2013 VW Tiguan P0121/EGR Problems

Hello, I've been having issues over the last few months with P0121. I've recently purchased 2013 Tiguan 2.0 TDI. I took it to a shop 2 months ago and they said the throttle body was caked and they cleaned it out. This resolved the issue for a couple of months, but it is now beginning to re-occur. I did monitor it on VAG DPF for sometime and I noticed that our DPF also seems to be filling up pretty fast. Much faster than my 2010 golf we previously had. I also noticed that the EGR valve always showed at 60% at idle in VAG DPF. I recently decided to get VCDS and although I'm almost entirely clueless, i did manage to check the output value for throttle valve position and it shows 92.5% at idle. Decreases as I accelerate. My understanding is that this is not normal. Any reccomendations? I'm thinking I may be able to do the throttle body clean again myself. Would an adaptation help any, or is my EGR shot?

I would be intrigued to see how the garage cleaned the EGR valve out on your engine. It's tucked up behind the rear of the engine partially under the DPF with a large cooler attached. I've never ever seen anyone clean one on that engine especially on a Tiguan as the transfer case is also in the way which makes it several hours work just to get it out never mind clean it and refit it. What did they charge you to do the job ?

The fault code above is for the throttle body located at the front of the engine on the plastic inlet manifold. It's likely restricted with carbon build up. Remove the metal pipe going into the manifold and check for carbon - or take pics and post here.

Sorry you're right I got mixed up. It was the throttle body they cleaned. They showed me before and after picture, it was bad. But the issue came back within a couple months. I check my DPF in VAG DFP and although we don't do a tonne of long drives, it's always regenning and we always have more than half a tank. Just some basics I learned with my golf

Well they only charged me £60 for the throttle body clean(No diagnosis fee), and it did resolve the issue temporarily. Also, as mentioned, the throttle body was very caked up and did actually need cleaning anyway. It seems you are suggesting that I choose a different shop next time, that there is a deeper issue. I just typed P0121 into Youtube and there's about 100 videos on how to clean the throttle body and nothing else.

I mention EGR just from my own Googling as my idle valve positions seem to indicate a problem. I'm no expert, maybe that's a TPS issue not an EGR issue.

I forgot to mention but the error code also started to give us stop start issues. When we stopped in traffic, the engine would stop, but when you put your foot back on the clutch, the engine would not restart. Told us to restart manually with the key. This issue also resolved with the throttle body clean and has not yet returned.

If that were in my workshop I would be studying intensely the Throttle Pedal and Flap signals back pinned at the ECU with a scope and looking to recreate the fault and identify the culprit.

From that point the fix is imminent !

I would say that is not abnormal !! It is showing 92.5 % Closed at idle so 17.5% Open !

However that 92.5% is not a measurement. It is a calculation of the 2 signals. You want to be looking at the raw data not the calculation !!


The calculation can only be of use when there are no faults in the car !!

I am just beginning to look at these things in VCDS but itll be a while before I'm anywhere close to competent. I'm gonna take it into a different garage and hope they do a better job than the previous one. They offered to bypass the EGR when I collected the car, bit of a red flag considering it could be a different issue entirely as you have said.

On a positive note, I did manage to recode my battery woth VCDS which I why I purchased it. Saved me £50 so it's already paying for itself. Though the ross tech video on youtube wasnt much help, I had to navigate to channel 4 to find the drop down and just change the AH and change one digit onthe serial

If the throttle valve is cleaned in an unapproved way, such as with compressed air or in an ultrasonic tank, the chemical can be forced into the motor and contaminate the potentiometer. I would fit a new TB 03L 128 063 T, £333.60 retail inc. much less aftermarket such as a Conti/VDO 2803605001302

The word "Possible" is used 6 times in that document (one Page)

The word "Pedal" is in the DTC but not in that Document - Something not right !! Discrepancies of that nature can and do cause chaos.


My way of dealing with that fault, I am certain, will lead me to a first time fix !!

In my mind there is no alternative, if there is room for improvement in my technique then I am listening !

If that were in my workshop I would be studying intensely the Throttle Pedal and Flap signals back pinned at the ECU with a scope and looking to recreate the fault and identify the culprit.

I would for sure add an amp Clamp to look at the motor along side its Command which is likely PWM driven.

I'll add to the special notes at the bottom that there was a recall for the EGR or something on 2013 Tiguan's, I only know this because I spent a couple weeks looking into my issues before this post. This would surely have been dealt with a long time ago by the previous/original owner.

I also found this on the tiguan forums that I'd forgotten about. His stop/start issue followed by P0121 is very similar to what was happening to me. I think we need a petrol, but I'm hoping it's a different issue because weve not long had the car and im very mindful of checking my DPF often and it's not having issues yet.

I'll add to the special notes at the bottom that there was a recall for the EGR or something on 2013 Tiguan's, I only know this because I spent a couple weeks looking into my issues before this post. This would surely have been dealt with a long time ago by the previous/original owner.

How about we pay little attention to a bloke who so far hasn't fixed the fault, or got the fault fixed in his car !!
