Intermittent P0016 on CAGB 2.0 TDI (Manual) – Flashing Glow Plug Light Under Load

Hi all,

Looking for some guidance on an intermittent cam/crank correlation issue.

Vehicle details:
  • Audi / VW 2.0 TDI
  • Engine code: CAGB
  • Gearbox: 6-speed manual
  • Mileage: ~270,000 km

Fault code:
  • P0016 – Bank 1: CMP (G40) / Crankshaft (G28) – Incorrect Correlation
  • Logged as Intermittent – Confirmed
  • High fault frequency

Symptoms:
  • Car starts and drives normally
  • No rough idle or slow starting
  • No permanent MIL
  • Flashing glow plug (coil) light only under certain load conditions (acceleration / higher load

Relevant history:
  • Timing belt and associated components replaced around 2022/23
  • Since then, car has covered a reasonable mileage with no major drivability issues
  • No consistent boost-related fault codes present
Observations:
  • P0016 is present even when the car feels fine
  • The glow plug light appears to be triggered dynamically under load rather than constantly
Questions:
  1. On CAGB manuals, can a marginal torsion value (still “within spec”) realistically cause:
    • Intermittent P0016
    • Flashing glow plug light under load?
  2. Is checking and fine-adjusting camshaft torsion value the correct next diagnostic step before chasing sensors or wiring?
  3. Any recommended target torsion value for CAGB manuals based on real-world experience?
  4. Anything specific to log in VCDS (measuring blocks / advanced values) to confirm correlation deviation during load?

It is not a Glow Plug Light anymore. In the old days it was but now it is used for many other reasons !!!

The ECU does not care about that !! Timing is out today !!

Can you post invoices of the parts used and where they came from ??

My fiancee's A5 2.0 TFSI cabrio also has a CMP sensor issue, enough for a permanent check engine light. Just going to get the CMP sensor changed at next service since the only effect seems to be slow starting.

Not testing it first then ? Perhaps the Phase Wheel has swarf all over it is just one thought ??

Don't have the invoices but it was a Gates Timing Belt & Water Pump Kit

*Also have a new Cam Position Sensor, may as well install when am there

The valve timing is out, the Gates full belt and pump kit number for a CAGB is KP15648XS-1

Hi Crasher, appreciate your input.

Any idea how this would happen ? I changed the belt/accessories and used the correct timing kit to line everything up ? Turned the engine over a couple times and everything was good. This was back in 22/23 albeit.

Would putting a new belt kit on be the best option ?#

*Only thing I didn't do was counter hold the camshaft sprocket anticlockwise when tightening up bolts as shown below, however all was aligned ok*

It happens to the best of us, you have to go back in and peg and plate it again. The counter hold anti-clock technique makes a lot of difference. Unless I can turn the engine over by hand, plate the crank, pin the cam pulley and pump without any fiddling, I won’t proceed.

Ill tear down and install new timing kit, ensuring i counter hold the cam sprocket.

Can you explain why the counter hold is important ? Workshop manual doesn't give much detail.

takes the slack out the belt between HPFP & camshaft sprocket so correct tension can be applied.
