2013 Passat tdi, 2.0. Besides a failing turbo, what else may cause oil at the tailpipe? There is none present but just wondering in case something comes up. The turbo is the first thing that connects to the exhaust so whatever end up at the exhaust end must pass thru turbo first, right? So if oil were to be found at the tailpipe it came thru the turbo; how would one eliminate the turbo is the source and not something else? One could detach the turbo from dpf and also from the air intake side and see if there is oil, but how would one know thaT oil coming from somewhere else passing thru?

Remove the turbo off the head, and if you still see oil in your exhaust ports, it's NOT from the turbo!

Crappy, worn out rings, valve seals, excessive crank case pressure, failed PCV, etc.

Thank you! So besides the oil signs, there no other symptoms as far as how car runs and such, again assuming its not a turbo issue. Would there be white smoke or soemthing or would the dpf be filtering all that, hence no signs?

I don't understand what you are asking.
If there's oil, and it's not a hypothetical question, the oil is coming from somewhere under the hood. So, you should be consuming oil.

If you're simply asking how to tell if anything is wrong with your engine, typically, if there's no noise or smoke, there will be oil or coolant consumption, or a decrease in FE.... Those are the signs that something isn't good... Plus the obvious MIL, limp mode, or similar "warnings".

Understood. What about oil pressure in order to confirm worn out rings or valve seals issue; there no other way to diagnose but to take apart and look at condition? Is there a way to monitor oil pressure with vcds or something similar?

Worn rings or valve seals won't have a material effect on oil pressure, at least not until the engine has consumed enough oil to cause the pump to suck air from the pan.

Found this below. Is this what is meant by run-away ? Is the theory correct?

"Diesel combusts anything that is oil based because of the high compression, so all the oil from the breather, rings and such would be burned inside the engine, but there shouldn't be any oil on the exhaust side before the turbo, unless the turbo itself is leaking".

I could look up what it left the factory with however that info is useless to any worthwhile diagnostician.

I want to know what it has today some 12 - 13 years later.

And this
Not presently. Straight pipe . Maintenance/trouble shooting dpf.

Makes me think he has ripped the lot out ??

You will need a pressure gauge which some cars are fitted with.

I'm fairly sure your Passat does not. It has a switch that triggers a warning at a preset pressure.

To get an accurate reading you would "T" in a gauge or better still a transducer.

Edit - It has a switch that triggers a warning when below a pre-set pressure.
