-A, VCDS or OBD11 will show “No data available” for blocks 33–40 unless:

  • the module firmware supports extended diagnostics
  • the car is actively receiving sensor messages
  • the scan tool supports UDS extended measuring blocks
  • your exact scan tool (VCDS, OBD11, Autel, etc.)
  • the values you see in blocks 33–40

How to use it

  • Values should increase while driving
  • If one stays 0, that sensor is likely dead.

Block 034 – Signal strength (RF reception)

Shows reception strength from each wheel sensor.

Fields:

  1. FL pressure deviation
  2. FR pressure deviation
  3. RL pressure deviation
  4. RR pressure deviation

  3. Warning active
  4. System fault flag
Examples:

  • 0 = normal monitoring
  • 1 = learning mode

Block 039 – Sensor ID mapping

Shows which sensor IDs are assigned to each wheel.

Fields:

  1. FL sensor ID
  2. FR sensor ID
  3. RL sensor ID
  4. RR sensor ID
Useful when:

  • replacing sensors
  • diagnosing wrong wheel location
  • after tire rotation

Block 040 – Controller diagnostics

Internal controller health information.

Fields usually include:

  1. RF receiver status
  2. EEPROM status
  3. Reset cause
  4. Internal fault flags
These are mainly for factory diagnostics.

Practical diagnostic tip (VCDS):

The three blocks I always check first when fixing TPMS on these cars:

  • Block 001–004 → actual pressure & temperature
  • Block 033 → sensor communication
  • Block 034 → signal strength
If 033 counter isn’t increasing while driving, that sensor is dead or sleeping.

Hope this helps.

On the Phaeton and Continental, measuring block 16 is a scrolling value of transmitted IDs and sending speeds. 01h = normal sending speed; 02h = rapid sending speed (ie: leak detected); 00h = defective sensor. So it keeps changing because it's going through all 5 tyres.

But your part # is the Audi part #, so that's kind of hard to square. (The Phaeton/Continental part #s are 3D0-907-273/3W7-907-273.)

ok the issue is resolved, tpms warning light is now off and new sensors are registered in the module.

I was trying to put tpms module in reset/adaptation mode by changing its coding but it did not work and the reason was that I have set 'Adaptation Channel 1' to 1 instead of 0. I read long time ago on an Audi forum to set 'Adaptation Channel 1' of tpms module to 0 to disable tpms system and set it to 1 to enable it, which was wrong information. However what was happening is that setting its value to 1 put the tpms module to 'test' mode. Therefore the module was not accepting/storing any of new tpms sensor IDs even though Measuring Block-016 was displaying rolling IDs of newly installed sensors. When I saw the rolling values in MB-016 which did not register in the module, it gave me a clue to experiment with changing the value of 'Adaptation Channel 1'.

Here are the steps that I took to fix the tpms issue:

I connected the VCDS cable and started the engine. then I went to TPMS Module-65 and changed 'Adaptation Channel 1' to zero.

Then I changed the coding of the module by one pressure value as described here . This model of Audi R8 does not have option to reset tpms module in MMI/dash so changing the coding of tpms module is trick that is used to place module in reset/adaptation mode.

As soon as I changed coding of module by one digit and clicked 'Do it'; the tpms fault lights in dash went off. I almost gasped when I saw tpms fault lights go off. I exited the module and exited the VCDS and then I went back into tpms module to check on the sensor IDs stored in Measuring Blocks 003, 006, 009 and 012 and noted that value of all 4 IDs were now set to 0.000.000.000.

Then I took the car to 10 minute drive without switching off the engine. By the end of drive, tpms fault lights were still off. I checked the Measuring Blocks again and there were all new sensors IDs stored in the MBs 003, 006, 009 and 012.

I then cleared the faults in Module-65 and switched off the engine. The tpms fault lights have not yet come back.
