Hello, first time posting, I have a Crafter and 4 recurring faults, the one I need help with is Terminal 30 on start up, voltage drops to 9 V and causes MIL, starter is not sluggish, new Battery coded, checked all connections and cleaned, dont want to replace starter if not needed, any ideas?

I also have an ABS terminal 30 fault, measured it through VDCS whilst engine running and at 0vdc checked fuses and all have voltage on, going to have to start digging in! does anyone know the Terminal 30 low voltage fault setpoint?

Hello, thought I was getting to the bottom of it! It has had a new alternator before my ownership,I noticed the LIN wire had been extended, checking address 19 it only shows battery monitor and not generator? And had no current and when running voltage was 12.2-3, on Inspection the installed generator was the wrong art number, purchased a new one and I have. Charge and current info, cleared faults and nothing came back, thought that was it, went out for a drive, started a few times then MIL came on after 3rd start, still have low voltage, open circuit. All terminals cleaned, fuses checked, new battery codded, did notice a large volt drop on starter (9 .8) but not sluggish, have one to try (second hand) has anyone got ECU and ABS module info? Many thanks

Is that you telling us that Battery Voltage drops to 9.8v whilst Cranking ?

If so that is not terrible but could be (marginally) better - How old is the battery ?


Lets look at the Potential Difference - Measure the Voltage on the Engine Block, better still the Starter motor case, as you crank it ??


Better than that would be a Current Clamp on the Starter Motor B+ Cable.

Thanks for reply, battery is brand new, codded, battery, FYI voltage was trended vcds Terminal 30, so I suppose could be data lag, not sure of scan rate of ECU, out today but will do as you suggested soon as

Not sure about data lag - Scan rate of the ECU is enough to "see" the "fault" and report it so ..............

However

Looking at the Freeze Frame data behind each fault shows a voltage of >12v which looks good at first glance.

However there is no comparison made to Actual Battery Voltage - Which would be the calculation within the DTC setting Criteria.



I would have an 8 channel scope pointed at all sorts on that car and record it as it faults and catch it that way !!

The 8 channels makes these jobs easy. In the absence of that facility you will just have to work harder and struggle a teeny weeny bit more !!

Terminal 30 is continous voltage directy from battery
Terminal 15 is only active when the ignition is switched on.
Both volatges schould be around your battery voltage.

It will make it wherever the designer thought fit !! So that could vary from car to car.

Cars with battery management will monitor voltages and current and have more control over energy management.


Whilst you crank both 30 and 15 will be active however the DTC's are all pointing at T30

I would be Volt Drop testing from Battery terminal at each module that throws a code !!

voltage drops to 9 V and causes MIL
If you are sure, have an inkling, that this is the cause then there is no better way than a Scope and Amp Clamp to measure Starter Motor and Battery Health whilst they go to work !!

Hello, still have issues, no scope yet but tried other tests and I can rule out starter and Glow plugs so the plot thickens! If I start the vehicle via ignition key then the fault appears after 3 faults the MIL illuminates, however if I clear the faults and drive around town and letting the van start and stop using the auto stop then I do not have any faults! replaced, Glow relay and checked cabling, unplugged glow relay to rule out plugs, have error for relay and Low Voltage terminal 30, I have noticed I have no Terminal 30 voltage measured on ABS unit, any ideas on how to test this or suck it up and replace? what would continue to run when Terminal 15 relay stays on for Auto start Stop? any ideas would be helpful. As I write this I am thinking the next test is to unplug ABS and start the van and see if I have a low voltage fault..
