Is It possible with this device to at least view the measuring blocks or any form of reading of the Steering Angle Sensor for my vehicle VW Crafter (Mercedes hybrid) 2012.

It is really frustrating that this is the only error that I now have and I cannot get anything helpful from this device to determine if it is infact a defective sensor.

Can anyone help with how I can get these readings please?

or at least can someone let me know of a diagnostic scanner that can actually provide me with the readings I need to determine if I actually have a sensor problem or if can just be re-calibrated?

Regards
Serenity

here's my latest scan....

ACM stands for "Adaptive Cruise Control Module" in the context of the VW Crafter's ESP system. It is responsible for managing the adaptive cruise control features of the vehicle.

forums.ross-tech.com uk-mkivs.net

  • ACM stands for Adaptive Cruise Control Module.
  • The ACM is responsible for managing the adaptive cruise control system in vehicles, including the VW Crafter.
  • The fault code 5731 indicates an issue with the ACM, specifically related to the development monitor E. This may affect the vehicle's performance and safety features, including the Electronic Stability Program (ESP).
Understanding the ACM's function can help in diagnosing issues related to the ESP and overall vehicle control systems.

As far as I can see from the data I have available, the answer is: No.

Thank you for the courtesy of replying to me. I now get to add Ross-Tech VCDS diagnostic ? scanner? (that does not work on my VW crafter van) to the pile of useless diagnostic scanners in my collection rubbish bin, I have 5 useless scanners now and I can never get my money or my time back. I must've bought into the idea of buying it from the super duper salesman and it does not live up to it's promises. :(

Your car is a mess of Mercedes and VAG components. VCDS is a VAG specific tool and If VCDS cant extract detailed data from the Mercedes bits don't blame the tool. I presume your friendly VW Crafter dealer can scan the vehicle somehow maybe ?

Oh wow! Thanks for your response as well! you say "VCDS is a VAG specific tool" I happen to own a VOLKSWAGEN! VAG stands for Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft (VW public limited company), which is the official name of the Volkswagen Group in German incase you didnt know. The tool is not complete, It cannot read my VW CRAFTER VAN (2012), I was lead to believe that this thing read VW Crafter / LT3 (which is what my van is) and be a useful tool that could reprogram modules and read them when infact it only works on less than ten percent if that, why dont they put that into their literature, before preying upon gullible people like myself! and why bother saying it can help at all, when it is next to useless. I have every reason to be annoyed about this, it cost me alot of money and it has to go in the bin! you presume far too much! Owners like me absolutely have to have something that can read everything, because these insane sensors break down frequently with false information. There are safety issues involved here, anyone who buys a vehicle badged VW should be able to analyse and fix absolutely everything on it, not just 10% of them.

I understand how frustrating it can be working on these "Frankencars" due to their mix of technologies.

Yes I know what VAG stands for. You happen to own a car with a VW badge but just because VW put a badge on a Mercedes and stuffs a few of its own bits in it does not make it fully compliant with normal VAG standards. In these days of electronic cars with maker specific coding and badge engineering by all makers (which has gone on for ever) you can get stuck as none of the 3rd party providers can affords to fully develop the software you are looking for. I am not even sure VW have developed it either for their dealer system which is why I suggested you talk to your dealer especially if you believe it is safety related. The fact that VCDS has a specific translation to talk to the different addresses used in the Crafter and can talk fully to all the actual VW modules and can do the basic interrogation of the Mercedes modules is in itself I think remarkable.

I suggest that you also don't buy the current Ford / VW Amarok also. If you don't want the VCDS and have not used all the VINs you will be able to sell it and recover most of your investment. If you have 5 useless devices it suggests you need to do more research before putting down your hard earned cash so you understand better what you are buying

The VW badge on the front doesn't mean it's a VW.
VW have a history of badge engineering their commercials -
- The LT 35 going back to 1996 was a Mercedes Sprinter with VW engine & immobiliser.
- The first gen Crafter carried on the partnership with MB, but the diagnostics seem to be a steaming pile of systems, to the point that systems such as ABS may be VAG or MB supplied.
- The 2nd gen Amarok is a Ford Ranger in all but the name.
- The T7 Transporter is a Ford Transit Custom from the ground up (although to add confusion, I believe the T7 Multivan is still a true VW).

It's worked both ways though - the first gen Ford Galaxy was a VW Sharan (except the petrol engines), and the latest Ford Transit Connect / Tourneo Connect are the VW Caddy.
Plus the new Explorer and Capri (yes, I know), are built on the VW MEB platform, so essentially an ID.4/5 / Skoda Enyaq / Audi Q4 e-tron with a Ford body slapped on top.

It's VW you should be mad at here, as it's their commercial choices that have created the issue, and not the responsibility of Ross-Tech, who are after all an aftermarket-tool supplier, and sadly not privy to VW's decision making.

I don't know who you bought VCDS from, but we and the other UK resellers make a point of noting on our listings that certain models won't work - I'd be surprised if the NZ distributors don't do something similar.
As RGH0 said though, if you've already binned 4 other tools due to this vehicle, maybe a little more research before you buy would serve you better. You'd have had the same answers if you'd asked the same question in the Pre-Sales Support section, had you asked... you know... pre-sale?

The solution is for Ross Tech to add the missing data to make the device work properly for all VW vehicles regardless of any of these VW vehicles being 'hybrid'. If a vehicle is sold by VW and carry's the badge all of that vehicle's diagnostic data should be available for the consumer, why is there no access to this data??? should there not be a court case about this for safety issues? as you say it is not even known if a dealer will have all of the information for the vehicle. Surely this is outrageous in this day and age!

Is it this same problem as the John Deere case and their diagnostic scanners that Farmers cannot get access to the diagnostic software they need to fix their tractors. Farmers Are Hacking Their Tractors Because of a Right to Repair Ban

You appear to be under a misunderstanding that Ross-Tech have some obligation under "right to repair laws" which I don't think exist in any meaningful way in Australia or NZ in any case and Ross-Tech have no obligation under anyhow.

Ross-Tech is an independent after market diagnostic software provider and they provide the absolutely best solution for VAG vehicles. The fact that there are some vehicles with a VW badge that are not true VAG vehicles is a problem for purchasers of these vehicles like you but not something that is economically feasible for Ross-Tech to address beyond what they have done already which I personally believe is more than can be expected

You cant even purchase a f***ing repair manual from VW now that they shut down private access to Erwin. So please focus your outrage and legal demands at you local VW distributor that sold you this vehicle with all its inherent diagnosis and repair challenges created from their badge engineering.

I have spent 50 years working on Lotus cars and Lotus raided the parts bins of half the British car industry so i understand the issue of "Frakencars". At least the issues with old Lotus are mechanical rather than computer based so a good set of measuring instruments and little mechanical engineering can diagnose most issues

So what ? OP @Serenity owns a Volkswagen - The name Mercedes will not be anywhere in his title / finance / documentation.

Ross-Tech is an independent after market diagnostic software provider and they provide the absolutely best solution for VAG vehicles

That may be true !! But only if ODIS cannot give him what he wants from the tool !!

If ODIS can give him SAS data then clearly VCDS is Not absolutely the best for @Serenity

If a vehicle is sold by VW and carry's the badge all of that vehicle's diagnostic data should be available for the consumer, why is there no access to this data??? should there not be a court case about this for safety issues?

You are governed by the country you choose to live in !! Go be a good law abiding Citizen !!

That or make a case for a change in the law !! Good luck - I support you !

as you say it is not even known if a dealer will have all of the information for the vehicle. Surely this is outrageous in this day and age!

@Serenity
If the info on SAS that you want is not on the dealer tool ODIS then it is unfair / not reasonable for you to expect it from an after market tool including VCDS !

If the module strategy does not deliver that SAS data to the OBD socket then you cannot have it !! No one can !! So stop the tantrums !!

If ODIS has it then talk to Rosstech / VCDS and I reckon they will step up !! In my experience, 20 years, they display good morals and ethics.

I was lead to believe that this thing read VW Crafter / LT3 (which is what my van is) and be a useful tool that could reprogram modules and read them when infact it only works on less than ten percent if that, why dont they put that into their literature, before preying upon gullible people like myself! and why bother saying it can help at all, when it is next to useless. I have every reason to be annoyed about this,
How long you had VCDS ?

How much use have you had from it ? On any Car /Van ?

If you really have been mis sold then put it in an envelope and post it back, tracked, insured to the Vendor. Ask for a refund as it is not fit for your purpose !

This now a case between you, the consumer, and your vendor !! Shoot an email documenting conversations - Written and Verbal.

@Uwe has contributed on this / your thread and quite likely @Bruce will come across it.

I dont agree with some of the replies you have had from @Mike@Gendan nor @RGH0

I'd be surprised if the NZ distributors don't do something similar.
Surprised and sure are 2 different things !!

I just read that twice !

I think you will find the Mercedes name or part numbers on lots of the components on the vehicle and on the documentation relevant to those components (if you can get it.) He owns something with a VW badge sold by a VW dealer the "So What" is that does not make it a Volkswagen for maintenance purposes anymore than the current Amarok is a Volkswagen and you need to buy a Ford scan tool for it.

I never said VCDS was the best tool in this case. I said its the best tool for true VAG vehicles in general and to criticize Ross-Tech for not providing full coverage of some badge engineered vehicles is totally unfair in my personal opinion. I asked him to talk to his dealer to find out if they can support it via ODIS as i don't know what they can or cant do

Ross-Tech: VCDS Tour - Crafter / LT3 Functions
I just read that twice !
yes, Thank you for what you have written, those points are what I am trying to clarify. I am not sure why I am getting such a hostile reaction to my query from the other members on this thread, Usually when a customer points out an issue the provider welcomes that feedback and works to find a solution to that issue or discusses the situation in depth with you. but to just come right out and blame the customer is extremely off putting and makes me think that there is more of a problem going on here, like a protectionist racket.. I am sorry I ever bought their tool which may be useful to others but is absolutely no use to me. the website says that Ross tech fully intends Other functions such as Measuring Values, Output Tests, and Basic Settings will be added in future versions, when are the future measuring values going to be available? or is their hostility because there is no such intention to include these at any stage in the future so there is actually no solution in the end and in being mislead I was ripped off!

Let us be clear on this and my thoughts seem to align with yours.

These functions that you desire - Measured Values, Output tests & Basic Settings can NOT be added by VCDS if the ECU does not transmit them to the OBD 16 Pin Diagnostic Port.

Thank you again for your reply, okay so can this be confirmed then by those in the know that it is a Ross-tech hardware issue and will never be resolved? I would like a working device here.. if it is possible. but I have every reason to feel misled at the moment.

Other functions such as Measuring Values, Output Tests, and Basic Settings will be added in future versions, when are the future measuring values going to be available?

If these features are not available to the dealer via ODIS, the official Factory Machine then it is not reasonable to expect VCDS to be able extract something that is JUST NOT there !!

If they are available on ODIS then it is reasonable for you to expect them from a VCDS or an explanation as to why not! In that case I would say that you reach out to @Uwe

VCDS is not ODIS - VCDS will not be able to do anything that requires an Online Connection to VAG !

Component Protection CP
Immobiliser
Software Version Management SVM - to name a few !

And then the sparks at VCDS made VCDS do some stuff that the dealer with ODIS cannot / will not do !!

Someone with ODIS and YOUR van attached to it can answer that !

And it is a software issue not hardware !! The software in your van which was your choice purchased with your money. Your wish to buy a VAG Product !!

One day VW may decide to add the diagnostic functions that you require to ODIS - Then, only then, you can make the reasonable request for VCDS to add it !

fine, but Ross-tech have put it on their site that they will be adding it in the future. So they wouldn't surely say that if it was not at all available surely?
