2002 TT225 - 18056 and 01312 - Powertrain Data Bus Failure

I have suddenly developed an issue that is seemingly related to the ECU communications. This is an issue that I haven't previously encountered in 20 years of VW ownership, so I'm not totally sure what to do next.

I drove the car home Wednesday evening without issue, but when I tried to start it Thursday morning, the car would start and then it would appear that the ECU immobilizer turns it off after a second. I can throw a rev into it, so it's also responsive to inputs. The cluster immo light turns off as usual pre-ignition and does not come on after shut down. I've checked a handful of ECU related fuses (11, 32, 34, iirc), but am curious about any other recommendations. I also disconnected the ground cable from the battery for a handful of minutes with no change. I considered clearing all faults and seeing if it made a difference, but I have not had that opportunity yet. I will get to do more diagnostics this afternoon and tomorrow. Since the engine still fires, I'm hoping this is a fuse, relay, or grounding issue.

A lot of the codes I'm not concerned with - this is an autocross/track car, so the airbag codes are because of the racing steering wheel and racing seat in the car. Similarly, 17881 for the EVAP LDP is because the pump is removed. Some of the Cent Lock codes are interesting (to my knowledge, the car has never been crashed...).

I would really, really, really like to resolve this today, as there is an autocross on Sunday that I desperately wanted to participate in.

First thing I would do is pull the instrument cluster and check the connector(s) at the back. Apply contact cleaner/conditioner to them before plugging them back in.

Beyond that, it's disconnect modules on the powertrain bus one at a time to see if the others then no longer complain. And if that doesn't fix it, then you'll need to verify all the wiring for the powertrain CAN.

Yes, a 2002 TT Quattro (AMU).

I pulled the cluster, unlatched all connections - they looked perfect.

I pulled the ECM, unlatched all connections - they looked perfect.

I scanned the Immobilizer blocks per the Ross-Tech instructions: https://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/Immo3-measuring-blocks.html

Block 022: 1 - 1 - 1 - 1
Block 023: 1 - 1 - 1 - 6
Block 024: 0 - 0 - 0 - 0

Cleared all codes and scanned again. Appears mostly the same, with the addition of the 00778 on the ABS module. I also find it interesting that my cluster gained a mile between all of this. I'm sure that has to do with rounding up when unplugged or something like that - not concerning.

I looked through my Bentley, but at face value, it doesn't offer a lot in terms of diagnostic help.

You mentioned the powertrain bus - is that a group of connectors in a centralized location (e.g., the rain tray to interior connection box)?

Can I unplug the cluster, then key on and scan the car without it bricking the car / locking the IMMO? I know with other cars that I've owned, keying on with the BCM or PCM unplugged can lead to the car locking itself down - I wanted to make sure this one isn't the same way before I did it.

I have had cluster issues lately; specifically the speed and tach needles dropping to zero while driving. That's generally been it though; fuel, temp, and center display always remain completely functional. (EDIT: ...or is this a sign of something outside of the cluster...... ?)

@Jetta 97 - on your site, I see the TT repair service and you mention repairing the temp and fuel stepper motors, but I'm curious if the issue I mention above is something you've seen and if it can be repaired.

Get wiring diagram, look to the power train bus schematic, see which modules complains about bus, then you can guestimate about where the fault might be.

Unplug abs module and clear codes see if the powertrain fault is still there or not.

ABS unplugged. Cleared all faults. Scanned again. Seemingly no change - actually added another Powertrain Data Bus Failure to the Engine module.

Cluster unplugged. Cleared all faults. Scanned again. Seemingly no change.

ECM unplugged. Cleared all faults. No modules will scan, lol. I guess that makes sense?

Changed the 100 and 428 with another 1.8T that I have; no effect.

I have two other 1.8T ECMs lying around - I might try one of those next to see if the faults go away.

Otherwise, it sounds like I'll be dive into the wiring diagrams in the Bentley, but I'm a mechanical engineer and am very not good with electronics, so fingers crossed.

You can unplug all day long. You 1st must understand how the bus wiring is layed out then look who is complaining about errors against the network layout.

I do not have the electrical experience to sit down with my wiring diagrams and figure this out in a weekend - I'm very much a beginner there. And I was hoping to race the car this weekend, so I'm starting with the simple: Fuses, relays, and unplug until the error goes away. If I cannot figure it out by the end of today, then I'll work on learning about CAN BUS, the wiring layout, and how to better use and understand the information the VCDS gives me, etc.

No, actually, it does not. There's no reason that the other modules in the car shouldn't talk just because the ECM is unplugged.

Interesting. That's what I assumed would happen when I unplugged it, but the scan wouldn't do anything. I should have saved it, but there was seemingly no info provided, so I just cleared and plugged the ECU back in. I might try that again tomorrow.

I've found info on the CAN-H and CAN-L wires going into the cluster (T32a / 18 & 19), but am still going through the diagrams to find the ECU connectors so I can multimeter the wiring between them.

Okay, I figured this one out. It's quite simple. I think it happens after saving a report: when I hit 'Clear all DTCs', the dropbox changes from '8N' to 'Auto-detect', which does not work and hence - no modules reporting.



In this order I scanned: (1) no ECM, (2) a GTI ECM [06A 906 032 NK], (3) a Jetta ECM [06A 906 032 RN], (4) and then I found Fuse 22 in the dashboard fuse panel to be busted, so I replaced it and scanned with the OE ECM.
  • NO ECM - still have 01312 and 01314 faults in the ABS and Instrument modules.
  • GTI ECM - scan looks basically the same as the OE ECM scan. Same basic faults throughout.
  • Jetta ECM - this one was a bit different.
    • A second 18056 fault in the engine module and the readiness was 0110 0000 instead of 0110 1101.
    • The ABS module dropped the 01314 and 00778 faults.
    • The Instrument module picked up a 01312 fault.
  • Fuse 22 replacement caused one new fault in the Instrument module:
    • 00667 - Ambient Temperature Signal
      29-10 - Short to Ground - Intermittent
I'm not sure that it's worth reading into the differences between the GTI and Jetta ECMs, but I would conlude that my OE ECM does not have an internal fault.

I am curious about the G85 sensor. I checked it via measuring block 004 and had a steering angle of like 13 degrees. Moving the wheel did not update the measured number at all. Backing out and measuring again the wheel showed 0 degrees - and never changed from 0 degrees after multiple wheel moves and attempts. I'm not sure how worthwhile that info is though, but seeing as I could read block 005(?) for brake pressure and I could see live updates as I pressed the pedal, I am suspect of the G85 sensor.


I looked at my ambient temperature sensor and did not see any indication of wiring damage. Pulled the sensor and measured about 1100 ohms (it's about 24 degC right now). Replacing Fuse 22 is interesting though, as that covers the J285 module, which is part of my CAN-bus system, and a short to ground would obviously pop a fuse. Ultimately, no change occurred with faults and the IMMO still kills the car after replacing the fuse. I'll have to figure out where the temp sensor wiring is routed and see if that coincides with any of the CAN-bus wiring. Fingers crossed. There's a track day this coming Saturday, it would really make my week to solve this and make that event.

I've managed to reproduce and fix it. This only happens on K-line cars, after you hit the Save button, and click back into the Autoscan screen. As the filter/search is being re-enabled after saving the autoscan, it gets the focus and loses it when the Clear all DTCs button is pressed; that in turns resets the selection to Auto-Detect. Auto-detect is then used to clear the DTCs, which is Not Good.
We're still dealing with the consequences of Seb's mid-2024 improvement requests here :) but I fixed it with the least possible amount of unintended consequences: when we have K-line results, do not re-enable the filter/model selection after the Save/Print/Copy button is pressed, which I think was the behavior pre-"improvement" ;)
