Please check ac compressor shut off condition. Also check to see if there is a charge in the system. System needs at least 200grams to function.

Very little experience with a/c systems. Could you explain a little more what you mean by shut off condition?

I have a/c manifold gauge that I've never used, so I'll do my best to figure them out and check charge. Any advice or vehicle specific pointers if anyone has any would be great.

Is the only way to get 200 grams by draining and refilling? Or can you add until pressure is correct?

Read all 3 pages of your A/C system crash course. I'm following how system works a bit better, but clearly don't have you're efforts under my belt yet.

I'm a decent learner, and approach all new things with the assumption that it's all over my head. Definitely willing to educate to a point, because as you found out, professionals can't always be trusted...

So as I try to figure out HVAC and all VCDS has to offer, this is what I came up with.

I assume the cause of no A/C is no refirgerant. If you all agree, how should I check for leak? Is this normal on 13+ year old vehicle? Should I try to recharge?

Yes 2.5 bar is pretty much empty. The question is what in the a/c system is pissing? pressure switch pissing? Condensor pissing? Did the a/c compressor grenade causing leak? Even with compressor off with the current temps ballpark you should have 3-3.5bar static pressure with compressor running like it claims it is you should have between 7-12 bar of pressure. Time to find out where the leak is.

It's not normal... but you may have a small leak, or it might've slowly seeped out (not clear that this is a thing over time, but some believe it can be).
I would evacuate whatever is in the system, weight it. (not really needed, as we already know you're low)
Pull vacuum to see if the system is sealed (most likely won't be, and you won't be able to do this)
If you manage to hold vacuum, refill it (refrigerant and oil)and validate full compressor\system operation.
Then, either use a sniffer to check for leaks, or monitor the pressures over a few days to see if they are dropping, and if they are, start thinking about next steps.

Or you can just look for the leak as the first step.... probably fill the system with nitrogen after evacuating it, and locate your leak.

Did some internet searching on all suggestions - appreciate the guidance.

Idea of nitrogen seems best to me, but not sure how to obtain reasonable quantity...suggestions? Or is this an Airgas/welding supplier item only?

Found sniffers on Amazon, at Harbor Freight, and also much higher quality ones out there. Are cheapos useless or satisfactory for single job use?
