Hi all,

Hope you can help me on what the issue could be and what data I can capture during the fan running 100% to help the garage.

UK Car, RHD, under warranty. Occurring for the last month.
2024 A6 C8 Hybrid 50 TFSIe Avant, Rad Fan 1 (Passenger side) randomly comes on to 100%. Fan 2 off.
- When parked, locked and not interacting with the car, could be on for 10-15 mins
- when unlocking, fan comes on for 2-10 mins
- when driving, fan can stay on for the duration of the journey - both Electric drive and petrol.

One test, parked, when the car came up to operating temp, about 105c, Rad Fan 1 dropped from 100% and BOTH fans came on at low revolution, maybe 15%.
For example, while getting ready in the morning, the rad was blowing 100% at 07:05 morning - note, at the time it was charging (granny charger) - but happens when not charging.

It is as if a demand signal is being generated from something. Is Coolant Fan 1 also cooling coolant for the battery and charging system?

Audi Garage replaced fan, controller and wiring harness - same issue. They then replaced the Thermal ECU - same issue.

Checking some measurements so far, I do see unusual but perhaps benign values, for example;
- Coolant Temperature at engine outlet: specified value 30.7c
- Coolant Temperature at radiator outlet: Actual value 16.0c
- Coolant Temperature at radiator outlet: specified value -48.0c <<<< --- issue?

Is there any adv Controller measurements I should look at when the issue is occurring?

So in general, most modern fans are operated by a dumb control module, more or less a solid state relay that pulses the fans on/off at different duty cycles for different speeds. Fan control modules will typically have 4 wires, a main power, main ground, wake up line (ignition switch) and data.

When a fan module gets the wake up signal, it will expect data from the ECM to tell it what speed, if any, to operate. However, if the fan module wakes up and does not see any data signal from the ECM, it will fail to high speed fan operation.

In most cases where this happens, you get a DTC in the ECM about missing message or no communication with fan(s). But in some rare cases, the ECM can clearly see the fan, so no DTCs, but the fan doesn't see the ECM, so high speed fan operation... and that is what I suspect is happening with your car.... and the fan will need to be replaced.

While I'm not 100% sure, I think the technical reason this can happen is the inverse reactive current for use in unilateral phase detractors fails to automatically synchronizing cardinal grammeters. This can cause "side fumbling". Most likely the replacement fan will be an updated version with main winding of the normal lotus-o-delta type placed in panendermic semi-boloid slots of the stator. In more simple terms, let the tech know you want the "turbo encabulator" fan installed if possible.

what beats me right now is that you have a under warranty car yet you re here trying to fix it yourself.
I would take that car to the dealer and let them deal with it ( if this is a real issue )

Thanks Jef, I have one of those from the 1970's, far better than the recent release from Rockwell.
- So, can VCDS help me identify the combination of a failsafe to 100% situation? either through live measurements, or DTCs?
- example - FAN at 100%, All temps in range (ie no false temp sensor like the one I mentioned above if benign), no signal from ECM, etc.


JMR, The current approach of the garage suggests replacing larger part, after larger part - Fan + Controller + wiring harness (kit) < Therm ECU.
I really don't want half the engine bay ripped out trying to replace wiring when it's not needed, if thats their next step.

I have been trying to find the locations of the Thermal ECU in the car, I think it may be under the rear seat, and if the wiring traverses the main looms and bulk-head, thats a lot of ripping.

So, my own main aim is to assist to gather additional/live data thru VCDS to help truly diagnose the issue. It could be a day or two before the issue reproduces itself.
I am not going to fix anything. Very disappointing for a €95K car in Ireland.

I still dont agree with your battle plan. Even if you fix it yourself....sometimes if another issue comes up while car under warranty , they could discover your fix and void warranty all together. I say..as long as it is under warranty , i would not touch anything related to repair . You paid lots of money for that car..let them deal with it even if it means they will have to take half the car apart..it will be documented properly. But hey , that s just me ,you can proceed however you wish

Calm your tits and read all the correct advice you've already been given.

Did you back probe your fan module to see what PWM it's receiving?
Did you use a PWM signal generator to bypass the ECU and supply the module directly with a duty cycle?
Did you scope the signal wire?
Did you use a tone generator to validate the wire integrity between the module and ECU, and possibly locate your open circuit?

Maybe you should be posting your comment on FB or twitter.... around here, people are into diagnostics not magic. :rolleyes:

I would have liked to see photos of those "two broken wires" the video mentions; wires just don't "break" ??? Especially wrapped tight wires in the main engine harness. Perhaps rodent damage or overheated / short ?? A explanation or cause would have been helpful regarding that video. But, it is still a clue.

Hi Savagesoot,
I thought I had a sincere ask to see how VCDS can help provide insights in a forum for a product I purchased.
I didn't expect a series of comments from people based on an ask for help, which I was surprised by.
Maybe there's an email address I can ask the VCDS support team instead, I will look.

I am not inclined to get a scope, resistance testing etc to do further testing - that's for the garage. But, thank you for the questions/thoughts.

My sole ask was for help from this forum on what I should/could do with VCDS to help provide more insights.

While some were creative in answering, they did answer. VCDS can only tell you what the control module knows. The expectation as Jef reported is that you may see an error about a missing message from the fan controller. Apparently, your situation falls into the class where the ECM is not complaining about a missing message and yet the fan is running at 100%. The ECM and therefore VCDS, can offer no further help.

So, Jef, in his crazy humor, suggested you get the fan module replaced under warranty.

Humor can be both funny and also be offensive... obviously @Endeval you were offended. Apology from the forum.

VCDS & the community is providing you support and insights.... you're just being a snowflake about us having some fun with it.
So look at your MVBs and see what you are getting for the fan speeds.
Run output tests on fan/fans to see if they ramp up\down as commanded.
If VCDS is reporting the fan as being idle (~10%-15%) but it's clearly going full bore, then it just confirms what has already been suggested to you... the signal isn't getting to the control module and the "failsafe" is full speed.

You should find the ECM's fan speed request under Advance Measuring Values:
  • IDE00380 - Coolant fan 1: activation
  • IDE00381 - Coolant fan 2: activation
I would suspect they be the same, I've never seen any vehicle operate the fans at different speeds by design. If you find those values are the same and one fan works and the other doesn't... that pretty much ties back to my first reply.

Reference Scans and Maps of Non-Broken Cars has plenty of examples of IDE00380 and IDE00381 from known good cars.

Thank you Jeff, yes spot on, both fans with the same values.
I did happen to capture a number of values last night during the 100% Fan #1 issue and luckily enough, I had selected those two amongst others;

  • IDE00380 - Coolant fan 1: activation 10.16%
  • IDE00381 - Coolant fan 2: activation 10.16%
Note, fan 2 was not running at all.

Also EN101437, Fan request from air conditioner: 0.00%
