2017 Jetta, twist key ignition, no crank. Seems the owner of the car was out of town when one day the car didn't crank over. Car towed to [some place] and after many hours of banging rocks together decided the ECM was bad, so a new ECM was installed... and no crank. I guess a few more rocks banged together and was told it needed a starter. Owner of car rightfully thinks this shop is full of chalk eaters and tows the car back to his home town. In said home town, [another shop] gets it and starts poking around... do a few simple things (swap out starter relays) but getting no where.... before more $$$ is put into this Jetta, reaches out to us (Ross-Tech).

Looking at live data in the ECM for the Terminal 50 signal (starter), it doesn't change when key is in crank position, as such, the ECM has no reason to operate the 2 starter relays.

Looking at the wiring diagram, a simple ignition switch.

biMOau9.png

T10/4 is the Terminal 50 signal coming out electrical part of the ignition switch and it does have power when key is in the crank position. This wire runs to the ECM T99/44 and there is no power there when the key is in the crank position... seems to be a wiring failure and we are maybe 15 minutes into the phone call. The tech back probes T99/44 and hotwires it to B+, engine cranks and fires up.

So the good news, a broken wire... the bad news... have fun finding that. The call ends at 10:48 AM.

11:20 AM, this other shop calls back, found the issue... it seems that maybe the owner the car move the steering wheel in/out a lot, to the point the wiring was cracking apart... and the wire that carried the Terminal 50 signal to the ECM was open circuit:

A concern is that this might become a bit of an "common" issue as these cars get older, not a good sign that soo many wires have cracking insulation all at the same area.

I'm a bit ... confused... as to why the first shop didn't look to see if the ECM was getting a Terminal 50 signal... but instead dropped in a $1000 ECM (plus labor and diag time)... and then wanted to toss a $250 starter (plus labor) at it. :banghead: I would guess the owner of the car is going to be "thrilled" to find out the car just needed $30 worth of crimp connectors plus labor to fix the no crank issue.

That there i what I see day in day out !!

And some wonder why I get a little "Short and Agitated! at the trade and those that claim to be Technicians !!

Wow. I'd be looking at exactly how that harness bends when the steering wheel is moved in and out and up and down.

Also, what the heck is VW using for insulation these days? 2017 isn't that old! Let me guess, they're using some organic, environmentally friendly, soy-based crap again?

Back in early 2000s, the wiring for throttle bodies was made by some French company:
