Hi Group,

Gets car back from dealer after them doing a battery check and found this fault.

No warning lights showing in instrument cluster.

When I attempt to erase it the fault immediately comes back up & a weird clunking noise can be heard coming from under the bonnet.

Thanks In Advance.

Get documentation and find where sensor lives. Step 1: visual inspection.

TTT Thanks for your speedy response ! What sort of documentation and where? I've checked for videos on its location but can't find so far.

Erwin subscription (is in UK 1h available for cheap?) and click pdf downloads as fast as you can.

Vacuum sensor should be in the vacuum line between brake booster and intake manifold or vacuum pump. I don’t know your vehicle’s configuration.

I have two photos of my engine bay. Could I post a link here for you to view them from my Facebook as I'm having trouble getting Imgur to work.

The sensor is part only available (genuine VW that is) with the brake servo pipe, number 6C0 612 041 L and £158.40 retail inc. from a VW main dealer or TPS if they will serve you without an account. Don’t be tempted to drive it like this, it can cause the ABS pump to fail and that’s another £1146 on top. I hope Uwe doesn’t mind the image source? I am at home so can’t do it properly.

Thank You Crasher.
Does the vacuum sensor put the ABS Warning light on in the cluster if the vacuum pump has failed or failing? And if the vacuum Sensor has malfunctioned, will that automatically cause the pump to fail ?

A failed Vacuum Sensor, Essential for correct brake operation will light up the ABS Warning lamp for sure.

For some reason, that I cannot fathom, a failed vacuum sensor if not addressed will very soon cause problems in the ABS Module requiring replacement or repair - Neither of which is cheap.

We have no clue how much you have driven the car since that error occured so it may or may not already have done the damage !!

Replace the sensor ensuring it is not in fact a wiring or connector issue then you will know where you are.

Adding to the above ^^ - Yes indeed the sensor could be ok but the Vacuum pump has failed. I guess if that was the case you would be moaning about a very Solid / Hard brake pedal with little servo assistance.

It's the vacuum Sensor that has had an electrical failure & malfunction. According to a VCDS Scan.

It's the vacuum Sensor that has had an electrical failure & malfunction. According to a VCDS Scan.
More accurately according to the DTC that your module is delivering to VCDS. VCDS will read it and display it on your screen. VCDS plays no part in generating or choosing the the DTC. It is just a messenger.

That is quite likely a very accurate DTC and Description however a broken wire, poor connection may or may not throw the same DTC at you.

Worth checking in my book. MVB for Vacuum vs Actual measured Vacuum will guide you.

The failure you have is so common that the chances of it not being the Vacuum sensor is small, tiny ! Add to that you are not moaning about a hard pedal confirms that the Vacuum pump is working.

Replace the Vacuum Sensor, Wiring confirmed, then replace the ABS module if needed. It is that simple !!

I'll call the VW Dealership tomorrow to get it booked in as I've only had the car a few weeks. It's already been in for a battery losing its charge. They drained it & recharged it overnight & it's still the same.

I am not sure if the Polo is affected the same way because with the ones I have seen, I have pushed to get it done ASAP. On the Q7, Q5, TOERAG 3 and one Passat 8, the ABS pump has been damaged. People usually take notice of this fault not because of the warning light, which doesn’t always come on, but the braking action where the ABS pump itself starts to supplement the brake pressure and so the car feels odd and makes noises from the pump, which then fails. With a Q5 we did where the sensor failed and then the pump, the owner had a warranty (I hate warranty companies), they paid for the sensor but not the £3k pump as that was consequential damage that could have been avoided with prompt action and I agreed with them.

I need to get it in soon then. I'm starting to wish I kept my original 2010 Polo. It had just over 120,000 on the clock with some bodywork damage & got tempted with a newer model with only 20,000 on the clock.
I have a feeling the newer cars aren't as reliable & durable.

They are less prone to actually braking down but with the level of complexity even a current Polo has, more prone to faults and much more complex to repair. I am rebuilding a 1995 Audi S2, in its day I viewed it as being scarily complex but now it is less worrying to work on than a current generation Polo and the 2019 S8 I did a few weeks back, bloody daunting prospect to work on, I have never done a scan that had that many ECU’S.
