I have and 2016 Audi A6 3.0T with a supposed failed J851 Image Processing Control Module, according to dealer. Symptom: ACC and Braking Guard Not Available. My question is which tool will Code/Program a new replacement J851 module to work in the car. What is the proper terminology for this operation? "Coding" or "Programming"? And finally, Is it possible to install and program a used module in this situation?
Thanks for any info.

Coding and Programming are not the same thing.

Coding needs a diagnostic tool such as VCDS, but Programming needs some kind of firmware tweaking/hacking tool.

What do you need? It sounds like coding, and possibly something to load a new dataset - but without an Auto-Scan I really am guessing on that point.

--------
Coding = changing installed engineered options in control modules
Flashing = installing a complete new program in a control module.
Programming = tweaking/hacking an installed program to modify it.

VCDS only supports Coding of modules as it is the only function above that is accomplished using standard diagnostic protocols. The others require special tools and access to servers to which VCDS has not been granted access.

You might be able to use a "used" ECU if you can find someone who can flash the proper program for your car. If the module is part of the immoblizer, that user must also match the Immo stuff.

More than likely, your best path forward is to buy a module programmed by a dealer, matched to your VIN and its original install. Then you can code that module, perform any basic settings needed, and adapt it using the adaptations if necessary using VCDS.

The image module would not contain any Immo functions... It is likely locked with Component Protection which would have to be cleared. As @PetrolDave asked, an autoscan would help us to advise more clearly.

I would recommend you purchase a VCDS Hex-V2, and run the Auto-Scan function. For all we know you may have some other
problem that VCDS would be able to manage for you. And, there are many other functions that a DIY'er can utilize with VCDS. (even if it turns
out that you indeed need a module.)

I just put your order on Pending/Hold.

Instead of just ordering a HEX-V2 like you did, you can do a trade-in upgrade here:

With the 10-VIN HEX-V2 you want, that's effectively a $150 trade-in credit for your Micro-CAN.

OK, we'll cancel your previous order number 20292024. Your card will not be charged for that.

I see your new order number 20292026 for a HEX-NET as an upgrade.
