Hello, everyone. I'm back. You might remember me from the ABS module issue you helped me resolve nearly a year ago (link). Time for something new...
After replacing and coding the ABS module, everything was running fine for several months. It started having a slightly rough idle around September/October, and I replaced the spark plugs in late November. It had been a long time and many miles since I had done it previously. The old plugs had some carbon buildup and 2 or 3 had some oil on the threads. I gapped the new plugs (Bosch iridium) per spec, and replaced the coils in the same order they were in originally. Idle seemed to improve some. I got an oil change and tire rotation, and the tire pressure light came on (which seems to be pretty standard after a rotation and inflation). I cleared it, and everything seemed fine for a little over a week.
On December 8, my son was leaving a friend's house when he called me to tell me that an electronic stabilization error popped up, the car became hard to steer (the engine had spontaneously turned off), and the dash was lit up like a Christmas tree. The engine would not restart. I checked all the fluids, and everything was in the normal range, and I didn't find any leaks. When AAA arrived about an hour later to tow it home, the engine started right up. They brought it home on the flatbed and parked it in the driveway under the car's own power. I plugged in VCDS, and did an auto-scan. I repeatedly cleared codes until all but one was gone. The tire pressure light was still on, and the button in the glove compartment would not clear it. A couple more attempts with VCDS, and I finally got it to clear. Maybe it was a one-time fluke. (It wasn't.) I didn't get a chance to post my story before leaving for vacation, and I didn't bring my VCDS laptop with me.
The car ended up sitting in the driveway for nearly a month. We returned from vacation, and this past Monday (January 5) I took it for a test drive it to the grocery store in our neighborhood a little over 2 miles away. I made it to the end of my street (150 yards) when it happened again:
I'm thinking the engine control module has kicked the bucket, or maybe I've got a bad circuit breaker, fuse, or relay. Any advice/direction on where to begin to identify the problem would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully it's not the ABS module, but at least I know what to do about that now.

- Error: stabilization control (ESC)
- Engine shuts off.
- Gauge cluster lights up like a Christmas tree.
- Car won't restart. Message says to press brake pedal. (I was.)
I'm thinking the engine control module has kicked the bucket, or maybe I've got a bad circuit breaker, fuse, or relay. Any advice/direction on where to begin to identify the problem would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully it's not the ABS module, but at least I know what to do about that now.
