Hey everyone,

Since the temperatures recently dropped (even down to –30 °C), my battery started acting up again, so I wanted to share the story and hear your thoughts.

I bought the car on 4 Nov 2024. It drove perfectly, no obvious issues, and I regularly used the auxiliary heater just like on my previous cars.

One day my wife drove about 200 km to visit relatives, parked the car overnight, used the aux heater in the morning — and the battery was completely flat. Road assistance helped, and on 20 Nov 2024 I replaced the original OE battery with a Moll AFB 76 Ah battery. The battery center recommended the Moll instead of a Varta replacement (previous spec E39, now A7). It was installed, coded, and everything seemed fine.

Fast-forward about a year. When the temperature dropped to –20 °C / –30 °C, the same issue appeared again — flat battery. I charged it fully, drove for a few weeks, and again… flat. That surprised me, because my driving and usage habits haven’t changed: similar engine class, even a stronger alternator than my previous cars, and the same aux-heater usage pattern.

I contacted the battery seller. They checked the battery and said it was undercharged, recommending an “old-school” transformer charger overnight to bring it back to full health. Meanwhile, I visited my old workshop and during a chat they mentioned they’ve seen similar issues with the same Moll AFB batteries, and they actually decided to stop offering AFB as a replacement for AGM, since in practice AFB behaves closer to EFB than AGM.

When I told this again to the battery seller, their response was basically: “You are using the battery incorrectly.”

Looking at Moll’s own documentation:
  • On battery testers, select EFB (or SLI/WET if EFB is not available).
  • AFB is marketed as an AGM replacement.
  • When registering the battery in the vehicle, register it as AGM.
  • For external charging, use EFB/SLI/WET charging mode (AGM mode also works if needed).

So now I’m a bit confused. If the battery should be coded as AGM in the car, but charged externally using EFB settings, it really makes you wonder whether the vehicle’s charging strategy is actually ideal for this battery. Why not code it as EFB in the car as well?

Has anyone else experienced similar behavior with Moll AFB batteries replacing OE AGM units, especially in very cold climates?

It's worth noting that any quality auto battery should last a minimum of 2-3 years. Most will last longer IME. Assuming that your charging system has been tested and confirmed to be functioning properly, the issue is likely the battery - as long as there isn't some electrical draw when the vehicle is not in use which can kill any battery.

From what I have read... AFB and EFB are basically the same meaning that they are "enhanced" FLA (std. Flooded Lead Acid) batteries that have a longer life in start-stop instances over standard FLA batteries. They are not even close to a quality AGM battery however for durability. They are designed as a financial mid-point of some sort between FLA and AGM batteries. In other words they are designed to save car makers money over an AGM battery. AFB/EFB are typically considered "entry level" batteries for start-stop use in light duty vehicles.

As far as charging goes AFB/EFB batteries having slightly different lead composition and construction which generally allows them to accept a faster charge over an FLA battery without damage. This is why they can be set to AGM charging in the vehicle. Some aftermarket battery chargers can use excessive voltage on AGM batteries so using EFB/SLI prevents battery damage where as the actual vehicle charging is regulated to not over-volt AGM batteries but allow faster charging over a std. FLA battery.

Exactly, which was my point but I have seen a few name brand FLA batteries over the years that died within 3 years. My AGM batteries typically last 6-8 years and then I replace them just because time is running out. Some of my AGMs are still going after 10+ years. Using a quality microprocessor controlled 3-stage constant connection battery charger also extends the life of any battery in vehicles that are not driven regularly, which leads to gradual discharge and shortens the battery's life due to sulfation.

For whatever reason some brands don't value their reputation or they are oblivious to the cost of selling inferior products. With the internet the world has changed. Sooner than later consumers learn of the problems and sales drop like a rock.

It's also worth noting that many brands are produced by a few battery makers in a particular country. A brand name sold in Urrup as well as the U.S. or elsewhere may actually be produced by two or more different companies using different battery design and construction, resulting in different quality levels and performance.

Our infrequently used loan car Passat 3C is now on its fourth warranty replacement Varta AGM in the space of just over a year BUT the 3C does seem to have a habit of eating batteries. I have left it with a remote amp tester on and kept an eye on it for days and seen nothing happen, then suddenly it is so dead I have to use the GB170 NOCO boost in override mode and another jump pack together before it will turnover. ONCE, I did catch the second fan motor slowly moving for a few seconds and it stopped. When I get chance, I am going to pull the controller fuse and then leave it for a few weeks.

A battery can go flat without being bad but 4x actual bad batteries in a year is very unusual. That definitely sounds like a production/QC issue. Finding intermittent electrical draws that can make a battery go flat is frustrating IME.

I would too - Especially in a car that is regularly used.
I have a number of cars that are infrequently used. Examples:

- A 2013 Tiguan that lives at our cabin. It has less than 25,000 miles on it. It has had the original battery replaced once, when it was about 8 years old. The replacement, an Interstate branded battery, is still in it.

- A 2016 Golf R. Less than 5000 miles on her. Original battery.

The trick here is that I'll connect up a charger to them every couple of months if they're not being used. I don't trust "battery maintainers" that are left connected continuously.

- A 2013 Tiguan that lives at our cabin. It has less than 25,000 miles on it. It has had the original battery replaced once, when it was about 8 years old. The replacement, an Interstate branded battery, is still in it.

- A 2016 Golf R. Less than 5000 miles on her. Original battery.

The trick here is that I'll connect up a charger to them every couple of months if they're not being used. I don't trust "battery maintainers" that are left connected continuously.

Good quality microprocessor controlled "smart" maintenance chargers are fine being connected 24/7/365 IME. The reason why it's better to use one of these when a vehicle isn't used frequently is because all lead acid batteries sulfate when they are not maintained at full charge. The sulfation lowers the actual quantity of charge the battery will be able to accept, so it gets weaker over time when not fully charged.

Batteries will self-discharge 1-2% per month on average when not in use or on a maintenance charger. If you have an alarm or audio system or other electrical load that does not disconnect when the battery voltage drops to some voltage above 12v then this can run the battery flat over an extended time.

Several years ago I purchased a number of name brand 24/7/365 "smart" 12v chargers and tested their operation. The biggest difference that I measured was their "float" voltage. Some were too high and some not high enough to properly keep the batteries in my vehicles fully charged. The bulk and absorption stage voltages were fine. I returned the chargers that I felt IME did not meet the needs of my batteries.

Many battery mfgs. list the desired "float" voltage for their batteries which can vary by lead chemistry. Some AGM batteries like Optima and Dynasty prefer a higher float voltage (up to 13.8v), to maintain full charge. It's also useful to have a smart charger with temperature compensation because as battery temp drops internal resistance increases so you need a higher voltage when charging a battery that is for instance outside in 32 F temps vs. the same battery inside at 70 F.

BTW, trickle chargers and "smart" chargers are not the same. Trickle chargers that are NOT accurately voltage controlled for "float" charging can over-volt and kill a battery if left connected all the time - contrary to some advertising claims.
