Hello

I have had a look at a friend of mines golf and it keeps coming up with random misfire codes, I have changed over 2 coils and moved others around. It has had recent spark plug replacement. Also it had a blown vacuum pump fuse. Mainly the misfire occurs under load. another shop told him this was likely head gasket failure. What's everyone's thoughts?

Hey all

Quick update, I had another look today and seems that the coolant leak that was carried out by the shop didn't reveal any external leaks. It turns out the loss was form the water to air cooler found in the intake manifold.

I discovered this by popping out the the map sensor as I was curious to see if the intake ports were blocked. I did find a replacement cooler however the random misfire on all cylinders is still present P0301-P0304 the vacuum pump fuse was blown when I got the car but is ok after replacing it. Can I bypass the system to check PCV or evap system, over to the brains trust on this one. . .

Here is a updated scan with the random misfire codes, I will check over the PCV and intake for vacuum leaks which I suspect is most likely the cause as misfiring only starts past 1/8th throttle or light load onwards.

This one has still got me beat I have replaced the faulty vacuum pump and sure enough it was broken up internally, however the random misfire is still occurring.
I thought it would likely be a lazy MAF sensor causing the random misfire, but instead it uses dual map sensors for intake pressure and temp. These seem to be working. I road tested the car with the misfire counter on and it is definitely going across all cylinders ok on light load but breaks down as soon as throttle is opened


Just wondering if anyone else out there has come across this before?

Got to the bottom of the misfire, turns out it was spark plugs. This surprised me as they had been replaced not too long ago and were the correct NGK iridium, I was a bit suspect as it had had repeated sets replaced by the shop servicing the car from the previous owners documentation. They looked fine but went in the bin.
