Background:
I acquired a 2005 V8 Phaeton a few months ago which had been sitting for more than 2 years. There was significant water infiltration into the cabin. It had only one key, that was stuck in the ignition. I was able to get into the trunk and charge the batteries. Once I connected the batteries the starter engaged, and I immediately knew I had a Kessy issue. I removed it and sure enough it had drowned, and the circuitry was corroded. I was able to remove the key from the ignition. The drowned Kessy (3D0 909 137Gx) is a refurbished Continental. I searched for a replacement and found some with the suffix 137G, but they were rather expensive. Not wanting to spend several hundred dollars on a matching number unit, I decided to try a salvage unit from a 2004 V8 (3D0 909 135M) Siemens VDO, which I got for $125 with shipping. Both the drowned, and donor Kessy, are for keyless entry vehicles.

I was able to obtain the SKC/PIN #s for both units. I installed the donor unit and used VCDS to do the Kessy swapping procedure. Everything seemed to go well with the swap. I was able to use the SKCs to get the donor Kessy accepted by the car; both the VIN and IMMO were transferred into the donor Kessy.

When I inserted the key into the ignition, I did not get the click/clank that I was expecting, and the center dash screen displayed a key with IMMOBIL. ACTIVATED. I then used VCDS to do the key matching procedure. After completing it I am still getting the same screen, and I cannot get the ignition to turn on when I turn the key to the right.

I was able to do a scan (attached) that did not retrieve all of the addresses but might be helpful to find a solution. I don't have a complete history of this car so I'm not sure if other issues may be preventing the swap and/or matching. The Security Status is listed at the bottom of the Auto-scan.

Any guidance or suggestions are welcome. ;)

BTW...I'm a noobie and I don't think I posted my scan correctly. Please bear with me.

The scan that I posted is the complete scan, I did not edit it. Being that I only have one key, that isn't paired to the Kessy, I cannot turn the ignition to the ON position. When I stepped on the brake to wake-up the modules, the only addresses that were displayed are the ones in my posted scan.

I think you cn
I immediately knew I had a Kessy issue. I removed it and sure enough it had drowned,
I would guess that you will have other modules that will have been damaged.

Can you power up Pin 1 DLC ?

This car may be too old to have Terminal 15 on Pin 1 of the DLC.

With a wiring diagram and a bit of graft it should be possible to bring more modules to life. Or learn which ones are dead.

Vehicle will not start because 01 is down, 02 is down, among other modules having faults stored related to central electrics and comfort module as well.If 01 and 02 are down there's no way in hell this vehicle will do anything. ABS is down as well. I think there is more issues from water in this vehicle than OP thinks. Bottom line check all fuses. Clear all faults. Make sure the batteries are fully charged and holding a charge then rescan and post updated log.

Thanks for your replies... I really believe that one main issue I'm having is with the key matching procedure. I could be wrong and it may very well be that there are other modules that are damaged/flooded, etc. It just seems that I'm unable to get the donor Kessy to accept the only original key that I have. As I said in my original post, the Kessy swap looks good to me. Being that I'm a novice I could be completely wrong. The SKCs were accepted and the VIN & IMMO ID were transferred into the donor Kessy.

As far as addresses 01 & 02, I was able to reach those prior to installing the donor. I used a jumper to provide power to terminal #3 on the smaller Kessy plug. Below is the scan that was performed with no Kessy, with jumper installed.

Check information in the kessy module 05. If the kessy took the new information it should show matching vin and immo id in the kessy matching the vehicle. If it does not well then it didnt take any of the new information. Also I would read out the CS from the original kessy and the CS from the donor you have to see if they match.

Thanks for your reply Ziddy,
As I said in previous post(s), the VIN & IMMO ID were successfully transferred from the vehicle into the donor Kessy. As far as the original Kessy is concerned, I cannot access module 05 with that Kessy installed. I can only presume that it is too damaged from being flooded.
BTW...what is CS?

CS is Component Security. It does not change. However If you have the wrong CS in the key it will never be recognized by the vehicle. It would be good to read out data from original kessy eeproms. Make dealer key using that CS.

Also note in some cases when programming keys on Bentley vehicles the key will not take until you put the key in and turn to crank position and hold it there. Have you tried this?

Is the CS stored in the ECU as well? or can it only be retrieved for the original (drowned) Kessy? I might not be able to get into the original.

Thanks for the tip on programming keys on Bentley vehicles. I have not tried turning the key and holding it in the crank position, but I'll give it a try. How long do I hold it, and is there something I should monitor with VCDS to see if that works?

No set amount of time. Once it takes you will hear the steering lock unlock and turn ignition on and try to start the vehicle.

So, I took your advice and I was able to start the vehicle. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and suggestion!
To be completely honest, I wish I would have had someone video me doing the procedure while I was performing the adaptation. I can't recall exactly what I did, nor what data was being displayed on my laptop. I do recall that on previous attempts, before I began the process, that the number of keys adapted was always [1]. I never attempted to change that value because I had only one key. The last time I did it (the one that worked) the keys adapted appeared as [0]. In addition, the After Adaptation Minutes value was [4]. It had always previously displayed as [0]. I waited for that number to count down to zero and then changed the test value from [0] to [1], held the key in the crank position, clicked test and save, and then heard the steering lock clank. Voila!

Once again...Thank you Ziddy!:D

In regard to adaption minutes. Perhaps a wrong pin was entered or the procedure didn't complete correctly, in which case the system is locked out for X amount of time depending on how many times it was attempted. In this scenario you would not be able to adapt unless the lockout counter counted down to zero. Note the counter counts down only with ignition in the on position. This is a fail safe built in from the factory.

Here are the value blocks and what they mean:

Thanks for providing further info, I'm fairly certain that I entered the correct PIN. Just to add some further observations: Once the steering lock released I turned the key to crank, and it started, it ran for 2 seconds and shut off. I tried starting a few more times with the same result. Then on the 4th or 5th try it ran without shutting down.

In addition, I'm getting the following fault in address 05:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 05: Acc/Start Auth. Labels: 3D0-909-13x-05.lbl
Part No SW: 3D0 909 135 M HW: 5WK 470 26
Component: Kessy 6400
Coding: 0131304
Shop #: WSC 31414 000 00000
VCID: 2F3B048E6B05D572271-5160

Subsystem 1 - Part No: 4E0 905 852 D
Component: ELV 1834

1 Fault Found:
00003 - Control Module
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit

Electrical fault in circuit could of been because you have the wiring harness jumped to power it in. This is normal occurence. This fault clear after kessy is connected the usual way without the jumper. Same fault occurs when jumping pin1 and pin16 at DLC when doing AKL or most newer vehicles.

Understood...thanks. That fault keeps popping up after several clears with the new Kessy installed. I never had the jumper and Kessy installed simultaneously. In any event the key has worked to start the vehicle multiple times. Tomorrow, I'll check to see if the keyless entry is working.

I'm posting with a follow-up question to satisfy my curiosity related to the Kessy swapping. So, I was wondering that when one adapts a donor Kessy to a vehicle (as in my case) does the donor Kessy's SKC/PIN update to the vehicle's ECU SKC/PIN number? For example, if the donor has the SKC 00001 and the ECU has SKC 00002, does the donor Kessy adopt the SKC of the ECU as its new SKC?
