Not much going on for the J403 compressor relay:
J403 relay was replaced with new, same issue. Tech and I go over testing wiring harness and everything is 101% to factory design and electric motor for pump does operate via control of the J403 relay. Powers/grounds for J197 are load tested and good. Suspect bad J197.... used unit purchased and get the same issue.
I suspect the J197 has some sort of logic that goes like this.. I want to run the pump, so I power the relay... relay looks good electrically... now I expect to see a pressure change.... I don't see a pressure change and the relay looks good electrically... therefore the relay has a "Mechanical Failure". And it seems all of this happens quickly, so the net effect is you may think the pump never kicked in when in fact it does, but very briefly.
So maybe a bad pump or valve block at play here? By chance the shop has a 2012 A8 parts car, I was able to verify it has the same part number valve block. The tech swapped over the valve block and that fixed the issue in this case. I could see this just as well been due to a failed pump as well.
Hopefully this will help others from getting stuck on a phantom relay issue (after verifying relay and wiring is good).

------------------------------7 Faults Found-------------------------------Not much going on for the J403 compressor relay:
J403 relay was replaced with new, same issue. Tech and I go over testing wiring harness and everything is 101% to factory design and electric motor for pump does operate via control of the J403 relay. Powers/grounds for J197 are load tested and good. Suspect bad J197.... used unit purchased and get the same issue.
I suspect the J197 has some sort of logic that goes like this.. I want to run the pump, so I power the relay... relay looks good electrically... now I expect to see a pressure change.... I don't see a pressure change and the relay looks good electrically... therefore the relay has a "Mechanical Failure". And it seems all of this happens quickly, so the net effect is you may think the pump never kicked in when in fact it does, but very briefly.
So maybe a bad pump or valve block at play here? By chance the shop has a 2012 A8 parts car, I was able to verify it has the same part number valve block. The tech swapped over the valve block and that fixed the issue in this case. I could see this just as well been due to a failed pump as well.
Hopefully this will help others from getting stuck on a phantom relay issue (after verifying relay and wiring is good).
