I have just swapped transmissions from auto to 5 speed. After reading every forum I could find on the subject, I have not found anyone who has had this problem after performing the swap so I think that it may be somewhat unrelated. The ecu accepted recoding so my instrument cluster now instructs me to depress the clutch to start instead of displaying the shifter position.

There is no response when the accelerator pedal is depressed. :banghead: Also no change in VCDS readings when the pedal is manipulated. It does, however, seem to respond favorably to adaption but nothing changes after the adaption is complete. (Please see the following)

ECU is smoked or TV is bad.

Most likely had codes for OXS Heater shorts before the beloved swap or you damaged one when playing trans swap.

Unplug OXS sensors and see if the TV comes back online via the pedal...........

Cause verse effect or it happens again.


Fuse the tracks ........... which are responsible!

Starter cranks right? Get the S contact in "D" sorted.

Thank you for the quick reply Jack. I will try unplugging the O2 sensors and see what happens.

I will look into the D to S also but yes, it does start and run just fine. Just won't rev above idle. Could the D to S issue possibly be that I have jumped the neutral safety relay?

Are you saying that the Accelerator Pedal Position sensor values do not change when you press the pedal?

If so, get WD, pull ECU harness, check values coming from pedal position sensors with a DVOM while someone presses pedal. If the resistances are within spec and change as the the pedal is pressed, but the ECU doesn't see this, then indeed the ECU is shot. That's a relatively common problem on that generation of ECUs. The way I understand it is the analog inputs are only rated for 5V and not protected against over-voltage. If 12V is applied to any of them, including (for example) if the 12V oxygen sensor heater power gets shorted to the signal coming back from the sensor, then other analog inputs will also go dead.

Sometimes a quick visual inspection of the ECU board will reveal damage you can see.......however, not always.

I am trying to find a wiring diagram and will give it a check as soon as I find one. You are correct. The values do not change when the pedal is pressed. I fear that it's looking more and more like the ecu at this time.

I'm still at work but I had my neighbor unplug the o2 sensors and try running it. No change in pedal response. Still nada.

Bentley repair manuals are fine to use for this year of vehicle, they did supplied the NAR dealers with the same information called AESIS up to about 2005/6.

- You can also have a look here for the Official Factory Repair Information links.

Beyond 2009 model years will need to refer to the erWin websites for the Official Factory Repair Information.

Very helpful! I ended up using erwin from your links. The videos were a nice refresher too! I'm trying to learn how to fully navigate erwin now but I have found the schematics I need. I think I have enough data to do some tests tomorrow.

No issues at all. Aside from a leaky automatic, it ran great. I should say that I have had the neighbor kid helping. I'm not as spry as I used to be. Lord knows what he might have done as I didn't watch the whole time. It should have worked with no issues from all that I have read about doing this swap. One thing that I know of was that he wired the main positive alternator lead to ground on the starter. Fortunately it didn't fry the alternator. I don't see any obvious link from that to the current issue though. Perhaps he got rough with the o2 sensor wiring. I understand that is a common cause of this sort of problem is caused by shorting the higher voltage heater wire to the low voltage wire and blasting the ecu. Could be he dropped the accelerator pedal in a bucket of water for all I know though.

Again, sorry for the slow reply. I didn't get a notice of reply in my email and whenever I checked the thread, I didn't look for a second page.
