I know the 7P is pretty similar electronics to the D1, both are about the same age bosch ecu pairs. Does the Phaeton motronic use UDS?
Wait, you think a common-rail V8 TDI (UDS via CAN) is similar is similar the old W12 Phateon (KWP 2000 via K-Line)?

Oh wow, looks like they're very much not!

Apples to Oranges to Bananas? But I have a pair of CAN (not UDS) A8 ECUs on my test stand and they seem to be doing this :

Yup. Still a W12 gasser rather than a V8 TDI.

If somebdoy wants to send us a pair of ECUs like @mcnugget has, I'm confident we could figure this out, but unfortunately V8 TDIs were never sold in NAR.

If V8 TDIs had been sold here, I'd probably have owned one, at least for a while! :D

My guess is it hangs on 31 because 31 does not exist in these ECU just 11. My V8 does not have 31 on its CAN bus list and does not try to communicate with it. Has this 31 virtual module been manually added to the CAN bus list ?

I don't think it's anything special with my car, I haven't added 31 manually. If you search for 7P V8 vcds scans there are a bunch of others also showing 31. Out of interest, what happens if you add it to your gateway? Does it populate any of the controller fields when you try to open? I've seen variable behaviour on mine with either one, a few or no fields populating before it times out.

Travelling in Europe at the moment so cant check my Treg until back at the end of June. I will try to see what happens if i add 31 to the gateway list when I get back but as far as I am aware everything appears in 01 and 11

Guess what? Problem found!!! Woohoo!

You know how I the turbo vane actuators were passing the position test fine? We'll it turns out the RHS one was having an easy old time because it wasnt even physically connected to the turbo anymore! Not just one, but both the cirlips were gone and the rod in between had completely left the chat. It explains why the behaviour could change from time to time, it seems the vanes have been flopping to different positions when they felt like it. When I set them by hand to mid point I suddenly have balanced turbo RPM and MAF for a few minutes.

Now to track down a part that it seems neither VW or garrrett want to sell on its own...

Thanks to all who helped
