Lets party,:thumbs: ok, so looking at the link address above this is thread 5303. but looking at the forum statistics it is #5000.

so, maybe i will make this a inquiry.

for the 2002 new beetles, do they show freeze frames? i have the box check to show freeze frames....but they dont show. is it because the car doesnt support Can bus?

here is my auto scan,,,

I was hoping to see what the coolant temp was at time of fault 17704 - Error in Mapped Cooling System (check Temp-Sensor and Thermostat)

P1296 - 35-10 - - Intermittent

i cleared the codes, but after went for a drive, and this code came back after 45 mins. engine was cool when i scanned it again. so it shows intermittent,, unles its a wiring issue or faulty sensor or thermastat

found my answer in Ross-tech manual.....

The Display Freeze Frame Data checkbox adds Freeze Frame data for Fault Codes on control modules using the KWP-2000 protocols. Note: Not all control modules support this freeze-frame data. As a rule of thumb, cars which were re-designed after 2003 will likely have some control modules which support it, and older designs will not. There's no harm in leaving this enabled in any case. However, un-checking it can make the results less cluttered in a scan which contains many fault codes.

Check in Generic OBD-II mode. These older ECUs sometimes have some freeze-frame data available there, but the original VW KW1281 protocol didn't support it at all.

So with my wife's 2002 VW NB 2.0L , we can drive for about 30-40 Miles then check engine lights up. No change to how the engine runs.

I scanned the car the first time, got

17704 - Error in Mapped Cooling System (check Temp-Sensor and Thermostat)
P1296 - 35-00 -

cleared codes and they stayed away. but after driving aways light can back on. but now with another code

temp is a little lower then running temp 60-90 degrees. so would that be the thermostat is stuck open?
and should it be in a closed loop?

The thing is, the freeze-frame data that the ECU has there is for the P0420 CAT code, not the cooling system code.

For the cooling system code, I would monitor (or even log) the engine temperature for a nice long drive, starting from cold, to see what you can see.

Is the ECT Green in color and not Black as per TSB supersession?

Most likely a bad T-stat, however, a water pump can spin on impeller intermittently.

When changing or inspection of T-stat in boiling water pot, observing temp open and close; ........check the impeller with finger, from access to back of pump behind the T-stat.

Pssst you could try the new G13 coolant ............
However, I don't think the money warrants it........
G12 can be had on the cheap, because of gravity of stupidity to have something new. :p

Check for scales or solids contaminating the return line to Expansion tank or any flange points and verify the system is actually sealed under PSI.........cold and HOT!

I will take it for a spin tomorrow and log temp ... what would be the best way to monitor the engine for tells on the 16804 - Catalyst System; Bank 1
P0420 - 35-00 - Efficiency Below Threshold? pls and thank you

I was at the VW dealer today to order a hatch door opener switch(it was FUBAR) so i order a new thermostat too, if i have to drain the coolant and tear the old one out, for the $26 i may aswell have a new thermostat and new coolant. see if that helps.

On the coolant side..lol.. should i open the can of worms on using "New Prestone® All Makes All Models Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant"instead of the VW G12?

You may get lucky and maybe the thermostat will help the cat... I would log block 046 and watch on road test at about 2-2200 rpm.

Get cat hot in third gear field 2 of at least 700c or higher to burn off impurities.

I run oven cleaner at forward OXS location then rinse and sometimes this also may wake the surface area needed to get the exothermic reaction going.

Personally, I would not. But if you do... Flush the entire syyetm with lots and lots of water first. Using a different type of coolant calls for getting ALL the old coolant out. Ask the VW owners in the 1990s who "upgraded" from G11 to G12 what happens when they didn't do an adequate job of this.

lol, i was just throwing it out there to get a reaction from Jack.:D just seen on other sites a thread 10 pages long about guys arguing back and forth about it. i am going to use the special VW juice. i knew that i would have to flush the whole system if i changed coolant and wanted to avoid it. unless their is lots of crap in the old coolant.

I keep examples of stupid shit that happens to insides of engines to show why not to do this. This subject is at the head of the list. After milk time maybe I will bring to show and tell if we can play buliding blocks.

Looks like it was a faulty thermostat. Old one wasn't closing tight. Put new one in and no engine light after a tank of gas.
