Yes i noted it too and we replaced it with Genuine VW one
On the 2.0 Turbo DSG its position R3 (644 Relay)

I'm now looking at a Log i managed to save 5 mins into the test run - and its full of errors
See below
This Log is New faults on Start up

I cleared these codes and re-scanned at 10 Mins / 15 / 20 and 1hrs - No Malfunctions
Can running perfectly for 2 hours
I could access 01 Engine and was checking adaptations - all tests were availabe so No doubt the ECU was fine
Until we shut down and were hit with another list of errors but it restarted
Now its Lit up Green can get Access but no communication

DSG Mechtronic internal short ?
Its a bloody clunky gearchange and its always been a bit jerky switching Reverse to Drive and been getting worse
Its had oil change and filter last year
No error codes

But this time I made sure to save as much as I could so we have something to go back on expecting the ECU to die

Sorry for boring anyone but Saving it here is most helpful - i can scroll though the errors using muliple screens all in one place
Plus it may help others in the future

We changed these Relays with VW parts before re-start - regardless

R3 (644) Motronic Supply Relay
in the Engine Bay Fuse Box

R2 (507) Starter Relay 2
Cabin Fuse Box

We couldnt find a Starter Relay 1 (Terminal 75 Voltage Supply Relay 2011-2015)
it would be in Position R6 but the car doesnt have one fitted nothing there ?

The fan behaviour shows the controller (in the main fan) can see the ignition is on so assumes the engine is running but isn’t receiving the temperature signal from the ECU, it is programmed to assume the engine is over heating and goes into full meltdown mode. I find this highly annoying when doing diagnostics as it is noisy and flattens the battery so I pull the fan fuse to get some peace and quiet. In your case I would be accessing the ECU and checking the three main power and earth connections. You could find the connection about 10 centimetres back up the harness from the plug is corroded where the green/red 12v supply splits off into three, to pins 1, 2 and 4 from memory.

You seem to have a simple fault here - Power supply hence No Comms with Engine ? I really dont believe the multiple ECU's failing nonsense regardless of who you think tested them !!

These were never a good car just as the Golf they are based on. For one it not uncommon for the fuse boxes to fail !!

Those power supplies need load testing "END to END" Whilst plugged in !!


That there is a 200 minute diagnosis, with fault present, using a scope with time for lunch included !!

Nailed and out the door in a morning !!

Still not getting anywhere

Car has been investigated with scope n all sorts no fault can be found on the car or the harnesses, earths or anything

The car also bricked our last remaining Donor ECU this time with NO engine running
this time the IGN was switched from ON to OFF not even running
ECU was plugged into electrcians Bluetooth Diagnostic kit
Car was moved to make way for another car moved outside with IGN on to enable an easy move with a Good ECU connected
- Brought back in the workshop IGN was then turned off which bricked the ECU
a noticable change occured in the ECU software data live on the Diag kit

There is a common theme on all the other failed Donor ECU's
They are all correctly showing the Part number 06J906027AJ and Software Versions e.g. 2577 in GREEN - they have power and powering up other services

But the ECU data "Long Coding" "Code Workshop" and "VIN Code" data has been Wiped on all 3 x Donor ECU'S to loads of Zeros 00000
and no access to the ECU - its like they have been formatted but leaving the base data on

The electrican says its like what he can only describe as the Donor ECU's being in a "Service" "Programming" mode "unlocked"
- if there is such a thing ?
when the Ignition is turned off, because its unlocked it either writes or something writes over the ECU Data turning it back to a Base unit or its corrupting it
becuase of a conflict of Vin number on shut down from other controllers ?
The last one showing 24 x attempts of writing

Gonna get the ECU's sent off see if any Coding Data can be recovered and find our what state these ECU's are in

The Original ECU has been confirmed with blown Injector driver and resistors traced to connected pins and tracked back through the harness under the inlet manifold all load tested and inspected - no faults no signs of rubbing

But thats where we are up to

If that has been diagnosed correctly then you would now have a useful accurate diagnosis.

Update on the Beetle - Its Back on the Road

As i said we checked the whole car through replaced a good few parts and scoped it
- No fault we couldn't find anything
We suspected Immbo issues with the Donor ECU's even though they were defeated, how else could we start and drive the car then the ECU 01 Engine corrupts on restart

I booked it in with VW Oldham to have a New ECU Installed - no more messing with Used ECU's and Immob deleting
We've had to wait for a repair slot since November
car went in on 2nd March and then waited until 12th for the New ECU to arrive (Back Order)

My theory which I put forward to the Master tech is based on ECU Immob issues I have come across on Merc Actros Trucks when dealing with dealing with immob off
The Actros has a Key sensor ring under the steering column to read the Immob chip in the key fob
- if that sensor and loom is not removed prior to fitting the defeated ECU, it will seach via the sensor ring for the immob causing the ECU to corrupt and will need restoring again from the saved back up
Very similar to what the Beetle was doing in 01 Engine Address (workshop data)

How does this relate to the Beetle ?
The Beetle has Optional Comfort Access Keyless system and it also has a Sensor Ring under the Steering column so it was possibly the same issue
(but still it was still a guess and an expensive one if it didn't work out)
We were happy everything has been checked out as much as we could thoughout the car so we went ahead

Prior to having the work done I explained all works done so far to the VW Mastertech and my thoughts about the Sensor ring and possible cause of the original ECU failure (poss damage from a Jump Start pack)
He agreed the Sensor ring could cause an issue because it can't read the key signal because the Immob has been mapped out
but as a dealer they don't swap used ECU's or defeat Immobs so cannot be 100% certain - the ECU could potentially spike or corrupt
so we took a gamble

New Genuine VW ECU Installed / programmed to the car it started first time as it did before
and now starts first time repeatedly no issues - car saved :thumbs:
