Hello everyone, hope your having a great week. I have a intermittent puzzle I can't crack!
A short little backstory. I replaced my turbo/DPF because of a broken turbo shaft and oil coming out the exhaust. It all went well but it wasn't 2 weeks later a light came on and put the car into limp mode. The fault codes that came back were
• P1440 EGR Valve (N18) Open Circuit
• P0403 EGR Valve (N18) Malfunction intermittent
I need to get a couple things understood. It's possible I had this issue before the turbo went out but I was just assuming it was something I messed up when replacing Turbo/DPF.
The thing I can't find any FOR SURE evidence on is what EGR valve is the N18 Valve! There is 2 EGR systems and I believe the N18 is the on bolted on the intake and NOT the one on the EGR cooler.
1. Am I correct on this?

Thus far I have checked all wiring from the EGR valve in the intake 5 pin connector to the ECM. All circuits had great continuity and passed a load test. I replaced the EGR valve on the intake because when I ran a actuator test in VCDS it sounded horrible and when using a borescope it appeared that the valve was jittery and not opening or closing smoothly. The new valve did the same thing. After clearing codes and driving the car for a couple weeks I thought the issue was fixed but all symptoms came back.

After fiddling with it some more and clearing codes a third time. I got the same codes plus P2463. DPF Excessive soot accumulation. I monitored soot load and actual was 0.0 and calculated was 49.0.
If anyone has some trouble shooting advice or any kind of help I would appreciate it. I'm trying my best to figure this one out. Thank you much!!
I will upload the fault code freeze frame and data.

Ok, I will do that tonight. There will be other fault codes now because I had the key on with things unplugged. Will that be fine?

Also just for my understanding what can we see from a full scan that we cant in the data I posted previously?

What do you mean by Code wrap?

Thanks for your help! Just trying to learn as I go.

How the vehicle is configured (VAG change things in mid model year) and whether there are sympathy faults that give a clue.

Ok will do tonight
Yes

Yes

This is your issue... your DPF is full beyond capacity based on this, and the controller will block any regen attempts.
Thank you, Does the controller just think its full or is it actually full based on differential pressures?
How does the fault get cleared even after the fix?

Ok that makes sense, thanks.

It's a calculated value... based on various models... pressures, distance & time since last successful regen, measured air flow, etc.

If the DPF is replaced, the engine controller is reset in order to be told that it has a new DPF.

Ok that makes perfect sense, thank you. I thought I reset the carbon mass with VCDS mut I must not have. Once I upload the full scan I will look into the carbon mass and reset it again.

Do you think its possible that the EGR codes are sympathy faults from the DPF issue?

NO... they are actual fault as per above.
One points to electrical side, the other to mechanical operation....

Doesn't that sound like you've confirmed what the faults are suggesting?

Gotcha ok.

What are the faults suggesting and how do I confirm them?

Electrical side: I check wiring to and from ECM and the 5V reference and didn't find the slightest issue so that's when I changed the EGR valve. Process of elimination is what I was attempting.

Mechanical side: I checked the operation of the original valve and it didn't seem like it was operating smoothly.(I will remove the new valve again and inspect the new valve closer up to see if it seems better.)

I used a Dansk (PN: 03L131501K) off of FCP Euro's website. Do you think I got another faulty valve? Should I get an OEM one?
It is throwing the same faults as the original EGR valve.

I'm not sure you're reading what I'm saying.
You've CONFIRMED that what the faults are telling you is TRUE.
You've changed the component, so if that was the issue, the faults wouldn't be there.

The new valve did the same thing.
But... since they are still there, and the new component behaves just like the old one did, this would indicate that the issue is indeed an electrical\connection\signal issue no?
Isn't that valve PWM? Did you confirm it's responding to commands? Did you confirm duty cycle with a meter, or use a PWM generator to actuate the valve? Did you back probe connectors to ensure you have good contacts, etc.? I wasn't there, so you'll have to provide more detail on what you did.

My comprehension is as much as a pebble lol. I'm trying to understand and I got it now.

Yes I believe your correct but that is also assuming the way the valve is acting is NOT normal. (I don't really know what's normal) Ill find another car and try see what IS normal.

Yes it is a PWM valve. I have a very limited understanding of PWM diagnostic and how "duty cycle" help diagnose an issue. I don't have a oscilloscope but can check duty cycle and stuff with my multi meter.

I will do some research and figure out how to properly diagnose a PWM circuit and component and respond with my findings.

Thanks for your patience and time.

I finally finished my tests. I found both the old and new EGR valve are out of spec.
EGR Valve spec 18.5Ω (+/- 1.3Ω)
Old Valve 15.7Ω
New Valve 152kΩ and was jumping around when shaking/banging on the valve. (115kΩ-198kΩ)
I ordered a OEM valve so we will cross our fingers and hope for the best.

Give this a shot
Code:
EGR VACUUM REGULATOR SOLENOID VALVE WITH POTENTIOMETER, CHECKING
Observe all safety precautions: SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
View clean working conditions: CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS
Perform a preliminary check to verify the condition: PRELIMINARY CHECK.
Use only gold-plated terminals when servicing any component with gold-plated electrical harness connector terminals.
See Appropriate Wiring Diagram Information for component locations and connector views.

NOTE:
The EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve and High Pressure EGR Valve both refer to the same component N18 or V338. Name changes occur in Appropriate Wiring Diagrams, parts listings etc. The EGR potentiometer G212 is part of the N18 or V338 valve assembly and is serviced as one component.

I also performed every test in the troubleshooting steps SaVAGeSoot attached above and here were my findings. Everything was in spec.

EGR Valve pin 1 & 5 on both old & new valves. Results: 166Ω

Checking voltage. (Spec: Batt+)
Pin 2 & ⏚ Results: 12.4V
6 & ⏚ Results: 12.4V
3 & Batt + Results: 12.4V

(Spec: 5.01V)
Pin 1 & ⏚ Results: 5.01V
(Load tested every circuit as well)
Checking wiring harness from EGR to ECM.
Pins Results
1 & 25 .3Ω
2 & 4 .2Ω
3 & 53 .3Ω
5 & 57 .3Ω
6 & 19 .2Ω
(Load tested every circuit again)

Checked for high Ω, short circuit to each other, Batt+, or ⏚.

Only fault found was the new valve that was installed was out of spec. The old valve was as well but not near as much.

Any other tips on what to check? I checked duty cycle with the key on but I can't find much online about how to check it and what pins I should really be checking. I'm beginning to understand how it works and why they use it though.
I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to PWM circuits so ANY help with that would be appreciated!

OK.... so the latest scan appears to no longer complain about the EGR....
What is it that you're still trying to do with PWM checking?

Like I said the fault code is intermittent and clears out just fine. Until about 2 weeks of driving it will come back on and it has done this 2 times now so I know its not just a fluke. Because of it being intermittent I just wanted to see if anyone had any other things I should check before throwing a new valve on it.

I don't even have a full scan with the EGR faults on there because I cleared them out before I saved the scan. (I know now. Always save your scan!!!) and I cant get the problem to reoccur with out waiting for 2 weeks.

I got the new OEM EGR valve and I tested resistance on pin 2 & 6 and the resistance was better it was still out of that 18.5Ω (+/- 1.3Ω) spec from those trouble shooting steps. It was 16.7Ω.

I also checked the DPF and it is all good. Soot load and differential pressures are fine. I must have forgotten to reset the soot load and oil ash when replacing DPF and turbo.
