2016 Audi S4, ~40700 miles.
I was driving through heavy rain and I received the "steering failure" in yellow and then red "steering failure. Do not drive!" a few minutes later, or something to that effect. Damn near almost killed me as I wasn't expecting the wheel to become so stiff in dumping rain on a two-lane road. The electric assist steering certainly isn't like the old manual steering cars with hydraulic systems. I was able to drive it home and then looked under the car the next day. I found that the baffling/boot was no longer connected on the drivers side, so I assume water intrusion killed it.
The car isn't eligible for the extended warranty because it has a branded title (Rebuilt). The accident that damaged the car didn't affect any of the mechanical components, but Audi corporate doesn't seem to care and already dismissed the extended part warranty on the steering box.
Question is: what exactly is broken and what do I need to replace? I understand the rack needs to be replaced, but what about the control module? Is there a way I can "reset" it and see if it still comes up dead? It had several days to dry out. The parking brake works - I don't understand that code.
