I’m in the midst of a number of retrofits for my NAR 2008 R32, and I’ve got a large amount of wiring and other prerequisites ahead of me, so I want to get my ducks in a row for efficiency’s sake. Some projects are more fleshed out, and others are pushing the fine line of my (growing) understanding.

One of these projects is to install an MIB2 Composition Media system, I’ve already got parts and a plan sorted for wiring and CP removal. When I get into it, I also want to install an interface knob/control unit from a D4 Audi A8 or similar.

From what I understand, there were no knob/dial controllers offered with the MIB2 systems in MQB vehicles. Please let me know if that’s incorrect. I’m wondering if anyone here has insight about the feasibility of using the Audi controller in a VW. Aside from wiring and coding, what hurdles stand in the way of making it possible? I assume update to a late model BCM and gateway, plus coding and admaps? I also assume this button assembly won't have component protection from 2012ish vehicle. Can the existing (mk5) Infotainment CAN bus be used for this? If not, what's the alternative route? Assume no amount of work is too much.

Looking for some creative spitballing, but don’t worry about the physical fitment of components, I’ll handle that. My goal is to have dial controls in addition to the touchscreen, for accessibility reasons. I’d appreciate any insight to help me make this happen.

Extra credit: I've also installed S-sport seats from a 2018 RS5. If I'm able to successfully get 5F to communicate with this MMI controller, I also wonder if it will someday be possible to get the pneumatic bolsters and massage function to work via MIB2.

I don't have a good recent autoscan, but this should give you an idea what I'm working with:

Firstly, retrofit CAN gateway at least 7N0907530BC to get support for infotainment units at address 5F.

Then consider this - for PQ platform there are factory native MIB2 radios in existence, being the Discover Media PQ and Composition Media PQ.

Thank you, yes, the BC gateway was on my radar, so that’s good confirmation. Another requirement of the project is to install an 8” screen, which I don’t believe was ever an option with the PQ versions of MIB2.

and ABS I think, must be AC or MK60EC1 due to no movement, and cluster al last

The AB won’t be sufficient? Thought I had seen some indication that the AB unit in the R32 was an outlier, but if it’s not, oh well, mk60ec1 goes on the project list. Can you please clarify, what problem does the older ABS cause? And what did you mean about the cluster?

Do navigate need GPS and proper ABS signal , just GPS antena will not move navigation

The Sat Nav needs speed information as well as location, and speed information comes from the ABS sensors.

Dead reckogning feature needs ABS sensor information and also information from the cars steering angle to get the direction of travel. That feature is not only used when GPS signal is lost but it's used to complement the GPS signal to get more precise tracking of the car on map. Civilian GPS is not very accurate and that alone would make the car bounce like hell on the screen :)

Yet somehow, Google Nav on a phone doesn't "bounce all over the screen" without steering angle or speed data.

Öhöm. It does have "speed data". Phone has IMU that it uses to measure movement. Without IMU it would jump all over the screen :)
Also mobile phone uses GPS data coming from mobile network to complement the GPS signal.

Google likes to "smooth" out their GPS data a lot, I've noticed. It'll preemptively show you following the route even as the real GPS data takes a sec to catch up. Sometimes when I take a wrong turn, the GPS shows my car going in the right direction for a brief moment before updating.

I’ll be installing non-nav MIB2. My nav is all done on my phone, via CarPlay. And I prefer the non-nav 8” screen with mute button instead of nav.

Assuming this car will never have nav, do I still need to change the ABS controller and cluster? Or am I fine without making those changes?

Is the steering angle data reported on the CAN bus directly from the sensor, or does 5F get it from the ABS controller? I ask mainly because of the RS5 seats I just installed. If I ever have any hope of enabling the active pneumatic bolsters, steering angle data will be part of that equation.

Depends. Either via separate ESP control module (older cars with ABS MK60) or via ABS with integrated ESP controller (generally MK60EC1 and newer).

The autoscan I posted above shows the component as “ESP 4MOTION MK60.” Does this mean my ESP controller is integrated? My understanding was that the MY2008 R32 ABS controller has some capabilities that generally were not available in most MK60 abs units. Is this correct? Either way, it sounds like you’re saying no, the steering angle data would not be directly available for my seats (and other components) to receive and interpret; they’d all normally pull that data from the ABS/ESP controller?

That exactly what I’m saying, but what does it matter? The data is available via gateway from CAN network. Only question is, from what module address the seats are expecting it to come.?
And MK60 does not have ESP module integrated to ABS. It’s a separate module in the middle section of the car. Somewhere front or behind the gear stick

And MK60 does not have ESP module integrated to ABS.
Waxing pedantic here: What it doesn't have integrated are the ESP Sensors (basically the accelerometers). ESP functionality is part of the MK60. Unlike the MK60EC1, it relies on external sensor inputs, while the MK60EC1 has these sensors integrated into the module.

Thank you, that’s good to know. So I’m left with one question relating to my original post: does anyone know if an Audi MMI control dial/panel “speaks the right language” to control a Volkswagen MIB2 infotainment system? Seen a similar retrofit done before? I’ve done tons of searching for months, and I’m shocked I haven’t even found any attempts.

Discover Media PQ works fine in Golf 5 with MK60 (not MK60EC1) ESP, also in tunnel
