My Audi 1995 A6 2.8 C4 has a starter that is sticking on. We have replaced the battery, starter & ignition switch. I need to know if anyone knows where to locate the STARTER RELAY. We have searched the forums and cannot find a consistent answer. My mechanic wants to know where it is so he can test the circuit. If anyone knows it would be greatly appreciated.

Should this testing have been performed before loading up the parts cannon?

Thanks for your response but I still need to know where the relay is at this point.

^ I would guess so.... relay #4 as per above, under the steering wheel in Central Electric Relay panel (I think that's what it's called)
Suggest you try to buy a service manual from Bentley Publishers:

It will detail locations.
AllData and Mitchell will also have that vintage details.... I don't recall if any of them still offer DIY subscriptions, but you can sometimes find these for free at local public libraries or even at parts stores depending on local.

My point was that you're paying a mechanic to fix your stuff prior to doing basic checks.... you're starting at the wrong end of the "diagnostic" approach.

More info: At first the starter was slow, the battery was 6 years old so we replaced that. About a month later it wouldn't start at all. After replacing the starter it still wouldn't start. But while testing the starter the starter stuck on. So we replaced the ignition switch (electrical part). Now the starter still sticks even with the key removed from the ignition. So my mechanic would love to swap the relay as we have a parts car available. BTW The link to the service manual is for a C5 not C4. Thanks for all the help.

The problem is intermittent and I need to know where the relay is so I can test the switch. My VIN is wauja84a1snxxxxxx if that helps. We have a parts car that we could swap the relay with. PS I can't decipher the language on this chart... Thanks.

Brutal... you want help, but can't read, and won't even provide necessary details.
Your mechanic also sounds like he has no clue what he's doing.

Even without schematics, a trained monkey could remove the relays one by one to determine which one (if any) are involved in the operation of the starter motor.

Even an ape should be able to use a test light or a meter to see what's happening at the starter if it "sticks sometimes" to determine if a relay needs to even be looked for, etc.

IMO, a good mechanic admits what he doesn't know. Will you admit that you don't know where the starter relay is either? My mechanic has been working on my cars for almost 30 yrs, and has never ripped me off. If we knew which relay it is, we could swap one out of a parts car and test from there. BTW, my mechanic is laughing at say vag suit because he has been called an ape for many years. Now all trolling and flaming aside, any idea where the starter relay is? #4 in the foreign language schematic is labeled for "auto trans shift interlock in my car.

No, but I will admit that neither of you know how to read a WD or are advanced enough to provide critical basic information\details such as manual\auto and full VIN since all those play a crucial role in determining what to look at, etc.

If that schematic is correct then its Relay position #4 which will be a big bridge connector if the car is manual, or it will be a relay if the car is automatic (to stop apes from starting the engine while not in Park).

Yeah, all that was already given to him... even if the primates can't read the WD, they were pointed to the location... maybe reading text is also a struggle

IMO !!

You're statement suggests very strongly that you have no clue what a good technician is and even less of a clue about diagnostic procedure.

Let me put you straight !!

A good technician will not be wrong !! Nothing to admit !

A good Technician will stay abreast of Automotive Technology.

A good technician will have no need to admit he is wrong, He she will have the correct tooling and service literature for reference to hand.

I may not know off hand where the starter motor relay is in every car but I can assure you that I will make certain I have a substantial amount of technical data for your vehicle before you and your broken car can qualify as my client !!

My mechanic wants to know where it is so he can test the circuit.

How the 7uck do you think it is logical to put "My mechanic wants to know where it is" and "so he can test the circuit" in the same sentence / thread ?

So you pay him to fix store your car and he has a good guess and tells you it is your problem that he cannot find a component ??

Is that true ??
