How would I confirm if it corresponds to the PODS?
If you want to use VCDS to build a new module 15 coding, does VDS offer you certain options? And if so, is there something like "seat occupancy monitor" among these options?

Here is the first auto scan from February. J706 was already a problem albeit I see it said intermittent and now it doesn't say intermittent. At the time, I assumed that J706 error was due to the J234 being defective.
Is this before replacing the module 15 unit?

Yes, this is before doing anything to it.

It's possible I missed a step. I remember replacing a J234 last year and I had to program it to the car. I will look into it.

These Airbag modules do not work that way. They use "Index Coding", were there is exactly one coding that matches their Index, which is determined by a factory-installed dataset. They will only accept the coding that's correct for the index/dataset.

I installed the exact match and it's not giving an error code, only the J706 is causing problems and it was a problem before I touched it.

Uwe's post explained the functionality of the US version well enough for me. You won't find it in European cars. So I apologize for my insufficient knowledge.

scan you took before the first repair:

The scan you took during the second repair (but it lacks coding). The question is whether it means anything.

Unfortunately, the diagram for your convertible that I have does not use pin number 33 on the J234 unit. But pin 47 is used. I am sure that there must be a voltage on this pin that is equal to the battery voltage. If in your case there is a difference in the battery voltage and T10r\8, then for the purpose of investigation I would bring the battery voltage to pin T10r\8 and see if VCDS no longer records an error. If you do not notice a change, then the defect is probably in the J706 unit itself (even if it is changed from another used donor part). I assume that T10r\1,2 and 9 are properly grounded. If you would like to send the wiring diagram that I have for your car, send an Email. I have them in PDF format. But I am sure that your diagram from Erwin corresponds to the reality on your real car.

In the ETKA spare parts catalog, there is no seat component (J706, G452) as a spare part available for delivery. The question is why. Maybe someone from a North American workshop could help here. Isn't there some "magic" in the J706 unit that, after detecting the disconnection of G452 and/or G453 from J706, writes a fault to the airbag module?

Because the workshop manual states the following for these components:

I have a feeling that there is no space for basic settings in module 15. The shortcut is not the reason.
This information is not true. In the case of PODS for the USA, many things are really different. Therefore, here is information on the assembly of PODS parts:

No worries, I will retest the wiring and the voltage on the lead T10r/8 as you suggested. I have another one I am picking up today, a 2006 convertible beetle, so I may not have time until tomorrow to retest. My wife also owns a convertible beetle 2008 but she won't like me using it for comparative testing.

Good afternoon. I retested T10r and I also tested the 2006 Convertible beetle I just purchased last Tuesday. The 2005 Beige is the trouble maker. I already cleared all the codes of the 2006 which included a crash sensor, replaced, and a bad seat belt. Since I now have a good working passenger seat with a J706 that is communicating properly, I thought it would be a good idea to pull the seat from the 2006 and try it in the 2005. Surprise, I get the same error code complaining about no signal with J706.

I have no choice but to assume at this point that the problem is in the T10r connector on the car side, the wiring from the T10r to the airbag module or the airbag module itself even though it's not giving me a code. Note that I did replace the airbag module with a used exact match indexed unit. At this rate, I will complete my 2006 project before the 2005 which I have been working on for several months now. I'm not new to this, the 2005 is my 13th project and the 2006 is my 14th and I have replaced airbag modules, J706 modules in the past but never had this problem.

Thanks!

I have a few ideas: 1\ Do you have a scan of the 2006 Beetle before removing the seat? 2\ If you put the 2006 seat back into the same Beetle, will the scan errors be the same as before the removal? 3\ Did you pay attention to post #51?

The PODS system is something foreign to me as a European, but I think that parts with different functionality can be used within cars produced (by the factory) in the same years. And this situation can be a natural consequence.

I have the initial scans for both beetles. The 2006 had a crash sensor problem which set off the airbag light but I fixed it by replacing the crash sensor behind the front bumper. This car came to me as gray interior and I changed it to black, including the seats. I transferred the POD module J706 to the replacement black seat. I tried using the this known good seat on the 2005, which is the one giving me the J706 no signal problem but it gave me the same error so I put the seat back into the 2006 to continue competing this project.

I just reread post #52 and I understand what it says but it doesn't explain why the 2005 won't accept the seat from the 2006. I did notice that the 2006 allows me to enter into basic settings but the 2005 won't. I also noticed that entering into security module in the 2005 is hit and miss and when it does allow me, it still won't let me enter into basic settings.

I have been swapping out seats for almost two years to change the interior color or because the seats are worn out and this is the first time I have this problem.

Thanks for all your help.

I have the initial scans for both beetles.
Please post these scans. Perhaps from these scans it will be possible to identify the reason why it is not possible to do the basic settings on the 2005.

But if the 2006 unit can do the basic settings, then with what result? And please answer what is the status when you return the 2006 seat to the 2006. Can we say that after returning this unit back to the donor, it is accepted without problems and without storing an error? Or can the recording of the faults be deleted?

Kind regards

I couldn't help but notice that the ETKA spare parts catalog is "silent" about the J706 unit. But it's a test of attention. I'm posting the result below. This component is not shown, but ETKA distinguishes between a sports and non-sports cover that forms ONE UNIT with the J706 unit. I have a question for the general public who have encountered the USA New Beetle convertible. Is it really possible to separate this unit from the cover and ABG unit without causing any irreversible changes?

And if anyone has any knowledge that J706 can be freely replaced with the airbag unit, it is clear from the catalog that since July 1, 2008 the part has been replaced with the index F. The question is what is behind this? Maybe the functionality of J706 vs. unit no. 15? In any case, the OP is probably working with OEM index E and F units (cars made in 2005 and 2006).

Hopefully this will help the OP :-)

Hi there. Here are the original scans from both vehicles. When I transferred the seat from the 2006 to the 2005, I get the same error J706 no signal. When i return the donor seat back to the 2006, I have to clear the code, cycle the ignition and it accepts the seat no problem. Like I said before, I have swapped seats over the last two years to replace worn out seats that I have never had this problem until now. I have checked the wiring for continuity between the Airbag modul and the J706.

These Airbag modules do not work that way. They use "Index Coding", were there is exactly one coding that matches their Index, which is determined by a factory-installed dataset. They will only accept the coding that's correct for the index/dataset.
Please Uwe, or anyone else, is this information about the module index\dataset? (I think 0811)

That ^^^ there is quite possibly erroneous voltage measurements that may confuse you and anyone reading.

First and foremost you have no Ground !!! Nothing can work without a ground - No !! it cannot !!

Then I guess you are measuring a Signal Wire with a Voltmeter and getting confusing / wrong results.

Where should the Ground be and why do you not have it ??
