Hi all, brand new to ross-tech and just used my brand new HEX-USB+CAN do some basic adaptations since I'm getting 12.5mpg around the city in my 2008 A6 C6 3.2FSI. The only question I had was regarding the fuel pump adaptation, I followed the instructions from http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...WA)#Adaptation

The instructions are:

Fuel Pump
Prerequisites:
Ignition ON
Engine ON
System voltage at least 11.0 V.

[Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 103
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
Wait until Field 4 shows "ADP. O.K.".
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]
Switch Ignition OFF.

Now the fuel pump field 4 never shows ADP.O.K. instead it shows "ADP Run" only when clicking on on/off/next. Are the above instructions correct? Or is the fuel pump continuously adjusting and thats why it never shows ADP.O.K? Because when monitoring vehicle in real time the field 4 will either show OFF or ADP Run. Please advise I'm hoping that the above instructions are incorrect and that I didn't put my fuel pump in some sort of continuous adaptation loop. Thanks in advance!

I don't think this procedure is meant to be used to address poor fuel economy but rather when replacing the fuel pump. Please post a complete AutoScan though, so we can see the details of your car.

Welcome to the forum.

This is a double post and the Adaption link doesn't work in your other post so it may as well be deleted. ;)

As with all problems/query you ALWAY post a full AutoScan of the vehicle in question whether there are any error codes or not, as there is more system info in there. How to post an Auto-Scan

Moving this to Car Repair Support, and the duplicate thread has been deep-sixed.

Hello,

I'm getting 12.5mpg around the city in my 2008 A6 C6 3.2FSI.

- How are calculating the fuel economy?

This Ross-Tech wiki page maybe more applicable to your concerns.
Fuel Trim Info

I don't think this procedure is meant to be used to address poor fuel economy but rather when replacing the fuel pump.

- When replacing the HPFP(High Pressure Fuel Pump), the factory repair manual does not state the need for any adaptations and Andy is correct, this procedure would not be used (if applicable) to correct fuel economy.

Please advise I'm hoping that the above instructions are incorrect and that I didn't put my fuel pump in some sort of continuous adaptation loop. Thanks in advance!

The Ross-Tech wiki page you linked above is specifically for the 2.0l TFSI (AXX/BGB/BPJ/BPY/BWA) engines, some information may or may not apply to other engines.

- You maybe able to try the BS-103 test again, this time see if you can raise the engine rpm a little, if the accelerator pedal has no response, when the Basic Setting is [On], try again, this time depress the brake pedal and hold, while depressing the accelerator pedal to the floor , the ECM should regulate the engine speed and the test should complete. I have not done this in a while so the afore mentioned procedure may not apply.

Hope this helps,

drpeter

Thanks for the replies everyone, this looks like an amazing forum and awesome product! Sorry for posting 2 separate threads.

I will post the AutoScan as soon as I can.

The fuel economy was calculated per the old school miles driven/gallons of fuel, so I didn't use the on board computer for the data.

The idea was to perform throttle adaptation and then I got carried away. There are couple of reasons really why I wanted to perform throttle adaptation, one was due to the poor gas mileage, and the other was due to sluggish response or delay from mashing the pedal to getting a reaction from the engine. This seems to be common problem for the C6 and I have read that throttle adaptation corrects this issue. I should mention that I never noticed this with the car in the 2 years I owned it, mostly because I was doing 99% of driving on the highway, I got a new job thats about 5 miles each way and I'm starting to notice things mentioned above - I mean it could it be possible that 12.5mpg is to be expected for such a short run, but all the research I did came up with 15 mpg as the lowest figure, and according to fueleconomy.gov 18mpg is what this car is supposed to do in the city.

The initial monitoring of the fuel pump operation shows 5BAR and about 22% (I'll post all the details), and this changes when the gas pedal position is changed so clearly everything is working fine, really my only concern was that ADP OK was not being displayed as per the directions. So I thought maybe I screwed up, or the instructions were like mentioned previously for installation of the new pump only.

Five miles each way, starting with the engine cold, and in winter... I hate to say it, but I don't think that 12.5 mpg is indicative of a problem under these circumstances.

Yea Uwe I was starting to guess that too, might need to get a beater around town! Interestingly enough my brother drives 3.9L V8 Lincoln LS and his trips are about 12 miles each way and he is getting about 16mpg. Thats why I was thinking combined with the slow engine response that either my throttle was out of whack or the transmission is not learning.

12 miles each way is a LOT more than 5 miles each way when the trip begins with a cold start in winter.

I would make sure your MAF/IAT/MAP/ECT are functioning correctly and inspect plugs for maybe a leaky injector or the burn quality followed by compression check and leak down.

Check oil sump for fuel contamination by smelling the stick if supported or oil fill area.

and here is what I'm talking about the pump, its constantly adapting or it goes off but it never says ADP OK

So I was concerned that I might have screwed something up or this is actually correct function displayed. Thanks everyone!

Thanks Jack at European Parts, but maybe I wasen't very clear. Outside of what I mentioned before the car works perfectly fine, the kickdown engages properly, its shifts smoothly at takeoff after the 1-2 second delay, the engine has no issues at all that would indicate anything wrong with it other than the mileage and the sluggishness in the city driving. From everything that I read out there as it pertains to C6 and this issue in particular everything points to either throttle adaptation, or looking to see whats the latest version of trans software. Trans software would be my next guess since in the city driving situations the car seems to hold the gears for longer than necessary. So in other words if throttle is out of whack and trans shift points are an issue than I think I'm on the right track.

Sure until it carbons up, from running real rich even inherently stock.........

Run the test in basic settings active in one block 0x01-04-103 ON

You can also select a gear before turning on in a parking lot and give slight gas such as Peter aforementioned.

This is known as forcing a test ADP while in operation and not just idle.......this can also be done in command of other readiness tests.

With the exception of a few such as kick down and TV ETC.

Bojan emailed asking us to confirm or deny if the BS > 103 > [On/Off/Next] > Test Off and ADP Run results were normal.

Although I do not have access to a (4F) 3.2FSI in good working order to test on ...I would not consider that normal. Generally, when a FSI engine uses a G410 LP fuel sensor in conjunction with a G247 HP fuel sensor BS group 103 applies. Basic Setting results such as ADP OK -or- Syst. OK are the most common indications that a test ran and passed successfully.

I would check some of the things mentioned above (such as fuel trim, carbon, cleanliness of TB, etc) and pull the spark plugs, check air filter/maintenance items to see if that resolves the fuel economy or performance. If it looks like the engine is lean you may want to check the low side fuel pressure with a gauge to confirm something close to 6.0 bar (key on, engine off) is reaching the engine compartment. If you test low side fuel pressure at idle it may vary between 5 and 5.5 bar based on the on-time command from the FPCM which is seen in MVB 106.

Thanks Dana, looks like the ADP Run is the normal function for the 3.2FSI Engine

http://forums.ross-tech.com/showthread.php?918-2007-audi-A6-low-fuel-pressure

Scroll down to post #5 - just want to point this out in case anyone else came across my post

I appreciate everyone's help, it doesn't appear that anythings wrong with my car or indicating that there are underlying issues - I ran the fuel pump adaptation by mistake and that resulted in this post because I was looking for clarification. As to the surging from the start this is common issue with the 3.2FSI and I didn't do my homework before looking for possible reasons, and the low fuel econ is to be expected as per Uwe's post because I'm making very short trips and with lower vap point of winter fuel blend what I'm experiencing is the expected 15-20% drop in mpg.

cheers!

That's crazy..........Get ready for a big surprise.
A NostraJackAss Quatrain............

How does the poor engine deal with fuel in the diluted synthetic oil over 10K; & with short baby trips.......?

I hope you take it out on the highway, to burn off the water and vapors in the block weekly.

I will get you started.

Ok thanks for sharing. I have a catch-can, and did a ton of research on synthetic oils to know the many advantages of it and I also send my oil for full chemical analysis every 2nd interval - doesnt cost me anything either.
