2014 Audi R8 Gen 1 no crank on first attempt and numerous comms errors - starts second time & drives perfectly

Hello everyone,

I'm a long term VCDS user and thus rarely get stuck these days but this 2014 (Gen 1 facelift) Audi R8 V8 S tronic Spyder issue is driving me mad so any help appreciated.

The symptoms are as follows;

Intermittently but more often than not, when car has been left for a period of time, on first attempt to start the car, there is no crank and the brake system warning flashes up in red on DIS.
The instrument cluster does power up OK but the fuel range shows as zero when gauge shows plenty of fuel (every other reading is correct including 12v on voltmeter).
Then a few seconds later (it can vary from a second to maybe 10 seconds) you can hear the fuel pump energise and the fuel range shows correctly.

Cycle the ignition and car starts on second attempt every time and drives perfectly. For quite a long time previously it wouldn't crank on first turn but always on second but cluster behaved normally, however a Terminal 15 related DTC was logged so I suspect the issue has got worse over time.

I have used Erwin to locate the terminal 15 relay which is in the passenger footwell and swapped for the other 643 relay in there no difference - it is possible but unlikely that the other relay (both genuine VWG parts made by Hella in China) is suffering exactly the same fault. I have also fitted a non-genuine Bosch relay with a part number that crosses over but it's possible it may not be 100% correct for the purpose here.

If I remove the terminal 15 relay altogether (from slot 6) the fault occurs exactly as stated above but doesn't resolve itself.

I've fitted a new Hella AGM battery as weak battery always used to cause this fault on older Audis but it's made no difference.

Below is a full scan, ignore passenger door electrics and microphone DTCs as they are pre-existing faults, everything else is 100% as a result of this issue.

See if you can determine if that relay is actually closing when you try to start / crank. If not, you could try to manually ground it with a jumper wire and see if that closes it ; then try to crank/start.

You have several Term. 30 "opens" in the above scan which may be a clue.

See if you can determine if that relay is actually closing when you try to start / crank. If not, you could try to manually ground it with a jumper wire and see if that closes it ; then try to crank/start.

You have several Term. 30 "opens" in the above scan which may be a clue.
Thanks for your advice.
I pulled the cover off the relay and refitted it and I could see the relay operating fine but the car was having a good day today so I'll keep an eye on it.
I'm thinking body control module could be the issue if the relay is operating correctly and the fault recurs as that seems to be the next 'switch' in the circuit for the no commns modules

I would have a look around that module and its connections also; I'm also thinking that a Spyder R8 + UK = water ingress (??). If there is any corroded connections or water ingress to a module that may explain the intermittent problem also. Thanks for the update.

Thanks. It appears to be an unusually dry car inside with zero condensation issues in the winter and no damp smells but I will check BCM (very easy to do as behind passenger footwell carpet near the T15 relay.
The key attribute of the fault as well as being intermittent is that it usually resolves itself within seconds so it feels like a switch that's a bit lazy. Once it's energised it's OK until it's been left. Do you know how long it takes for the BCM to fully shutdown after the car has been locked as it could be this that's required for the fault to recur, until then it's fine.

I've also been having issues with the active rear spoiler raising on startup which appears to be a faulty end stop microswitch causing an implausible signal. I started to diagnose this yesterday and even though I don't appear to have done anything apart from fiddle around with the microswitches and it's still recognising it as faulty, the original fault seems better (but it's too soon to be sure). I wonder if the spoiler fault was delaying the BCM start up? It's definitely controlled via the BCM (central electrics) as I spent a long time in there looking at the microswitch status.

However, the Terminal 30 Left and Terminal 30 Right DTC references make it sound like a dual battery system. I *am* quite familiar with the Phaeton dual battery setup. The start-on-second-crank thing sounds suspiciously like the Phaeton emergency start procedure wherein both batteries get bridged together on the second attempt.

You say you replaced the battery. Is there more than one?

The Gen 1/42 R8 is thankfully not as complicated as a Phaeton!
It has just the one battery and the BCM is the one used in the facelift 8P A3 and 8J TT

I pulled the cover off the relay and refitted it and I could see the relay operating fine but the car was having a good day today so I'll keep an eye on it.

Rather than all this guess work, swapping relays etc. Can you get your hands on a Scope, Preferably 8 channels and set it up to make ACTUAL measurements at strategic points in the circuit then make a Logic led diagnosis ?

I've got a multimeter and I'm doing a crash course in wiring diagrams so will try and be more scientific in my approach.
I think the next step is to replace the faulty rear spoiler microswitch and see if this fixes the issue.

I have also fitted a non-genuine Bosch relay with a part number that crosses over but it's possible it may not be 100% correct for the purpose here.

You might want to be careful there, they fit diodes and resistors in Relays to stop modules being fried when the relay goes open !!

It's the same type of relay but the resistance is a bit higher.

I know it sounds weird but on reflection the crank issue has got worse as the spolier fault has got worse - previously you could lower it with the button, now it won't respond at all and the beep error for spoiler happens at exactly the same time the other errors flag up on DIS

It does sound weird and rather bizarre, I cannot get my head around it.

However, that spoiler needs to fixed and then if it does solve the other issues I will eat these words :facepalm: And we learn something from it !

If not then we can move on with a diagnosis with one less variable so a move in the right direction ?

Except for the Engine and Auto-Trans (if equipped), the rest of the Mk.1 R8 was indeed just like an 8P A3 or 8J TT from an electronic systems perspective. Back then, I was quite disappointed in this, because it meant we could not justify getting one for R&D purposes. :(

Nah. IIRC, those CECMs have two (or more?) Terminal 30 inputs, one for the left side loads and one for the right side loads.

This needs to be chased with a meter and a wiring diagram, although I think we've seen some cases where those faults were due to an internal failure in the CECM.

Yes Agreed !! Only the Shit that VAG produce has that problem and I do see it often.

I dont think I have ever seen it on any other Marque in 45 years.

Tossers cannot get a fuse box right and claim to make a good car !! I cant see that !!

Just an update on this. The car was in storage over the winter and on getting it out recently, I was reminded this fault was still present.
A quick recap is that the car won't crank on first attempt but usually on second it will (very occasionally more attempts might be needed) and the 00185 - Control Circuit; Relay for Supply Voltage Terminal 15 012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit - Intermittent error is logged in Central Electrics (this is the only DTC that was being logged once I put the original relays back in)
This is generally accompanied by the rear spoiler extending on the first failed attempt to start.
I did think it was possibly BCM related as the active spoiler is controlled through it but it turned to all be related to the igntion switch which on reflection is quite obvious, not only because its main function is starting the car but because the only mechanical part of terminal 15 is the switch.
