31-Engine other, VCDS stuck while opening controller

Hello,

I'm debugging a CKDA touareg with a air flow imbalance issue between the two banks. It has two ECUs so address 31-Engine other shows up. I need to watch some of the actuator channels of bank 1/2 at the same time with VCDS to get to the bottom of whats going on.

When I open the virtual 31 controller VCDS starts reading info and populates the VAG Number field correctly as 7P1907409A but then gets stuck with an eventual "no response from controller."

I'm pretty sure this mode used to work when I first got this car, any suggestions for things I could try here? I'm really struggling to troubleshoot while only looking at the data from one ECU at a time.

Hmm, unfortunately I don't think the ob2 mode is going to work for this problem. It seems to only allow a few basic channels to be observed.


Is opening the 31-Engine other controller expeced to work in VCDS?

Ok, is there any way I can help debug why it isn't opening the controller? Like debug logs, remote desktop or vcds cloud? I could leave the car on a charger with the ignition on at a time that suits.

I am assuming that:

AFS = Air Flow Sensor
B1 = Bank 1
B2 = Bank 2


You either have a massive intake / Boost leak or a faulty Air Mass (at first glance)

Does this have 1 or 2 Boost Pressure / MAP Sensors ?
  • Confirm that the Intake tract is sealed and leak free.
  • Swap the MAF's side to side - What you got ?
  • A seized Turbo (if it is Twin Turbo)


Does ECU 1 have MVB's for both MAF's ??

Thanks for the help Sheldon!

I have swapped the MAFs side to side, the low flow bank stays the same so it's not a dud MAF.

I've checked for leaks, can't find any and it seems unlikley since it will only pull this error intermittently. When it goes bad the car is low on power and surging, but the rest of the time it feels either 100% or close to. If it isn't ok its usually at lower RPM, once it winds out it feels fine.

The turbos have RPM sensing and are defnininley both running. The low flow bank usually hangs around 60-80% RPM of the other side which confirms the flow difference is real.

Only one boost pressure sensor to my knowledge. The EGR cooler is shared between banks so I guess that's why. Page 22 here: https://esperformance.net/ssp/vw/SSP_467_DE.pdf

The P166D code has popped up occasionaly ever since I got the car. I believe it's something to do with loss of comms between the two ECUs. You'll see it sometimes lurking in other scans on the net of VAG cars with a dual ECU, so I don't think it's unique to me.

DPFs seem fine, they start at atmospheric pressure and the increases during driving are balanced. I've seen it regen ok so not suspecting anything there.

I've been watching the turbo, intake runner, boost and EGR actuators while driving trying to spot any behaviour difference between the banks. So far it it *seems* to be the same but since I can only see most channels one bank at a time it is quite hard to compare.

Are you saying that one runs 60 - 80% slower than the other at all times or only at time of fault ??

Are these turbo's Variable Vane or the old style Wastegate Valve ?


I note your comments on Intake Leaks and Exhaust blockage - Unlikely as this is intermittent.


That does then leave the idea that there is a mechanical fault in the turbo, perhaps when one is hot something within is a little tighter than it should be ?

Would not be the first time a VAG / Any Turbo suffered stiff vanes or bearing failure ?

So this is where it gets complicated. The problem is not on or off, it seems to be present to a degree most of the time but then occasionally gets significantly worse and throws a bunch of codes.

During normal daily driving I'm usually seeing reduced turbo speed and MAF on bank 1. Its only around 20-40% less (as in 60-80% of what I see on bank 2). I dont know if this is in a 'normal' range. Sometime during highway driving I see the turbo RPM perfectly matched, however I almost never see the MAF values that close together under load, only during overrun. The SSP does suggest there is some kind of RPM control loop to balance turbo RPM between banks so it's possible that whats happening there.

When the car is having a bad day, the MAF will get very imbalanced, like 300 vs 1200 with bank 1 low. This is where it will throw, imbalance, MAF implausable, and sometimes (rarely) also boost regulation fault. It seems easier to trigger a real fault during hard driving with a trailer, however I have had it happen during city driving too. On these days the car is sluggish and surging at low RPM WOT.

So unfortunately not very certain fault behaviour.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the vane system as the actuator has never reported getting stuck (which I understand was really common on the older 7L touareg). I've watched the actuator actual position trace against commanded and it seems healthy. Unless the linkage is somehow failing and the actuator is happily doing its thing while the vanes wander, I cant see how this could be the issue.


Do you think a bearing failure could still be possible when both can hit the same RPM During highway driving? I'd assumed things would go bad much faster if a bearing was failing.


I've been leaning towards a sensor problem in EGR or an obscure actuator fault or some kind of bank1/2 compensation system that is fighting a problem and then sometimes giving up. It's a puzzle.

Yeh maybe, I've plotted the setpoint and actual for the runner flaps on both banks separately while driving and the behaviour looks very similar. It's not impossible that there is a mechanical failure inside and while the actuator is happy the flaps are loose and wandering, however it seems unlikely with the intermittent behaviour of the fault.

This is why I'm keen to get the 31 - Engine other mode working in VCDS. I'm sure if I could plot bank1 VS bank2 sensors and actuators side by side I could narrow down what is not behaving the same between sides, especially when the fault decides to get worse. Currently I think only MAF and turbo RPM are available for both banks at once from ECU 1.

It was the same on my 2007 V8 RS4 only 01 and 11 responded.

If you had two perfectly identical DPFs in an identical load/wear state, and flowed the same amount of exhaust through them, they should display identical pressure drops. You have two DPFs in unknown condition. If they're showing similar pressure drops even though one of them is flowing much less air, that side may be more restricted. That would explain the lower air mass flow on that side, and explain the lower turbo RPM.

I feel your pain on address 31. @Eric spent a LOT of time making it work properly on my W12 Phaeton. There's a way to get debug logs, but I don't recall the process. But you should be able to use data logging to collect and graph air-mass/pressure data against DPF pressure drop data for one bank at a time.

I think we have dual UDS ECUs somewhere that I should wire up, but that takes a backseat compared to SFD & TISAX certification. With the codeblock interfaces, there's really no way to debug that stuff remotely anymore.

That's a really good point, I hadn't thought about what that relationship should actually be during MAF imbalance! I'll log some data and get a better look at the how the dpf pressures respond when the turbo RPMs are far apart.

That's interesting you got address 31 working on the Phaeton. I know the 7P is pretty similar electronics to the D1, both are about the same age bosch ecu pairs. Does the Phaeton motronic use UDS? Maybe its more up to the gateway to do the work for 31 to chat back.

I think we have dual UDS ECUs somewhere that I should wire up, but that takes a backseat compared to SFD & TISAX certification.
If you do get a chance to have a look at what might be getting stuck I'd really appreciate it, but yeh I do understand these dual ECU piech cars aren't exactly growing in numbers and battling SFD is a much more worthy cause.

Ok this drive is interesting

At time t=273 when I floor it the problem occurs, AFMs diverge and bank 1 goes way down. Turbo RPMs confim it too, they're not in the plot but they are in the log. Car is weak and unhappy until t=417 when the ECU panics, logs an AFM A/B correlation DTC, throws CEL and then pins both bank1/2 AFM data to either the average of both or someting generated from MAP. SSP467 does suggest this will happen.


This behaviour is making me suspect something EGR related? The EGR cooler is I believe the only thing that allows flow bleed between banks and sits after the AFM?
