Previous owner could smell R134 inside the car and local Audi dealership found the rear evaporator was bad. I confirmed it was bad when I replaced it with new o-rings. Had the system professionally recharged, system now holds pressure but the AC compressor will not engage. Would love to save a trip to the dealer.

Have you cleared all the faults related to the HVAC systems? In 19 and 28?


How do you know the compressor isn't running?
The compressor should have been pumping during the regas, once the minimum pressure was reached. Did they say it didn't? But filled it anyway???
Is there a compressor shutoff code?

Do the pressures change with AC activation?
this is probably the best test, after checking the shutoff codes
If the pressures don't change, but the compressor control valve IS supplied voltage by the module, the control valve can be faulty.

Has the "breakaway" centre of the AC pulley "activated" (compressor seized and pulley allowed to rotate, but input shaft doesn't).
Was the compressor still driven by it's belt / the engine while the car was driven to be filled etc, with no refrigerant charge in?
They aren't supposed to be run with no charge as they are (usually) Variable Displacement Compressors (VDC)
They are always driven and vary the displacement (therefore; Output) by diverting pressure internally to adjust the swashplate angle

Tis' the season.... for non-functioning AC - '14 Touareg TDI

RAGE!!! As some of you may recall, I was whining late last year about lower than desired AC output, but due to the inexplicable CP events that I have seen during the last 5 years of owning the vehicle, I was distracted, and didn't for a second expect a problem, so no diagnostics took place...

If you are expecting the compressor to engage in the traditional manner of the mag clutch operating, it doesn’t work that way. The DENSO 7SEU17C compressor uses a modulated valve called the N280 and the compressor is always running.

The N280 is available from a couple of sources but we just fit a full new genuine DENSO unit.

Compressor shaft only spins if the pulley spins.

I hate to say it but I don't believe the dealer said anything about not driving the car when the system is purged to the previous owner. I believe he drove it home form the dealer AND I did test drive it before I picked it up.

I don't understand that table layout, but at least there appears to be pressure in there (which makes sense, with no fault code for low pressure). I'll assume "2 lbs" is the correct amount. I only ever see the label in grams, but I guess they may use non-metric stickers in countries still watching in black and white.

That pressure (7.2 bar) is about right for a 90F (32C) ambient temp without the AC running. The engine being hot can alter that somewhat too, obviously.

It looks like it's trying to send .595A to the control valve - that should have triggered a decent amount of cooling. I can't remember the range, but I only ever recall mine getting as high as 0.8 or 0.9 on the same compressor that Crasher references above, but totally different car. No cooling request is 0.0, but the compressor pumps a tiny amount, to circulate oil and to create the internal pressure required to increase output, when demanded.

Usually, if the wiring has a fault, you get an "open circuit" code, so I'd suggest looking at the valve pretty seriously. The AC guy should really have known this stuff, I'd have thought...? Not much point in continuing to fill a system that doesn't run... plus it can get tricky to even GET the whole charge in.

If you unplug the N280, you should get a fault code. If you want to check for voltage, you'll have to backprobe the plug while it's connected to the compressor, and it has silicone seals in the rear that you don't want to damage, ideally. You can also disassemble the plug, removing the seals and leaving just the terminal inside.

The voltage to the valve is pulse width modulated (PWM), so with a voltmeter, you'll get a voltage under 12, but with a scope, you'll get 12v square waves, with higher or lower frequency, depending on the specified Amps from the module.

Driving with no refrigerant doesn't gaurantee any kind of damage, but the "official" line is - do not run the engine. On my VR6, I could fit a short belt, but on my wifes FSI, I couldn't - the compressor was in the way of the shorter belt routing.

If the inner shaft is turning - it's not seized, anyway. The Denso was *EASILY* the most reliable version of that compressor: the Sanden and Zexels both had short lifespans, generally. But the "Compressor RPM" in the measuring values is NOT always measured, it's calculated from engine RPM, so don't use that as an indicator of the compressor actually working/turning.

If the valve is sticking, people have used a 9V battery, or even a 12V supply to try to free it up by driving it briefly one way, then the other... I'm not recommending it... just saying it :D If you get a replacement valve, the system has to be drained, valve swapped then refilled. Sometimes the valves are stuck, sometimes they are clogged.I think the clogging is more of an issue on the Zexel compressors, that loose the internal coating and create "black death" in the AC system.

Usually if the valve has jammed up, you do get some cooling at times ans it's intermittant and variable, but if they lost refrigerant then left the system unused for a while, if may have siezed up the valve properly - mine worked 100% fine, until I had the car off the road for a period during some mods, then it played up and my wifes identical car did it about the same time :facepalm:.

(Sorry for the wordiness...I must be bored :D)

I appreciate all that you have contributed. I couldn't figure out how to display the screen shot from VDCS so I typed out the values that show no shutdown codes.

So I learned more recently and found that the compressor is seized. I thought it was spinning but it wasn't...SIGH. More from the seller that I didn't even think about until you all educated me.

Seller heard a belt whine and then it went away = AC Compressor sheared the coupling to prevent additional accessory drive failure as you all know.

History is that Audi Dealer purged his system, he declined the work BUT they never told him not to drive it. It was only a matter of time until that Denso gave up the ghost!

New Denso on order with seals.

I'm going to pull the service history and see what said dealer wrote on the work order. They should have told him not to drive it.

The system will be full of debris and will need professionally flushing with a new combined receiver drier/condenser 4L0 260 401 A, if you don’t do this the new compressor will fail and Denso will not warranty it. It is worthwhile studying Denso’s oil balancing video

That's a shame. But at least you found an issue, rather than spending hours chasing around in hope!


I don't know how the pricing works out in the US, but I got all my AC parts (and others!) from Spareto.com, based in Latvia, or Estonia.

Shipped to NZ, the Compressor, Condensor (with drier), Expansion valve and all the O-rings; was about 40% of the price of a compressor from the dealer, and about the same as a mate in the AC trade could get a compressor alone!
