I recently had my timing chain replaced on a 2012 Audi A4 with 310,000KM at a local Audi/BMW specialist auto shop and have had the dreaded P0016 Code ever since. The symptoms are CEL, Extended crank 4-7 seconds till it starts, and inconsistent rough idling with it clearing up around 1500rpm+. When the shop replaced the timing chain the Mechanic said he measured exhaust cam at -6.5. After the job was done I picked up the car and drove 35km without any issues. The next morning it threw the P0016 code and would crank but didn't start. I logged and cleared the code for the car to startup no problem, it also drove 35km without an issue but when I went to start the car again it had the P0016 and extended crank issue. I did bring the car back to the same mechanic so he could take it apart again and verify the timing chain was within spec, and it was. We have replaced the Spark Plugs, Ignition coils, Timing Chain, PCV Valve, Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor, Cam and Crank Sensor, VVT Solenoid and Magnet adjuster. Still the same P0016 extended crank and rough idle. The car will start normally after the check engine light is cleared even though the code is still visible on a Auto Scan with the car running (NO Check engine light on the dash).
Looking at the camshaft adaption values in VCDS my mechanic and I are completely stumped, its showing -20.63 with little to no fluctuation. I attempted a Reset of All Adaption Values with no success, I have attempted to enter Security Access Codes with the error Not Available In Active Session. I suspect the ECU is locked out or in safemode.

My theory is the ECU is in SafeMode holding this bad data in it's memory not allowing for it to be fully cleared out. Meaning I need to bring it to Audi so they can use a dealer level scan tool for adaption resets.
The mechanics theory is a bad wire or ground connection. We have inspected the connectors and some of the wiring but no smoking gun yet.

I wanted to post to this form before going to Audi to see if anyone had an idea of what's going on and ways to fix it. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Out of time. How was timing verified? Please describe the process exactly as it was performed. Good help is very hard to find. Also I would question if everything was done to spec.

I did bring the car back to the same shop right after the P0016 code happened and talked with the mechanic, we both wanted to verify his work. He put the bumper in the service position and took the timing covers off. I was not there to watch the whole job as it was 8 hours but he did facetime to show me the distance between the camgear markers was 124mm, also that the chain didn't slip. He reassembled and replaced the tensioner, crank pully bolt and the upper timing cover.

We used this timing chain kit

NEW UPDATE
I was recommended to try a battery reset to reset the ECU. Removed the negative terminal, pressed the brake to drain all remaining power and waited 20 minutes before attaching the negative terminal back onto the battery. Went into VCDS, looked at camshaft adaption values, started the car and boom -19.58 degrees with less than .5 degree of fluctuation while under load. I did drive the car for 10km and didn't see the value go over -19.68. The car drives the same as before. I will attach a few videos of startup and idle.

That test that he performed where it's 124mm from cam to cam don't mean jack shit. It's a cam crank correlation code. Meaning cam timing in correlation to crank position is off or the adjustment is not possible. Please ask if everything was torqued to spec. Also ask them to provide those specs. I have a strange suspicion something is over torqued or the engine is out of time as stated previously.

I'm really sorry but whoever told you that resetting the ecm by disconnecting the battery was going to solve this issue should get their head examined. If this is a recommendation from someone at that shop well then we already know you threw your money down the drain.

Not trying to be a dick but thats the cold hard truth.

The shop believes it's something electrical because when you clear the code and start the car it operates perfectly normally, no extended crank and no shaking idle. Only on the next startup poor preformance is noted. Your right, time to find a new mechanic or deal with Audi directly. I'm already way over what I wanted to spend on this.

The shop can believe whatever they want. It does not mean they are correct and correlation faults are usually not related to other sensors unless you don't have a signal from a cam position sensor or crank. However if that were the case you would have hard faults for those sensors either implausible signal short or open to ground or vcc . I ask for specifics because I have seen many so called "special" "ists" fuck something very simple like timing on a 2.0T engine up. This is my suspicion I may be wrong as I am not perfect either but based on what I've seen are these factors and common fuck ups by independent shops as well as dealer technicians. The spool valve on the front of the intake cam is over torqued. This valve needs to be torqued to exactly 35nm. If it's too tight the valve itself will not be able to advance the timing as needed to may be in a state that is advanced and retarded if it's over torqued. I have also seen the actuator that has a metal plunger that actuates this valve either get jammed or hung up due to debris floating in the oil as it sits in front of this spool valve and gets bolted to the cam bridge. The next thing that I have seen is the wrong oil or low oil level causing lower hydraulic pressure to be available at the cam therefore resulting in a similar situation cannot be advanced or retarded because there is a lack of hydraulic pressure due to either wrong oil and low oil level. Next is the lower crank timing gear. This gear literally floats on the end of the crank shaft. It only fits one way and is only secured when the vibration dampner and its bolt is torqued and fastened to 150nm plus 90degrees, essentially locking it all together. This is a common occurrence, because this gear can slip and move ever so slightly and be just a few degrees off and is often overlooked during disassembly, in most cases in order to keep this gear from moving you want to secure it with a bolt and shim within 5minutes of removing the original otherwise it may move. Many just run this bolt home during assembly and check their marks. Just because the vibration dampner timing mark matches up with the lower engine cover timing mark does not mean the gear inside the engine is in time. This results in a false positive that the engine is in time when in reality the bottom crank gear is out of time with the top/ camshafts. This is simple easy shit. Then again I have done these timing chains and engine overhauls in the thousands at this point so to me I can probably do them blind If I needed to. These are the most common mistakes that shops make this is why good help is hard to find. Many corners cut and subpar quality of work or lack of adherence to factory repair manual and policies and procedures.

I am curious on what it costs you in CDN or USD if you would like to share or not share I totally understand.

Looking back at the service records the shop noted the VVT solenoid was clogged with debris. I start with inspecting that. I wonder if that debris got in the Cam bridge oil passages.

I paid $4500 CAD for my car a year ago in running condition but needing a timing chain. The car is a 2012 Audi A4 Avant just under 300,000km. The previous owner had installed a Big Brake kit, CTS Cat and exhaust, upgrated info screens, and every aftermarket carbon accessory you can think of. I thought I scored pretty good on the deal.

I added a stage 1 IE tune $700
First timing chain service with labour $2750
Second look at timing chain $1280
Miscellaneous service items $800
About $11,000 CAD/$7650 USD total into the car.
Clean stock example sells for around 6-10k in Canada.
I still have some slop in my front passenger suspension and need two rear DWS06+ for 20" rims. Another $1100CAD.
I'm not upset for what I paid. Just frustrated for throwing money at a problem that isn't solved.

Included is the last bill from the shop. They noted P0506 and P0010 codes, both I haven't got before but related to the timing issue. The previous owner did attempt to fix the timing issue (however didn't replace timing chains) installed shitty manufactured parts related to VVT solenoid and magnet adjuster.
After this service they said the car ran perfectly. I got in and restarted the car to have the CEL and P0016 code return. I didn't want to continue throwing money at the car/shop so I got a VCDS and took it on myself to look into the issue.

@SensorKing thank you for that insight. I would say based on what you've mentioned. This shop is indeed a bunch of "special" "ists". No professional technician would use verbiage like "crap" on a copy of a repair order to the customer. The fact that this is how it was written tells me all I need to know. The story as a whole provides very little details or explanation of what was actually checked to verify timing is on the money. I hope they didn't charge you for the follow up visit after the timing chains were done. If they did well then I am very sorry. I still think this is related to the timing chain job work they did. The fact that they tried throwing a camshaft position sensor at it just proves the point that they are grasping at straws because they are lost and don't know what else to do. Very sad indeed.

In short in comes down to how diligent the tech is and in this case you got "mechanics" because that what these guys are , they are not specialists by any measure or technicians they are regular run of the mill mechanics are just parts changers and parts cannon operators in this case. Based on the stories written they are not technically inclined in terms of diagnostic procedures and basic engine performance logic.

If you want to do a quick and simple TDC check all you would need to do is remove the upper timing cover and cyl#1 spark plug and a long screw driver. Then insert the screw driver into the cyl#1 opening and rotate the engine clockwise until the camshaft marks are in the vertical position and the screw driver is not rising any higher in cyl#1. Then you can look at the mark on the vibration dampner and see if it lines up with the mark on the lower engine cover. This is a 30minute job even for a enthusiast. This is something that shop could of done but again at this point I wouldn't trust them to diagnose their way out of a brown paper bag let alone fix a vehicle.

PS the price on the timing chain is decent if its in CAD I charge 2grand$ USD for such a job but all of my vehicles are test driven prior to pick up with at least 5 to 10 key cycles to ensure the job was done right and to standards. Clearly in your case the vehicle was not driven after completion or they decided to just take the money and kick it down the road.

@EuroX Thank you. I did the quick and simple cam timing check you recommend and you're 100% correct. The shop is incompetent and didn't put the engine in time. I checked 5 times to make 100% sure I was doing it correct and every single time the first cylinder would be at TDC and the timing marks on the harmonic balancer don't line up. 1 inch or more off center
TDC
[ ]
Past TDC, into intake stroke

The shop did charge me both times for diagnosis. Saying both times the work was correct. I'm going to call the owner of the shop once my cars fixed but unfortunately I don't see any refund coming back to me. They're the only "Euro Specialist" in my local area so a negative review would hurt the business a lot more compared to the profit they made from me. Still a shitty feeling though.

At this point I think I will buy the tools to put the engine in time myself.

Very sad indeed. Good help is very hard to find. Don't get me wrong there are talented tech's out there that run good shops but frankly based on what I see and the calls I get everyday sometimes from all over the country I can probably count on 1 or 2 hands at most the numbers of euro shops that have a clue and are competent in their field. This totally boggles my mind how a shop can fuck something as simple as this up.

I would present what you've found and ask them how they would like to rebuild your trust in them again with your vehicle. It is clear the work was not done right.

If you need the procedure please reach out i'll be more than happy to provide you with the factory steps to get this sorted out.
